Kyle hops in the Rivian R1S to perform our usual highway range test! Join him as he finds out just how far this SUV will go with the 4 motor, 135kWh, all-terrain wheel / tire variant at a 70mph constant speed in a loop-style test. The official EPA estimate for the Large battery pack with Quad-Motor is 316 miles.

From Rivian, "The Dual-Motor and 21" wheel combination is the most efficient, with the 20” and 22” wheels having a range reduction of 10-15% and 5-10% respectively." That means that with the 21" tires the R1S should easily reach 300-325 miles of range at highway speeds. That is better than my Model Y and great for a full size three-row SUV. And the dual-motor is expected to be even more efficient. Well done, Rivian!

same range as the model X while being way less efficient
@ThePacalino
@ThePacalino Жыл бұрын
@@a-don13 This is a Range Rover full size SUV competitor, not a crossover as the Model X. This Rivian can tow 7700 lbs, go off-road, carry Kayaks, cargo boxes and even a roof top tent. Has tons of extra cargo space, almost 15 inches of ground clearance, etc. Again, this is the quad motor version with the off-road wheels and tires. I expect the dual motor with the 21" wheels to be more efficient. It won't be as efficient as the Model X because the boxy shape of the car results in a higher drag coefficient, a trade off that many people are willing to make for a more spacious and utilitarian vehicle. On top of everything, the interior quality is just at a different level. Finally, you are saving between $28-38K if you compare apples to apples. ($92K quad motor Rivian vs $130K Plaid Model X and $84K Dual motor Rivian vs $112K LR Model X.)

@@ThePacalino I was impressed with the R1S but this range test tipped the scale for me tbh. Generally for people wanting to buy an SUVs at this price range (assuming all Tesla models drop back down to normal pricing eventually and all Rivian models stays the same) the model X is so much quicker, way more efficient, and has a more comfortable 3rd row seating (which was surprising to me considering the boxy shape the R1S has). On paper I had R1S over model X few months ago but now it's slipped down for me.

@@acatic80ev's have similar range to cars in the 1980's into the early 2000's. Some exceptions, but by and large true. We're all electric and travel is so much more relaxed. You can't drive 600 miles without a stop and you shouldn't. With our model Y long range we go roughly 200 miles then plug in at a customer care center and add about 150 miles while we use the bathroom and stretch our legs. At level 3 chargers that takes 15 min. I drive my model 3 Performance between 250 and 280 miles per day. It costs me about $70 per month to drive that much. I was spending $900 per month in my Subaru outback plus oil changes once a month. Both cars were well under $50k each after the tax credits. Waiting isn't bad because EV's are only going to come down in price as battery tech improves. We're choosing to enjoy them now because for us they pencil.

How much does it cost to charge the rivian? If it’s 40 cents at a charger, would the math be, 135 x .40 = 55 dollars for a full 100% charge?
@The1andonlyBYack
@The1andonlyBYack Жыл бұрын
That is the full battery size, you won't deplete all the way down to 0 kW. You are correct on math, but an ICE SUV would be significantly more to fill with gas. Also, most American's can charge for a fraction of that at home (for my Tesla I pay .04 per kW). So I can fill my car for roughly $3-$4.

An idea for your reviews - tires. Ok, so hold on here for a bit - I don’t mean like Tire Rack reviews. I mean as to how it impacts range and, maybe over time, how well the hold up. Obviously, one must make sure they are good (safe, stop well, good handling, etc) Why am I bringing this up? Well, I have long been a Yokohama tire fan - from tack tires to performance road tires to GT tires. However, after having played with and researched the new Cross Climate 2 tires from Michelin, I picked them when needing to replace my Tesla Model S tires that were Yokohama AVID GTs (a great tire for the PNW as it does really well in the rain and the cool mornings on my drive to work and still handle well on the dry days on the drive home) The Cross Climate 2 tires are really amazing in the snow and cold - but we don’t get snow often enough to justify dedicated winter tires on my daily driver. They are very close to as good as dedicated winter tires but they don’t suck in warmer, drier times. *HOWEVER* there is a big difference between the AVID GTs and the Cross Climate 2: I get around 17% less range with the Cross Climate 2. (That is at best and in same conditions) This made me think about what the range of difference in driving efficiency is for tires of similar quality. (I don’t really care about ultra-efficient tires that have horrid stopping distances, etc - tires are the key to safety as they are what keep the car on the road and translate all of your inputs into actual motion) The other thing that is interesting is tire life on EVs - but that is being potentially covered elsewhere. The reason I am bringing this up is that you do so much with range and efficiency reviewing, there is a whole additional factor that would need to be looked at. PS - I think the Yokohama AVID GTs were actually better than the Tesla OEM tires - they handled well, had slightly less road noise, and may have been a bit better in efficiency (don’t have the right data for that as the travel habits changed around the same time I had to replace the OEM tires with the AVIDs so the data is not directly comparable)

You complained about someone going really slow at the end of your journey. I don't think it was that slow, and I will let you into a secret that most people know. Most forms of mechanical powered transport go further if driven slowly. This is especially true of EV's. Do you actually know what you are talking about ?

When the battery is dead at the end of his 70 mph tests, speed is important as he is trying to coast into the station. Its physics. If a car is going 50 mph and has no power left, it will coast/glide a further distance than if that same vehicle was going 25 mph. Watch more of his videos. You will find out Kyle knows what he is doing.

@@gregpochet4812 He apparently doesn't from a safety perspective. Very disappointing...

driving 25mph and having to constantly accelerate vs going 40 mph and taking it easy is vasty different, going slow the vehicle has to work harder to get going again. Some of my worst efficiency is when I'm driving slowly with a feather foot around town vs just going a near constant 30-50 mph
