I know having Halsey in the video the way they did seems odd to you, BUT they actually pulled off a very careful balancing act with this feature, and it has to do with two things: being an idol group, and being an international act. The audio (studio/radio) version of the track has Halsey singing every chorus, including lines in Korean (with some harmony from the boys)-so why not the MV version? 1) Doing features in idol pop can be difficult since fans tend to be really REALLY weird about it. Most idol fans like the group members themselves to get *all the attention all the time,* and the music videos are some of the most important instances of that. In the video, the group got the entire first half of the vid (and song) to themselves, which has kept fans satisfied that the boys had enough screen time and were able to show-just like you said, actually-that they *could* handle things on their own, and that they weren't "propped up" or overwhelmed by the feature. 2) On the more logic-driven side of things, BTS cannot perform live with Halsey 99% of the time. Their SNL perf didn't have her, and none of their many, many Korean TV perfs will have her; it's likely that only the BBMAs will include her. Instead of making a version that completely excludes her and one that completely includes her (like they did with the Nicki Minaj feature), the video version only partially-excludes her audio in a way that prepares audiences (and BTS themselves) for a Halsey-less live performance. In the mv, halsey isnt included much because this is the version bts are going to be using during performances BTS themsleves have said they never contact other artists for a collab unless they believe that artist is needed for a certain track they work on. it may not seem like it, but halsey contributed a lot into this song. She: 1. sings the WHOLE chorus in the studio version 2. wrote her parts in the song 3. sang in korean instead of just adjusting to english 4. chose to learn the choreo for this song despite not being a good dancer 5. also has hidden vocals (IN KOREAN) meaning she doesnt only sing the chorus she was perfect for this collab because she didnt have a verse of her own making halsey ease her way into the song. Her voice compliments the song and blends in well with the boys voices making it more natural. I honestly cant think of a better person doing this collab with the boys. Especially since bts and halsey have been friends for 2 years now (:

okay for some of the people in the comments (because it’s kind of annoying me at this point lol): THERE ARE 2 VERSIONS of the song. The mv version is more focused on the boys. In the album version, Halsey’s part isn’t “more noticeable” or “can be heard better”, she has different parts in the album version! Hope this helps anyone who’s confused. Also, Namjoon (rm) said when they first heard the song, they HAD to get Halsey to feature on it because they really love her voice (and they’re good friends). Imma have to agree tho, she was unneeded in the MV but in the album version, she fits beautifully in the song and I can’t wait for them to perform at the bbmas together.

Actually halsey was important for the video* I'm gonna explain very quickly the role of halsey in the music video: Halsey in the album version sings more and sings even in Korean, in the music video she represents ARMY. Honestly is hard to explain it. Basically she's at work and BTS is waiting her to end her turn. Bts are standing outside the theatre and not inside like a kpop idol normally do. They're outside because in that moment they're normal people who want to know about army and ask them what they did today, to text them and etc. At the beginning they're facing the word persona....oh lord Is hard to explain and I don't even speak English. You probably already know by now (from the comments) but on the album version there's is more Halsey. She sings a lot of the chorus and does a bunch of alibis. The reason why Halsey isn't as present in the MV version is because when BTS goes on award shows...they can do it without Halsey. Also a reason why Halsey is there (other than for promotion) is that Halsey is supposed to represent Army.

There is this KZbin channel called DKDKTV which often analyses BTS's content.. they uploaded a video explaining how Boy With Luv is basically about BTS's gratitude towards Armys and that Halsey might be there to represent the Armys! (Basically the song is about how we gave them Wings to fly and now after "flying so high" they want to go down and let us join them on the stage cause we are the stars of the show_a reference to Singing In The Rain which is the main inspiration of the music video) Seems a little chaotic but if you watch the DKDKTV video you will get it.
