The most adept players always make self deprecating remarks about their abilities. The playing is among the best I have heard on a demo and still awesome if it were on a record. Both rigs are awesome and do exactly what they say. The Plexi makes the little blues junior sound like Stevie Ray, Hendrix and with overdrive cranked like Van Halen when he occasionally uses a single coil like on finish what you started. The OMG overdrive is more modern, still very bluesy but mimics Kotzen's modern blues tone perfectly assuming toy have the chops to burn legato Blues like Kotzen which this guy clearly has. With a.hot pickup both units would give awesome smooth distortion with the Plexi sounding more like Classic Van Halen and Ac/Dc depending on gain. The Omg with a hot pickup sounds modern and heavy but also does Satriani smooth legato distortion with boost employed, about 30-50% gain with the right delay setting. Owning both would be an easy way to unlocking any blues or hard classic or heavy modern Rock. With a thicker amp tone (like hooking into a Marshall or Boogie instead of a pristine fender clean the RK5 could get into modern metal territory although there are pedals by Mess, Randall, Wampler etc that are more suited to serious metal. If blues rock is your thing both units would give you everything from Free, Frampton and Cream to Van Halen, and the eighties and no ties metal bands plus modern hard rock. All you would need is an ultra high gain pedal and you could do it all on s Fenddr 30 watt plus at any club and with a MArshall or a twin you could Rock a stadium. Awesome demo and seriously awesome gear each for under $300 makes these an excellent choice for the gigging musician of any level. Throw away your pedal boards and racks. These 2 do the same thing just as well if not better because you don't need a guitar tech to get awesome tones. They are idiot proof

Thanks for the comparison. After hearing them both with a rig similar to mine (Strat into Blues Jr.) I decided on the original FR5, mainly due to the tones being more in line with the stuff I play. Though I'll probably get the other one or a fuzz pedal to put in front of it. Nice playing. Through my laptop the sound was a bit thin, but warmed right up with some decent headphones on.

Great Apples & Oranges comparison Boyan Hristov (the reference was not lost on me) between the FR5 & the RK5. I was impressed by your A/B-ing both units. Kudos to Tech21nyc What an excellent and well executed idea of combining 3 essential effects in a compact size unit (taking up only a small footprint) I really liked the tap tempo feature! (I just wished it had a Headphone jack, to use for late night Home/Hotel practice) I could never give up my ***** JCM 800 Amps, however this is the perfect solution for long distance / Flyaway Gigs! #Tech21NYC #Plexi #MarshallAmps #JCM800

Great demo and REALLY nice playing, I have to say I was impressed and I dig your band as well!! The RK5 seems like a good way to go if you wanted a simple rig. It sounds pretty amazing. I've seen Richie play twice in the Winery Dogs and once with his solo band in the past year and half and his tone was great every time and I spotted the RK5 on stage every time. The first time I saw it I tried to figure out what it was the entire show then went home and looked it up. To be honest though I think he would sound great playing through anything. Nice Demo! I have a Flyrig 5 and with a Les Paul one of my favorite tones is the Sans Amp with some verb and just the hot button engaged but not the plexi drive....gives it just enough of a boost to drive the front end of a tube amp for a really smooth tone. @boyan.guitar10 жыл бұрын
Awesome, thanks Mike! Hope you got it by now. How do you like it?
@stuntman_mike10 жыл бұрын
Yeah it arrived a few days ago! I was planning on running it through my Atomic Reactor 112 but the hum is so bad I've only been able to try it out through a Yamaha THR10. I do like how it sounds but it looks like I may be picking up a Tech 21 Power Amp now...lol.
@boyan.guitar10 жыл бұрын
hehe, have no fear, if the Tech21 amps were good enough for Les Paul, they're good enough for the rest of us. Where's the hum coming from? I had to google Atomic Reactor, wow, looks very cool, I have to say. I find that I like the RK5 the way RK uses it - in front of a tube amp.
@stuntman_mike10 жыл бұрын
The hum is unbearable as it's coming through the speaker. I'm assuming it's because of the way the RK5 is designed since it mentions that if using one with a power engine to buy a grounding plug for the xlr input. My reactor doesn't have a xlr input or I would try that with mine. I played with it some more earlier tonite through the yamaha and it really is a cool versatile pedal.
@boyan.guitar10 жыл бұрын
Mike Stewart I don't know anything about XLR input, I only use 1/4' guitar cables regardless if I'm going straight in the board or in an amp. Mine doesn't hum, other than the usual noise and hum you get when you have the OMG cranked, but that's normal. The SansAmp has some noise, but that's normal too.

Scooping the mids for all nu-metal and metalcore metalheads, you meant! I think the key of a good metal tone is in mids and tweaking treble and presence right, with bass knob not being at more than 2 or even 3. Mids are important, people! :)

Hi, love the comparison you did there, and excellent chops! I'm currently using FR5, and noticed that there is slight drop in volume when plexi is off, or rise in volume when it's on. So the 'clean' sound is barely audible through the mix, unless I raise the level in the mixer, but then plexi is just too loud. I'm pretty sure I'm having trouble with setting the level/gain controls properly. Any suggestions based on your experience? (SansAmp level is on 3 o'clock, and plexi is on 9, with gain around 12-2 o'clock). Thanks, and keep rocking!

@boyan.guitar9 жыл бұрын
+tony lo Thank you. I've used the RK5 straight to board, on a gig, only a few times, 4 to be precise. The 1st time was at a wedding and it didn't work at all. The 2nd time was a more laid back gig with my trio and I was able to dial it in with my tele. The overdrive isn't my favorite, but it caries nicely - long notes, sustain. I did a couple of more gigs recently with the RK5 but no videos yet and I'm afraid I still favor the FR5 for going direct. The RK5 obviously sounds amazing with a guitar amp, they both do.

Great, great, great review. I'm an FR5 kinda guy, I love that transparency! And if you can get the lowend that tight out of a Blues Jr, it'll tighten up anything!
@boyan.guitar9 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks Andrew, I like the FR5 too. The BJ is modded: BillM mods, Mercury Magnetics OT and PT, Cannabis Rex speaker. Much improvement in the low end, a lot louder than before and it just feels more manly in the low end. I love the FR5 going direct though, that's how I use it and absolutely love it. Cheers from Boston.
@acammer9 жыл бұрын
Boyan Hristov Everything I always wanted to do to my BJ. Explains the low end - MM Transformer and a CanniRex. My buddy did about the same set of mods to his, really did wake it up. I'm an EL84 guy, but I've moved on from the BJ. My buddy just ordered the FR5, so I'll be test driving his next week, and then probably ordering my own!
@boyan.guitar9 жыл бұрын
Andrew Cammer Thanks Andrew! The BJ is the only amp I've had, I'm poor, though I've played some others, including an old plexi. Take your time with the FR5. Half a year of gigging with it and I feel like I've only scratched the surface. So many possibilities of getting results from the SansAmp alone, then when you add the Plexi and pedals in front of it, it's endless. Then add going direct vs. going into an amp… My head will explode. Either way, life has improved as now I can walk into a gig with a guitar and the FR5 in my pocket and worry about vendor meals instead going through the kitchen with a cart with gear haha…
@Hoodrio10 жыл бұрын
Your playing is excellent, and your demos are much appreciated; but I wish you would tell which pickup you are playing on at any given time. It sounds like much of the time you are using the in-between 2/4 Stratocaster settings, which in my opinion color the tone too much to be useful for demo purposes. I'd rather hear just the bridge alone and neck alone. Otherwise, great!
@boyan.guitar10 жыл бұрын
Thanks! If you play a strat you'll probably be able to tell what position I'm on.
@Hoodrio10 жыл бұрын
Boyan Hristov Yes, I can tell what position you are using. My point is that the 2/4 Strat positions by the nature of their out-of-phase "quack" color the tone much more than an individual neck, middle, or bridge position and are therefore not well suited for tone demonstrations- particularly with overdrive. You want as clear a pickup signal as possible so that what we are hearing is the tone of the pedal. Again, this is a very MINOR criticism - overall I think your demonstrations are fantastic and much appreciated!

@boyan.guitar8 жыл бұрын
+wj74 to me it's the other way around
@wj748 жыл бұрын
Boyan Hristov It sounds decent but not optimal. Here's how. If you run two distortion pedals into an amp and they're on at the same time, it sucks because they're both competing for the same job. It becomes over saturated and you'll end up needing to dial one out. A combo amp is just a preamp into a power amp into a speaker. A guitar can run direct into that. A guitar cannot successfully run direct into a board powered only by a power amp because it's missing a preamp. The middle pedal of the RK5 is a preamp pedal. But to run a preamp pedal into a combo amp doubles the preamp similar to running two distortions pedals simultaneously. One preamp has to get dialed down to let the other go thru or it will suck. That was ran thru a clean channel of an amp and it was "ok". I'm confident had that been straight into a board with no preamp to compete, it would've been better. Much better. That RK5 is the real deal when ran correctly.
@wj748 жыл бұрын
Btw, you're fine player!

I doubt there's a right or wrong way to use such a piece of gear. yes, 2 preamps, one has to be dialed down, I get your point, however, 1. you can just turn off the SansAmp altogether; 2. it seems to me the tone is nice either way. the RK5 straight into a board isn't my thing. look up my other FR5 videos, particularly with my band B11. I go with the FR5, it fits better my style. thanks for watching.

Damnit these things are a sweet compressor away from being everything I need in one tidy package. Why did we leave that out, guys ? nuX dropped the exact same ball on the Cerberus...

I think one of the new signature fly rigs has a compressor now

Do these not have a balanced DI output for PA? I found that strange since I thought going direct into PA was the point.

No problem, it has a cab sim built in with a Lo Z output. Just get a XLR adapter or cheap DI box to convert it to balanced if you need the XLR input on your mixer

Hi Boyan! Which one do you think would suit better for Mayer type blues but with the ability to crank the gain up for 90s style rock stuff? (Good bit of gain sometimes but nothing crazy). I am looking for that rich overdriven rock tone but without too much saturation) I use a Strat into a deluxe reverb.

PS. Is the boosted mids in the RK5 something not easily compensated with on the FR5?. The mid Boost has me leaning towards the RK5 even though there's more gain then I'll ever need

I'd have thought you'd get better results by not using the Sansamp portion when going into the front of an amp. I thought the whole idea was, you use the Sansamp portion as a base (modeled on a Fender type tone) for if you are going direct or want to modify your amps tone to sound more like a Fender. Just seems a bit odd to emulate the Fender amp part when you're running it into a Fender amp anyway.

You're absolutely right. in practice it works fine either way. win-win.
