There is a rumor that Suga is secretly fluent in English but he keeps quiet cuz he sees what RM goes through.
@HadassaMoon14410 ай бұрын
Suga seems to understand most English, especially when he's tuned in and the speaker isn't too fast or using lots of slang. But his speech is very basic. He can't express himself the way he seems to want to in English and gets so shy. It's funny how he used to almost whisper his responses but they were always grammatically correct.

It is quite noticeable in interviews that Suga and Jungkook understand English quite a bit because they even react before the translator does his job, I think it is more the fact that they do not like or draw attention to speaking in English in interviews haha

I wouldn’t call it fluency cause fluency is something you can achieve through practice, fully speaking and engaging and at some level you’ll be thinking in the language, at the least mixing the two languages coherently to replace words you don’t know, there’s 4 stages of fluency, Listening Understanding Reading and Writing, and they are not necessarily related to each other, they all prolly have some basic level on all 4 but if they don’t commit full time in using the language at all/half of the stages they won’t be fluent, going to a class makes you understand the idea and concept of the language the rules and how it works but not using or speaking it at all, esp not if it’s a few hours of class and some movies in the language with subtitles and 95% you engage in your own language only, like I know how Mandarin is supposed to be how it’s pronounced the way the grammar structure is but I can’t speak any Mandarin or understand at all I can read Korean perfectly but I don’t know what I’m reading at all but I can pick up more on basic sentences and random words I recognise to put two and two together which doesn’t really work, they probably know travel communication and if they grew up watching/hearing English content they prolly can understand it but speaking and processing it in the way you want to communicate is a whole different game esp when you can’t think in the language, they do recognise a lot of words but words don’t equal context they know the meaning behind the words cause I’ve seen JK before learning a list of vocabularies but in real time speech focusing behind word meanings would take a while to translate it into a sentence, also even if it is your mother tongue smt if you stop engaging in it long enough you actually forget or become harder to start speaking again, so to expect people foreign to the language to be good in a language they don’t put as much effort to is even harder cause they don’t have as much memories attached to it, my mum learned English in elementary school taught fully in English medium at an older age so it took her a few years to get fluent in English but it’s not her dominant language because she didn’t engage in English outside school, so no matter how fluent at reading writing and understanding it all, she still struggles to speak she would prefer writing and she does really well at writing and poetry but she will avoid speaking at all costs and get embarrassed for mistakes or turn to me to translate better to make sure she’s got it right but if she was alone with me she’ll speak completely fine basic conversations in English so I feel like people underestimate how much thinking in a language helps with actually communicating and also even if you’re fluent you can’t talk in a language you don’t talk in cause if you don’t practise it how else would your brain recognise how speech is supposed to flow. Well BTS is a music group so music can help but they still have to put effort to have a way where their brain make scenarios and speech in English and sing the words like they know the story behind every word or try writing songs in English even if it’s bad at the start not to necessarily release but for private, for us to ever hear them speaking in English, which would be hard cause their work consists of several multi tasks and effort to write songs in the language they process best and that can take ages as it is with artist blocks and all and they only really interact with international people during work with translators which is necessary at the time instead of having a hard time figuring out just to learn a language when work is priority, so I don’t think with the way they work it’ll ever be possible to see English speaking BTS, anyways I’m actually very fascinated and passionate about languages and speech evolutions so it’s something that I love looking into and whenever I see people talk about people that seem to understand but never speak they are usually either monolingual or learnt other languages at a very young age so they don’t really understand how learning languages actually work and it’s a whole cool brain process So I tend to go off a little- 😬 I have a thing for writing essays can’t help myself idk how to not write in detail- it gives the full picture of what I’m trying to communicate-

I kinda understand Namjoon, being fluent in another language and being a translator are two very different things. In the middle of promotions and for 10 years having the mental exhaustion of trying to explain the thoughts of other people it can become quite exhausting and you tend to simplify. I'm not fluent in English at all but I think I have an okay level of communication, being self-taught in a language I don't come into contact with daily. But sometimes, just putting my thoughts in order in a language that isn't mine is exhausting , and it gets worse when I have to do it with other people I heard that Jhope and Jungkook in particular are dedicating themselves more to learning English to help Namjoon, I think that in future promotions this will become much more evident

It puts a lot of pressure on rm during English interviews, hes talked about it in their 10 year record book "beyond the story" and he said that he couldn't always find the words because english isnt his first language it was really hard for him. When he had to do their first interview in english when they first went to the AMAS and they had to do 11 different interviews in one hour with every person having a different accent and thats when he realized they were in trouble and theres no turning back now. It scared him so much. The other members beat themselves up about not knowing english and not being able to communicate properly during these interviews and they felt terrible that rm had to do all of it. They studied and are still studying english but it is not easy considering that english is one of the hardest languages to learn. J hope said he felt like "why is this all im capable" when he would get things wrong during english lessons. 2018 was a bad year for them and i feel so bad that they had to go through all that pressure to the point that they considered disbanding. Im glad they are much better now and im just excited for them to be released from the military and we can see their amazing growth. I hope all the best for them through everything they do 💜

RM knows how to translate from Korean to English perfectly, but he probably had major fatigue from their crazy tour schedule and promotions. It's exhausting to translate from one language to another. I found at first, when I spent a summer in Denmark, that I'd translate the Danish joke into English in my head. I'd want to contribute to the conversation, only to find that everyone had moved onto a new subject. How much more exhausting when you're translating for 6 other members. I like how he shortened his answers and that the members knew it and they could laugh about it. I know they holdbRM in the highest regard. They appreciate him as a their best leader.

Poor RM, I thought he was kind of joking when he was sarcastic about having to translate, but I can see from this video how frustrated he must have been. I know those other guys, or many of them, can understand English, and speak it, but they just don't because they think it will sound funny with their Korean accent, or they are afraid of getting it wrong. I understand that because my parents mother tongue is different from English but English is my first language, so around family etc. I feel funny trying to speak their native language because I will speak with an American accent and they will laugh!
@КяКалико10 ай бұрын
RM actually amazing translator and there way more clips of him doing it perfectly. I guess with time he stopped caring about it because most of the time people don't prepare for interviews well and just ask them the same questions over and over. What very important most of this clips from their first promotion in America during 2016- 2017 . When BTS didn't even expect to get there. Now their English skills so much better. They all understand it and good at it for sure. Translator usually hired by people, channel, journalist who takes their interview. But they almost never do it. They have pretty limited time with BTS , but translator can take few precious minutes away, bring delay in conversation. And i don't think idols company would want to hire the translator, because they got to practice this way and genuinely get better. Public goes crazy over their faves saying few words in their language,even in clumsy way . I'm curious did you know that real idols who already debuted get English and Japanese mandatory lessons provided by company? They learning well, but don't have time to do it regularly. So usually its very small amount of lessons. Now Hybe doesn't have that much say in what BTS need to do. And members from time to time do online lessons on their own to have better communication with fans.

BTS exploded in the US in 2017 and suddenly they got all these english interviews, so RM’ had to translate way more than usual. The thing is, it’s harder for him because he has to listen to translate but he is also in leader-thinking mode, so he has to understand the question and interpret the answers to translate, but to do it properly on the spot that doesn’t create confusion? That’s hella hard. The interviews are all day where radio/media will take turns talking to BTS, RM said he thought he would get questions ahead of time so he could like write it down or prepare. But found out the interviews want to do a live interview on the spot, so he had no choice but to translate and I’m sure he was nervous with this task to represent the team but in a way represent Korea. Poor namjoon

As someone who translates a lot for work, I can attest that YES, translating is a SKILL and it is not something anyone can do just because they know more than one language. I think considering the circumstances RM does great. When I translate in meetings and stuff I have to write while people are talking so I don't forget what they say etc, hit all the major points, etc. and it is ESPECIALLY annoying and DIFFICULT, when people don't answer someones question directly (because they don't know the answer, basically they'll give a politician answer) and then its like "okay bro I still have to translate what you said and they're gonna wonder why they're getting an irrelevant answer to the question they asked..." If that happens sometimes you gotta explain like, "look I asked but they just aren't giving me the answer." Anyways, like yea, especially because BTS doesn't always give relevant answers (not upset by this I love all their chaos), and because there is just a lot in one go to try and translate (how can he remember all that, ya know?) it is probably very difficult for Namjoon to have to try and translate all the things they say on the spot. He does an amazing job imo.

As hilarious as it is to see Namjoon fed up I also get it, just because you can speak multiple languages doesn't mean you can correctly/easily translate them, and alot of people see someone who speaks more then one language, assume that means they are a walking Google translate 😂. Theres more to translating and being completely fluent then just understanding the definition of a word, or phrase; like cultural and even regional context or slang. As well as how much vocabulary you have acess to, and individual intent and tone. Thats alot to think about and understand while also trying to find the words that more closely resemble each other in two different languages to fully get across whats being said and expressed. My dad, alot like Namjoon, taught himself english growing up from watching American television, hes comfortable enough expressing himself speechwise, but to this day, ( and hes been a citizen here for over 30 years,) he still struggles with some vocabulary, and reading and writing in english. There are times I still have to help him, or vice versa when I need help understanding something in his native language, he can't directly translate it for me, so it becomes a back and forth of explaing and comparing cultural context and intention rather then specifically word for word lol.
