i think one of the biggest reasons why girl group choreo may appear similar to each other is the fact that when performing live they are almost always in very restrictive clothing- short skirts/dresses, heels, etc- which is why they usually do more with their hands. the public also tends to be more critical of girl groups, and they are expected to look and act a certain way, which gives them less space to do all the concepts boy groups are allowed to do with little no consequence. it typically isn’t until girl groups are older and have a smaller male/larger female fanbase that they are given more freedom to branch out from the typical “cutesy” concepts.

yeah agree 100% but also if you want to see a girlgroup with powerful and not so cutesy moves you should check out Gfriend, they are dubbed the best dancers in girlgroups

While this comment is very true in most respects, Twice didn't start wearing heels until maybe What Is Love and even then 7/9 of them still don't wear heels on stage lol (their go to shoe wear has been black combat boots for the most part). And even then Twice's concept isn't "typical cutesy" it's sporty and fun and they're meant to reach all demographics. Thus their choreo is supposed to be something a 10 year old all the way up to a 60 year old could enjoy and dance along to. That being said all girl groups have different concepts. For instance, Red Velvet's choreo varies from do-able for the average person to hard for the average person to even try to follow. It all depends on what they're releasing. And even they're "cuter concepts" can have some difficult choreo (i.e. the monster that is the Rookie choreo). That's because Red Velvet's concept is that they have no concepts lol. And even look at Gfriend, their music is dreamy yet strong and complex and so is their choreo. In short, none of the girl groups mentioned have the same choreo or concepts at all. It's a shame that most people see a group of girls and immediately dumb down their concepts and group them all together (when in reality most guy group concepts are literally the least creative but "omg hard dance moves" right?)

aiken relkins i completely agree!! though twice has been wearing short clothing since debut so even without heels, they still don’t get to wear completely unrestrictive stuff onstage. but i agree that people tend to just look at girl groups, clump them altogether as “cutesy” and then disregard them completely, completely discrediting how hard these girls have to work. i prefer girl groups as a whole over bgs so i’m on your side with bgs not even being that creative, they just get gassed up for having more intensive choreo.

Girl group dances are really not the same lol. Twice have their own very distinct easy style because jyp wanted to make them more approachable and dances catchy. You guys should react to some gfriend and blackpink and red velvet they are all very different

While I agree with you, i kinda agree with them. Groups that have similar concepts tend to have similar moves even if they’re all distinct. Take cute concepts for example, there is a formula in choreographies that is used...a blueprint that is the foundation they build upon. When I was watching sister slam dunk season 2, the choreographer who has choreographed for a lot of girl groups was talking about how there’s always a point dance. The cute groups always use a lot of hand movements in their choreo. It’s cute so the dance has to look cute and easy (even if it’s not). I think being Kpop fans, we can tell and see the distinct styles of each group however if you’re new to Kpop, they’re gonna look very similar or the same.

listening to a song, watching the MV and then at some point seeing the dance practice, it does give a whole new vibe to the song. someone in the video also said it, you kinda see the transitions, and in my opinion, these kpop dances more often so match with the lyrics (giving you understanding korean 🤣) which i kinda appreciate

i get what zak was saying, and from what i understand girl group dances are probably the most popular as far as everyday people learning them. there's so many videos of toddlers doing twice dances and i think that's the point. they're not supposed to impress you by how hard they are to do, they're supposed to encourage you to learn them by being fun and easy~♡ i suggest watching loona's hi high dance practice or miss a's i don't need a man dance practice, they're so cool~♡

Yea watching the dance practices definitely makes you appreciate the work of kpop groups more, away from the glitz of their MVs, just in sweats and sneakers. Also, Monroe was right about the choreos having similar moves across girl groups(cutesy fists) and boy groups (hip thrusts) etc, is to make the dances easier to learn and develop a kpop style. Kpop companies you'll be surprised to learn actually invest a lot of money in getting famous choreographers from all over the world to come teach their trainees and choreograph for them. If you know Keone & Mari (if you don't please learn), they are super famous dancing couple who have choreographed for BTS and a couple other groups, in addition to doing all their other dance projects. I think they choreographed Touch by NCT 127 as well.
