Automotive history is lost if not retold every once in a while. A sadly considerable amount of what this video has in it was news to me. I thought I knew everything. The look on my daughter's face when she learned that Chevrolet drove a Buick was priceless!!

Research and development in industry's skunk works is always (and I mean always) shrouded in secrecy because of a thing called "industrial espionage". Your competitors will steal your eyes if you let them. That explains why the historic records on such things is sketchy. Makes sense, doesn't it...?

Louis Chevrolet was a race car guy. He was very disappointed with Durant's decision to use the brand name for a low budget offering, he wanted Cadillac's prestige.

In his book "My Years With General Motors" Sloan casts aside the talent of Durant as being a PT Barnum type with eyes bigger than his stomach when it came to integrating his acquisitions. While I think Sloan's era was amazing, he inherited a brilliant consolidation project envisioned by Durant.

David Dunbar Buick made the first V6 engine back in 1912, which means many years later became the regal Grand national after that the 3800V6, GM took credit for the engine but it was David Buick creativity that later allowed GM to claim world history for their V6 technology.

David Dunbar Buick was born in Scotland. But isn't "Buick" a French name...? I guess that the Buick acquisition was mostly valuable to Will Durant because of the OHV patant. Maybe that explains why GM's Buick Division always got the lion's share of GM's R&D money in their skunk works even as late as the 1960's.
@benjaminvalenzuela39483 жыл бұрын
That’s interesting, I didn’t know Buick held the OHV patent.
@ThomasDeLello3 жыл бұрын
@@benjaminvalenzuela3948 Well... I didn't either until I came to this video. All through the history of the Industrial Revolution, Research and Development (also known as "The Skunk Works") has by necessity been shrouded in secrecy because of a thing called "Industrial Espionage" which basically means 'cover your ass or they will steal your eyes'... so facts and such can be sketchy about the details. That's the fact of life. Governmental Patent Coverage is key. But now, due to differences in political ideologies where Communism does not honor private property over governmental control you have the ChiComs stealing everything while Joe Biden gives it all away to them. Your pension will not be worth the paper it's printed on when you retire and you will find yourself on the short end of a ration line with your hat in your hand... Good luck...!!!
