Hey man, I feel obliged to say this. Before I found this video I was a shit guitarist. Two months ago I started each of these exercises. I made a comment at that time (later deleting it) where I vowed to take this practice seriously. Every morning with coffee, without fail. Using a metronome and a desire to make things sound as clean and precise as possible, I have mastered each exercise. Even the sixteenth notes. Playing across the entire fretboard (still gets muddy towards fret 15, but improving). As a result, I have noticed my ability to play my current selection with the technical precision that your drills have taught. I cannot emphasize enough how grateful I am to you and to this instrument, which I believe is teaching more about life than any formal education I have ever received. Much love brother. Thank you again.
#4 practice playing unplugged at night in pitch darkness. This is incredibly important as it forces you to trust your hands not your eyes. Its also incredibly useful because u never know what stage lighting will be like at a gig. I can't tell u how many times im on stage and some soundguy us trying to be creative and cut off the Damn lights...

If you wouldn’t mind sharing, how many minutes did you play these every day and how long did it take you more or less to notice improvement? Thanks.
@TARRS15 жыл бұрын
I played these about 15-45 minutes everyday in three 15 minutes sessions throughout the day. I began noticing improvement on the third day. The first exercise in particular allowed me to really familiarize myself with the width between each string. I've always had problems with my ring finger accuracy, so now I can really feel the muscle memory in my finger placement as I move around the fret board. It also stretches my fingers in a way that allows me to play for longer periods of time without cramping up.

Mmm, I know half the players out there don’t place their thumb on the back of the guitar’s neck for support and for speed, but just wrap it around the neck instead, where it “feels comfortable” (to them), and because they can kinda fret some low notes with their thumb that way, and after all that’s how _Hendrix_ played*, so how could it be wrong?? Yet, I will maintain until my dying day, your thumb belongs on the back of the neck, supporting your fingers. Wrapping it around the neck is pretty wrong. I mean …live and let live? …whatever works for you, at the end of the day? BUT - I can play better and faster with my thumb placed right, on the back of the neck, and I wish more self-taught players would try it for enough of a length of time to see if their playing doesn’t improve - I think that, after a few months, with their thumb placed right, they’d be pleasantly surprised to be playing better and faster! So I like your suggestions, but feel I must sound a note of caution about your finger-strength suggestion, and urge your readers not to grow accustomed to what many consider a bad habit. 🎸 *Although his hands were so big he could barre the whole neck with his thumb while shaping chords with his fingers!
@alejandroblanco20715 жыл бұрын
My take on that is to let your hand and thumb adjust naturally around the neck. When I started learning guitar I took classical guitar lessons for several years (which meant placing the thumb right behind the neck) then I started playing electric and discovered so many outstanding players that would wrap-around the wood with their thumbs, I embraced that too and my hand started feeling right & kept hearing & paying attention to that dinosaur bullshit about technique "you have to play a certain way otherwise is wrong" over & over. Soon I realized those preaching that kind of Gospel are so out of touch and close-minded and usually don't make musical or artistic statements , they're just "technique" practitioners... Also experiencing Pat Metheny live in concert creating such wonderful and magical music passages at slow ,mid and considerably fast tempos and everything in between with his thumb placed almost on top of the fretboard made me think, dang! an academic player & studious of the jazz styles is doing it "wrong" but he's leaving a musical foot print since he came out on the scene . That validated my inner belief of going different routes & applying different manners and "techniques" in order to serve the musical discourse and & those pretending to write the "Bible" on doing things one way "the right technique", are establishing limitations for themselves and others...

Hey RJ, I started doing these exercises, and recently bought Rock Discipline since you mentioned that they came from that book. Unfortunately, I'm already feeling extremely discouraged because I can't get my fingers in some of the positions, especially when I have to separate my second and third fingers. And I'm only on part one of the warm up exercises! I've been playing guitar for a few years, but I guess maybe I never challenged myself enough to make tougher stretches. Any tips??
@Gajoobles4 жыл бұрын
Take your time with the shapes, hold them there for a bit, it won't be comfortable and it may take a week of just focusing on that aspect to see progress. Often for really tricky shapes/positions just looking at the movement alone and working on that really slowly can get you moving forward but obviously it can get boring but you just gotta get passed that.

The first one is great for getting the right hand to listen to your brain's internal rhythm. The first time I tried it, I almost threw the book away. But it got easier in a short amount of time.. If you find yourself getting too frustrated, just stop, shake your hands out, and say to yourself, "reset." Then start over. Great video!

The Rock Discipline chromatic exercises made a world of difference. It took time for the motion to set in, but after the first year of running through the chromatic exercises my picking has transformed.

It really helped me too! It's amazing how it improves the right hand accuracy.

I feel the same seemed to keep my picking tighter and made me more aware of how many strokes i do per string

That last exercise reminds me on how I've been trying to practice my muscle memory for my basic chords by closing my eyes while switching between them. Will be trying these new exercises now as well!

I feel like the third one was more of a advertisement for PRS guitars' intonation than a legitimate exercise 😂. Great video!

Dude the video of you playing the guild Starfire made me dig out my old crappy guitar and try and play again after many years. Inspirational to me . Thanks . One day hopefully I'll have saved enough to get Starfire too. Thanks man .
