@@stopthephilosophicalzombie9017I'd reverse them too. Sopranos was extraordinary but it kind of lost its mojo for a bit whereas Mad Men always was extraordinary. For those of us "Of a Certain Age" as the French say it was impossible at times not to be distracted thinking "OMG, mom had one of those!"
@homeygfunkoffacherryfruitl49713 жыл бұрын
I'll go ahead and be the millionth person to point this out but: I love the Mad Men intro because of how it literally plays out the entire series right in front of your eyes in a nice concise little 30 or so second animatic. You get Don Draper starting at the top of the advertising world, he's got everything he could ever want. Then it all starts to fall out from under him and he begins to plummet. We see him fall past all the vices that are responsible for his downfall in the form of advertisements: Women, booze, power, etc. Like you almost don't even need to watch the show to know what it's about just from this intro. Never let it be said that the guys who come up with the intro for shows don't deserve as much credit as the rest of the staff.
@MisterDutch932 жыл бұрын
@@hexstrr I would say that those vices are Don's temptations that he has trouble letting go of. Because of his assumed persona, his 'fake life' that he desperately wants to hold onto, Don's world is all about maintaining an illusion (both for himself and others). Nobody really knows Don, including himself. He tries to bury his past and move on, but along the course of the show, we start to find out that he really can't do that. He feels empty and directionless. A way to cope with this empty feeling is to pour himself into his work. When his work starts to fail, he resorts to booze and women. These vices aren't inherently what causes his downfall though. I would rather say that his fake image is the most important reason why his world starts to crumble. Women, power and booze are his form of escapism. Don represents superficiality. He works as an 'adman' selling lies, he has a hard time loving people and has multiple affairs. Couple that with the toxic masculinity of the 60s and you have a recipe for disaster. The showrunners didn't place him in that hippie retreat accidentally. Don found 'himself' when he finally stopped lying to himself. He entered the 70s and shedded his old 'nuclear family man' skin. That's how I see it anyway. There are probably a million other ways to interpret this show.

Amazing how music AND movies/TV shows can evoke all sorts of feelings including a sense of awe, and the sense of being taken to another world. Madmen as a TV show/work of art should probably be played on a continual loop in The Louvre. This music as a theme song could perhaps NOT be replaced EVER by any other music PERIOD. (But an experiment in psychology could PERHAPS be performed by subjecting select people who have NEVER seen the show, to it, by utilizing a different theme song and asking certain questions to see how and/or how much attitudes/perceptions to the show can be compared to people like me who think this music is THE ONLY song that can be used as a theme song to Madmen.
