Believe it or not a lot of the lines of this are lifted directly from the original book- that’s part of what makes it so good. Choosing to have Gonzo play Charles Dickens was a fantastic move so that they could do that, it added an extra something in my opinion. Also I’m glad they went with the creepy factor with the ghost of Christmas past in this, I remember finding that spirit pretty creepy in the book. And Michael Caine treating everyone else as Shakespeare level actors worked perfectly, as opposed to the equally successful trick Tim Curry used which was to just become a human muppet in Muppet’s Treasure Island. Great reaction! Thank you so much, this is my favourite Christmas film and I’m glad to see it brought you so much joy :)

Caine took his role seriously. He said he'd do it as if he were acting against royal Shakespeare actors. 😮😮😮😮

and he nailed it! (of course) I know it's cliche to say that you can't imagine anyone else doing this role, but in this case, it's be pretty tough to beat Sir Michael

Highly recommend muppet treasure island, where Tim Curry shows us that the exact opposite approach can also be wildly successful. That man came in and became a giant muppet, and it was also gold. But this shall forever be my favorite Christmas carol.

There was a song that Belle sang when leaving that they cut from the theatrical release. They thought it was too sad for a kids movie, but it really is key to Scrooge's character, and the song at the very end is a reprise of the tune. They should have left it in. You can find the extended version of the movie that includes it if you look for it.

I was born in 1966 and was three years old when Sesame Street debuted. My big sister’s kindergarten sent home a note in which they recommended that the children watch it. Mom told me years later that that was the only time the school ever recommended a television show to the parents. Then, I was nine when The Muppet Show debuted, and 13 when the first Muppet Movie hit the big screen. So, the Muppets were always a huge part of my childhood. Jim Henson’s death was the first celebrity death to really hit me hard-I sobbed when I heard the news.

So true! And it completely works. To your point, it's so hard to strike just that right tone without looking ridiculous next to puppets. Just an excellent movie overall. I get the love for this movie now ❤️

I just showed this to my dad coz we're doing 12 days of Christmas films. It's so funny you said about Rowling coz when it got to Emily with her twins I was like, that's Mrs Weasley and the twins. 😂 I also love the song that they edited out, The Love is Gone. They took it out because they thought it would make children too sad and they wouldn't understand it which is so daft considering how spooky most of the film is. Plus it's core to the theme of the movie as he chooses a path away from love and shows that he is capable of feeling, which is why the movie finishes with the song with him choosing the path he gave up so long ago. Also, Michael Caine gives a fantastic performance in this movie and always makes me cry during that part.

Brilliant movie. Christmas tradition to watch this one every year (although because of my wonky schedule I only managed to finish it today lol). I love (as many others of pointed out) the seriousness Michael Caine puts in his role. Whenever he cries I get emotional. I love how a muppet movie ended up being one of the most accurate adaptations of A Christmas Carol. It’s great. The only nitpick is you didn’t manage to watch the extended version (which happens to also be on Disney +) because the added song really adds context to the character….. Anyways, great reaction, and I hope to be able to watch more of your videos than I have been the last couple months!

This is one of the better adaptations of Christmas Carol imo and a big part of that is the future segment. Too often Scrooge is mainly portrayed as being ignorant of what's going on up until the last second and then it somehow comes across like he's more scared of dying than how he'll be remembered. In this one he's already changing by the time he meets Future but it breaks him and truly cements it. He knows the truth about the grave early on after meeting Future but doesn't want to accept it. It's not a blindside like in so many other versions which allows more focus on the heartbreak than a "gotcha" moment pulled on him.

The two old men playing the Marley Brothers are Statler and Waldorf - you can see a shop at the end named after them as Scrooge is going past with all the gifts. Also there was only one Marley in the book but they added the brother to put the old men together and make a joke - Robert Marley aka Bob Marley 😊 There’s irony of Scrooge giving the bookkeepers coal. Being given coal for Christmas was actually supposed to be a punishment for children who misbehaved instead of receiving an orange fruit or a toy. In this the bookkeepers were cold and they needed it.
