Super weird how I got here... but just yesterday I was showing my son a video about binaural audio (the binaural audio Verge video) and he asked me why they dont use binaural audio more in movies and tv shows. I really didnt have a good explanation for that, but now I do. Thanks guys.
@KevinSenzaki9 жыл бұрын
Spazum888 Too add a few additional thoughts on binaural audio specifically, it's historically been a prohibitively expensive format, and in the pre-Walkman days, headphones weren't as popular an option. Film/TV audio historically moved from mono to stereo to various versions of surround sound, so they're (for the moment) sort of parallel processes; modern affordable binaural recording is a pretty new thing. There's two other creative factors worth considering: film audio is stylized for focus on dialogue and story clarity, so voices almost always sit center-channel, even if it doesn't match the frame. Recording the voice separate (and other elements like foley) allow for editorial and mixing choices during post-production, that wouldn't be possible with a two-channel binaural recording (what you record is what you get). Also, film often includes non-diegetic elements like music, which might be difficult to "place" in binaural audio. Additionally, most films are still made with a "theatrical-like" presentation in mind (or at least the option to watch with a group), which would make binaural audio difficult, as each viewer would need their own set of headphones to properly re-create the effect. That all being said, I do think the current affordability and popularity of binaural recording is an open opportunity to develop a new niche in film language that incorporates it - particularly with panoramic video and VR already basically here. I'm really excited by it, and I fully expect to be hearing more binaural audio in the future. (As a final thought, it's also possible to simulate binaural with software, it could be possible to convert existing films to binaural mixes.)

+Spazum888 Check out The Truth on Radiotopia. It's a podcast that uses binaural audio to tell fictional stories in the tradition of old radio dramas.

These videos are so good! Thank you! I've done a few sound design gigs for webseries', and while I think we did pretty well considering our experience at the time, I definitely feel like I'm picking up a lot of small tips here that could have really pushed things over the edge in quality. Well produced videos for this stuff just aren't common enough, so thank you again.

Really sound advice here (sorry, had to) Foley will always take some tweaking (shouldn't ever be considered plug and play except for roughs), so it would be cool to see an episode where all original foley media is voiced sounds and you have to layer adjustments to get it where you want it to be.

Hey Kevin! Im a young filmmaker and was wondering if you have advice on cameras. I might be asking the wrong guy, but would you recommend a Canon EOS Rebel T5 or a Canon EOS Rebel SL1 ? I know that both of these are really cheap, but I'm investing in a DSLR. Thanks for posting these tutorials, and keep up the good work !

Do you generally sync sound in earlier or later stages of editing?
@KevinSenzaki8 жыл бұрын
That's done early on when footage is being brought in and organized into the picture editing software. Once you've started actually cutting (and removing slates from shots, etc.), it becomes a lot more difficult to do. Also, audio quality can affect editorial decisions (wide shots may have poor on board camera audio, if it's even available), so you definitely want to edit with all your elements from set in-place.

I have a doubt. What would be the better way to improve the voice recording in the "(unlike this room!)" scenario. I assume that all the reverb is because it's a big indoor space. A lavalier mic would catch all the reverb too?
@KevinSenzaki9 жыл бұрын
Microphone type affects how much room is recorded; lav mics and cardioid condensers (vs shotgun mics) can help. Sound blankets can also improve the sound of a room. While it shouldn't be relied upon, reverb reduction plugin software is also getting to a fairly usable point as well.

@Kevin... i have the h1 zoom smaller obviously...but love that lil sucker,.
@KevinSenzaki9 жыл бұрын
+heather beck The main difference is the H1 has a mini jack (3.5 mm) input, while the bigger siblings (H4, H6, etc.) have XLR inputs, which are the "industry standard" mic cable type. The built-in stereo mics should still work solid though, and we use some mini jack mics ourselves, too. And honestly, even a "small" recorder like the H6 can be a bit bulky when traveling light; there's definitely some great uses for an H1 :p

I feel like the sound from that short doesn't blend well into the ambient noise though. You can tell that it is recorded after the fact. I'm not sure if that was done for effect, or for teaching purposes though.
@KevinSenzaki9 жыл бұрын
Rob Fike I went for intentionally stylized foley, particularly considering a large amount viewers for KZbin are on mobile - it takes a little extra level to make it convey on all platforms. A lot of it is the style of the film, but also personal taste - foley footsteps in big-budget films will still bug me sometimes. Anything in particular stick out to you?
@RobFike9 жыл бұрын
I think it's the combo of only small amounts of presence/ambient sound then overly punchy sound effects (the gun rustling etc) - perhaps a bit too loud and overpowering compared to the situation. I would have to watch the actual short again to give any more depth.
@KevinSenzaki9 жыл бұрын
The clips in this tutorial are exaggerated (and have backgrounds/music stripped out) for demonstration purposes. The mix in the short is different.

What I want to know is why some people put sound (like voice in podcasts or such) only on one side and it sounds like it lacks some frenquencies. Honestly, it sounds very bad and even if the video is good I just want to quit it. In some cases it makes sense to have sounds on differents sides like on a video where a dude tests a guitar amp with two differents mics and one is on each side but in most cases it's just ugly.
@KevinSenzaki9 жыл бұрын
***** Hard panning (having sound come exclusively out of the left or right channel) can be pretty uncomfortable, particularly with headphones. I personally also prefer a slightly more balanced pan (say, an 80/20 split, so the sound is 4/5ths in one ear, but softly playing at 1/5 volume in the other) since it feels more natural - your ears in real life rarely hear something exclusively on one side. As to why this happens sometimes, my best guess is that in most cases people are doing their sound on speakers, where even a 100% hard pan to one side will still be heard with both ears. For anything going online, I always test on headphones for this exact reason, among others.

Gun foley is stupid and annoying and i found out about it being a thing only cause it was so annoying to me that i had to give my enemy a name. It destroys every context to the depth of the story as the viewer is reminded of the sound porn the responsibility of carrying a gun delivers making it all about the gun. I hate this.
