Riverview Carousel at Six Flags over Georgia

This is the Riverview Carousel at Six Flags over Georgia. This carousel is one of one four carousels that were built that have five rows of which there are only two operating now. This one is also the only one of the two that are operating in its original configuration. This one is also on the National Register of Historic Places as is the building it resides in. The carousel was built in 1908 by PTC (Philadelphia Toboggan Co) and is model #17 and installed at Riverview Park in Chicago, Illinois, USA where it operated from 1908 to the park closing in 1969. It was bought by Six Flags and installed in their Georgia park in 1971 where it operates to this day. There are fourteen standing horses, fifty-six jumping horses, and four chariots. The carousel was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1995 and was rumored to have given rides to such notable people like Al Capone, and President Woodrow Wilson when it was at Riverview Park. I rode this as a kid when it was at Riverview Park in Chicago and just this last week (in July 2019) I rode the only other one like it at the Cleveland History Center. A big thank you is due all the people who have maintained and restored these treasures for over 100 years now.

I think they just play music on speakers now for the Carousel. It didn't feel like there is a band organ. One thing I know is Al Bundy rode this in his childhood when it was at Riverview.

Love this wonderful carousel. Guess it need repainting since my last ride - 10 years ago? My favorite horse was the big white stander (now grey and black) draped in flowers that were pink and purple. Still beautiful, but I miss the pure white horse.

Can't hear the organ . It seems to be the same problem with all the carousels at 6 flags .

This carousel is the oldest ride at Six Flagp Over Georgia . Was featured in a movie and actress Julia Roberts once operated it in the early 70s as a employee .

It did at one time when it was at Riverview Park but I don't know what happened to it. You might want to go to carousels.org and email someone from the National Carousel Association to see if they know. That's where I get most of my information about classic carousels from.

In answer to your question, anyone can ride. However, there are rules for riders 42 inches and under. The rule is those riders must ride the outside row standing horses due to the fact that these riders run the risk of falling off the jumping horses. That is a Six Flags Over Georgia policy.

Well, you don't normally see a carousel with 5 horses in every row everyday, do ya? Hm? Nope. This carousel is a work of art, still meaning to be fun, but still needs to be preserved - especially by reducing the rider capacity and reducing speed. No matter if it's not as fun, it is beautiful to look at, especially to carousel fanatics like me.

If you’re looking for a more exciting carousel. Ride the Knoebels or Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk one. Those both still have the brass rings that you try to throw in the lion’s mouth. Or better yet, Cedar Downs at Cedar Point or Derby Racers at Rye Playland which is faster and has a cool racing feature.
