I just hit 30k miles in 5.5 months of owning the Rivian R1T. While returning home from a humanitarian trip, a sedan and semi slid off the highway from an ice covered section South of Moab, UT. @@OffroadMylo I agree with Eric on the "Wow" factor. You sure you didn't bend or warp the frame around the hitch? Looked really violent. I understand the type of gear you used is supposed to reduce the impact on the truck. An update in the future about your hitch would be nice, even one showing that there is no damage. That would be more impressive. Get real technical with it too.

@@akaiPi.3.14 - I’ve heard of that happening and usually you’ll feel the truck ride funky if something is bent. This is why my 2nd attempt was better so I didn’t get yanked around beyond my first attempt. The side swipes is what often causes the frame or items to bend. I’m going to get my tires rotated and alight so I think at that point, I’ll know more. As of now, the truck runs like a champ!!

When I do some recoveries, I usually turn on my rear camera to see how much slack I have. I didn’t have much of a run for the initial pull/yank and thought I was screwed again. Then the torque just kicked in and it didn’t stop!! So impressive! Thank you for sharing and subscribing!

I’ve done it a few times. Keep an eye on your “stability” because mine would turn back on on its own. I always turn it off so I can bite all I want. I’ve had great luck using All Purpose mode at Standard Height and stability off.

I did just that during a snow storm up in Duluth MN. I packed my Factor 55 recovery gear into the R1S and went looking for people to help. I pulled a few collage kids out of the snow banks. It was completely effortless. I’m not sure I would have tried to pull a semi out though. It’s incredibly important to stick to the weight ratings for the equipment. My father, as an ER Doctor has warned me of some deaths he’s seen with trailer hitches snapping and recoiling into people’s faces/heads.

It was the momentum from the yank which got the Semi trailer moving. Good nothing broke off since the cable can come flying at you. In contrast, slow pulling is limited by tire friction, which is determined by the weight on the tires. If your drivetrain can make the tires slip, no engine could give any more pulling power.

This is why knowing your recovery gear is crucial. Factor55 has all their MBS etc printed on their products and has tons of training manuals on the limits of their products. This recovery was well within those limit.

I was amazed too because the tree saver didn't have any abrasions!! Factor55 makes some dang good recovery gear! I was on the 20's. I got my R1T with the 20's and couldn't be confident enough with where I go for my photography assignments so I swapped them out with General Grabber AT/X and they bite!!!

It’s amazing! I wanted to push the Rivian hard in the first 20k miles because I wanted to seal my feelings about getting the R1S. We have a deposit down for one and I’m glad we do! Can’t wait to get the R1S too!! The cool thing is you can make a deposit and if you don’t want to continue, get a simple refund.

Rex, good questions. I used the Extreme Duty Kinetic Energy rope from Factor55. I gave it some punch for the initial yank then floored it hence the wheel spin because he was just spinning on frozen snow. For drive modes, I wasn’t in tow mode. All Putpose, turned off stability and standard ride height. Towing in a straight line is always better than pulling away in an angle. That’s why m first try I slid sideways. It’s always tricky with the environment and have to make do with what you have. Definitely get the HitchLink 2.0 and either a Crosby or a couple soft shackles from Factor55. I’ve been using their stuff for a loooooong time!

The Rivian gear kit comes with factor55, but I think they include a tow strap, so I added a few snatch straps and soft shackles, plus a few dampeners. Looks like you went with a different set of tires too, and I may follow your lead as I gear up for spring and summer off roading.

I was in All Purpose, Standard Ride Height and turned off Stability. I don’t think stability can be turned off in tow mode. I tried and it was a no go on another rescue. BUT, when you’re in the moment, getting in and out of the truck. Parking, reverse, etc… the Rivian system will go back to the default drive settings so I keep my Drive Mode screen on when I’m wheeling or pulling people out.
