Yo, I went to high school in the same town as that popeye's story, it happened in Edgewood, Maryland. Hell, one of the people I graduated with recently got arrested for a reverse bank-robbery. The Fire brigade and emergency services specifically told the residents to stay put, even the ones that could get out. The statement was regarding disobeying the order to stay put. It was still wrong to question common sense of residents, but there were residents with the choice to evacuate who were advised to shelter in place.

Heat dissipates slower the more volume of the solid that contains the heat. If I remember correctly it’s a ratio of like x^3, meaning the heat dissipates x^3 slower where x Is volume. I’m much lesser sure about the number itself but the concept I know is correct, it’s the principle behind why earth has a still molten core but mars does not.
