This guy for sure is one of the very best tenor saxophone players ever. I played tenor for many years and tried as hard as I could to get to a sound like this. At times I got fairly close but never actually made it. I love to listen to this guy and his wonderful group.

in my old age i only listen to two sax players these days .the great Larry McKenna and Scott Hamilton . They tell me what i want to hear ! i mean listen to this guy . No meaningless fast shuckin and jiven very fast runs. what a guy that LARRY !!!!!

In my old age I listen to all of the great tenor's but I only try to imitate players like Larry and Scott. Your comment got my attention because just this morning I was thinking that I ought to see what players my age are up to and copy them.

@@davidcox8961 i'm actually at age 83 a long time jazz guitarist . that's how i made my living . But i don't listen to guitarist because we don't know how to breath and phrase like Larry and Scott . You can always hear the melody in their improves . they really swing and it's like they are singing . And most important , they seem like nice guys that play because they love music , and not to gain attention . I mean they also need to eat . But they love what they do . How cool is that ? and they ain't young !
@freddym2232 жыл бұрын
@@jacquesdeghorain3162 I see no resemblance to Lester young or Stan Getz in Larry's playing . He is his own man . I prefer Larry and Scott to any other sax players . But that's just me . We all have different heroes . But i do also Love Lester Young and Stan Getz . They are great players and it helps them because of their recordings and concerts , allowing world wide recognition . but lets not forget the wonderful musicians that do not want to fly all over the world who are wonderful musicians . peace .

@@freddym223 I came into the world ten years after you did. I share your opinion about Scott and Larry. I'm what some call a late bloomer. I've always messes around with music but for the past three years I've actually been studying. I play flute and tenor sax. I strive to spend all my waking hours with music. I spend way too much playing along with people like these guys. I've been told that it's great to have fun just blowing but 50% or more ought to be working on foundational stuff. I trying to follow Sonny Rollins' advice. He just loves to practice, he says. He said his horn is like his favorite toy that he never got tired of. I feel that way too. Cheers Freddy !!

I love this guy, the simplicity of Gene Ammons and the fluidity of Sonny Stitt. He never overplays his solos. A true be-bopper with tasteful phrasings who isn't "A Stranger in Paradise".

I first discovered Larry about 3 years ago. And I am a lifelong jazz lover seriously into the art form since at least the mid- 60's! When my friend and Philly based tenor player John Simon told me about Larry I checked him out on KZbin and I was SHOCKED! How is it possible I never heard this guy???!!! It was as if I had been into jazz for 50 years and never heard Dexter Gordon. I have been aware that there are a large number of "local legends" in the jazz world that don't achieve the fame that their talent qualifies them for. As I understand it, that's a personal decision for these artists based on the lifestyle they choose. There's Charles Thomas in Memphis, and as I understand Von Freeman would have remained known mostly in Chicago except for the notoriety of his son Chico drawing extra attention to Von. Well, if fame and fortune is the primary motivator, let's face it, a lot of artists wouldn't choose to concentrate on jazz in the first place. I'm so grateful for all of the jazz warriors and very much for the local legends who work in relative obscurity, and I sure am glad I discovered Larry McKenna better late than never. What a great player. One of the best ever ❤!
