@@RJRonquillo I've been using devilles and deluxes for decades. When using humbucker guitars, you can roll back on the volumes on your guitar to get rid of that fizzy grit. I like the mid pickup position to get a nice mix of the two pickups and then you can balance them. Once youve got that dialed in, youll find the same pedal settings that work for your strat will work for your Paul. Plus, for high points in solos you can roll up the neck pick up for crazy singing sustain

When I got my first electric, my wife bought me the 410 HR DeVille, because it just sounded so much better than the others. This was back in 2004. It’s too much for my needs, particularly in a NYC apartment which is the only place I play it. Great to hear appreciation for the HRD, even if it is an alternate ML version.

All of the DeVille amps are fantastic! I have 1996 Hot Rod DeVille 4x10 I bought used a few years ago, but have also played the 2x12 version, the ML version and the Blues DeVille. These are honestly all amazing in their own right! Great clean tone, amazing pedal platforms, great onboard reverb and they all sound good at low volumes and cranked. Get a jhs black box and you will literally never need another amp again 😄 I have played everything from Jazz and Indie-Pop to extreme metal on these and they can easily do it all…as long as you don’t use their drive channel, cause they’re not very good at all.

For me I have a 15w blues jr. I was nervous it wouldn't be loud enough but I've played small clubs not mic'd , theaters and outside mic'd and I've yet to find a need to upsize to a multiple speaker 50w amp. Even with little blues jr I'm told to turn down by sound guys 9/10 times lol. I just played a fire hall not mic'd and it still boomed all the way to the back. Probably on an outdoor gig I could use this. Sounding great as always RJ, thanks for all your knowledge and expertise!

I'm now using a modeler through an frfr, and I've never been happier. Most useful tip out of this video: For high headroom amps, place the harshest fizzy sounding drive pedal at the beginning of the chain. And if you want to smooth out its tone place another (preferably transparent sounding) drive pedal after that giving the amp a little bit of break up. You'd be surprised with the results. Even my infamous Boss DS-1 is shining :)

Thank you! The term pedal platform has always baffled me. I've had "great pedal platform" amps before and as soon as you kick on a good distortion pedal, the amp sounds awful. Harsh, brittle, etc. and you can't seem to eq the pedal nor the amp to compensate. I wish companies and reviewers would stop using delays and reverbs and chorus pedals to justify an amp as a good pedal platform. So glad to finally hear someone of your expertise share the same opinion I've had over the years.

Great amp!!! I'm a biased owner of one, though. I use it at home on volume 2, shaping the tone and adding a very slight gristle with a wampler tumnus. Sounds massive with a good fuzz in front :) the reverb in the amp is NOT a real spring reverb, but does a very good job mimicing the real deal. (A note for all the vigilantes there - the amp wont splash when you smash it in the end of your concerts!)

These are fantastic gigging amps. I considered buying one if not for the Tonemaster Twin. I just like the BF sound and ability to use an AB switcher to output the fuzzes and effects to the normal channel and keep the vibrato side for cleans/tremolo. Don’t know how different that amp electronics is from the original Hot Rod series. I picked up an original Hot Rod deluxe with a known issue of it cutting out. Price was right. And I wanted a warm up session before building the StewMac clone of the Deluxe Reverb. Anyway there’s an issue ( more than one but the big one) with those two big rectangular 5w voltage dropping resistors on the main board. They get really hot and burn the board. I bought a repair kit and a tube replacement set to be covered. Also a bias setup. Those voltage resistors are to drop the 48 volts down to around 16 for operation of a couple of relays. When my amp would get warmed up the heat from one of the resistors would heat up the board and the trace would go open. I put the new resistors in and stood them off the board with ceramic spacers that came in the kit. Trouble shooting the board required bypassing the broken trace with a wire. Not telling you what to do but I’d preemptively change out those two 5W resistors and give them some air flow. Save you some grief and down time later on. I watch this gentleman’s videos often. Top shelf information. You do great videos and I try to catch what I can on your channel. Cheers 👍 kzbin.info/www/bejne/fHfGhGWvbL18htEsi=TkONb7b0zHNuKCs-

I used every amp from brown Fender deluxe to black face fender deluxe to 50 W Marshall heads, 235 W music band heads to legend combos Marshall combos -I used to always set my amps on that edge of dirt roll off the volume to clean. Secondly, I never used a distortion pedal. I did use an early MXR phase 90 when they first came out. I did have a small stone for a while but I like phase 90 better and occasionally a dyna comp . I did use an Ibanez as chorus. Pedal an echoplex and then later on when the analog delays came out I had a little ibanez analog delay and then I went to a digital . Still gigging occasionally in my early 70s. My rig is a 67 black face.Vibroluxe reverb And a SUHR hombre combo occasionally in stereo. i've moved onto some effects now Keeley compressor old ibanez cs9 chorus maxon 808 line 6 DL4.

Great video! I agree with using a clean amp and getting the best tones through pedals. I have played with two guys with these DeVille’s and I personally didn’t like them but this is a new mod on that amp. 60 watts is too loud for any gigs that I have played and 20-28 watts has been better. Hello Rj! I’ve been kind of interested in your channel for a while. It started with your episode about trying to get strings of different sizes to get a jangly affect like some of Hendrix’s early sounds. I don’t really think it’s a good idea these days. Maybe you agree with me. I want to talk to you about an episode did with Brett Papa five years ago. “How to make your solos Rock. Fusing blues Rock and Jazz! At about 17:30 to 18:30 time code there’s a specific riff that you play that I’ve heard before somewhere maybe from the Viscounts playing Harlem Nocturne. Not sure. To me it kinda means the end of something. Or a funeral. I can also hear octaves being played in my head. But instead of ending with that riff, I decided to start with it and then make a melody that eventually ends with that riff. Kind of a Latin based melody. I recorded myself vocalizing the riff at the beginning, then the melody and then ending with that riff. I can send it to. I’m worried that someone will steal that riff and my arrangement. Do you have an email where you can also scan for it virus. Is it at your website. Please let me know. Thanks I hope you do record something, an album or something. I hope to hear from you.

Sadly, all versions of Fender Blues/Hot Rod amps has the same problem, Fender have known 30 years and done nothing to fix it, on the bottom of the PCB board there is two gray ceramic resistors that are so close to PCB board that they cook it and then the amp will fail all the time, they should have lifted so there is air gap between the resistors and board. so they don't fry the board

Have an original Blues DeVille 2x12. Was really loud and almost unmanagable until I did the Frommel upgrade kit. Sounds much better after that. It can do clean ok but not like the ML. But heavy as all hell.

Nice Video. Thanks for sharing. How is the fender tone master for pedals? The reason why I am asking is because it is light to carry. And no tubes. Thank you

That's how I've felt as well; not every clean amp handles OD pedals well without having some frequency or artifact that's simply unpleasant to the ears. I'm back to using amp gain again after all these years, but if I were playing a gig, pedals would be the way to go. Saves a lot of headache.

Simpler is always better. I always found Fender clean always had that mid range cut and sweet treble boost which made guitars and pedals shine.

Wasn't the original HR DeVille a 40 watter? I played a friend's HRD and I thought it was an amazing pedal platform amp. Plenty loud and very quiet as well. I was tempted to buy one, but tried to sound different when we played together by using a Boogie, or a baby Marshall combo. It worked, but I was a bit jealous of his tone.

I always wanted to get a Deville for a good price and make it bullet proof. I build and work on amps more than I play guitar. So it would be a fun project to build and then sell to a working guitarist.
