I was born and grew up in Belfast less than a mile from where Titanic was built. My not so distant ancestors built the Titanic/Olympic as my family worked in the ship yards back then. I am so proud of our ship building heritage and as a child I would stare out my window at Belfast Lough and imagine what Titanic must of looked like as she sailed down the lough! This ship has a special place in my heart and I feel a deep connection with the tragedy.

Nice to see that you got Titanic's A-Deck and B-Deck configurations at the time correct-because keep in mind, they were still identical to that of Olympic at the time of launch, and the changes weren't made until later.

I found these stats here quite interesting : Col Gracie was the first adult survivor to die (December 4 1912), Reginald Lee was the first crew member to die (August 6 1913), Joseph Boxhall was the last officer to die (April 25 1967), Sidney Edward Daniels was the last crew member to die (May 25 1983), and Michel Navratil was the last male survivor to die (January 30 2001). Then, Millvina Dean the very last survivor passed away on May 31 2009 the 98th anniversary of the Titanic's launch

3 things about Titanic's launch 1) the original film of the ship's launch has been lost for decades. No one knows what happened to it. They don't know if the film was deliberately destroyed after the accident or if it was lost in a later event. The IRA did bomb a section of H&W in the 1970s and destroyed a cache of materials that may have included the launch film; the launch films for both Olympic and Britannic still exist 2) Titanic's forward A-deck did not have the window enclosure installed until AFTER the ship went to the fitting docks. I'm glad to see the model recreation takes this reality into account. In the only existing motion picture footage of the ship, it still doesn't have this distinguishing modification that clearly set it apart from the Olympic. You can clearly read the ship's name on the forward part of the hull if you look closely. It's in a dark grey shade (that's how gold paint appears in B&W) but it's legible even on 480p video copies of the film. There was a docum-drama made years ago, close to the centennial of disaster, called "Titanic: Birth of a Legend." It was an excellent film about the men who built the ship and the guarantee company but they made a visual effects mistake with the model. The launch of Titanic was recreated for that film BUT they made the mistake of modeling Titanic's hull at launch with the forward A-deck window enclosure in place. 3) There was yet another special made about Titanic where they recreated the launch of the ship. This was done by taking stills of the actual launch -- those are the only authentic images left from the event -- and creating CG animation from them. This was part of a special about the sinking that hypothesized a fire in a forward coal bunker weakened a part of the hull and made the ship sink faster. That theory has been widely discounted since but the CG recreation of the launch was interesting to look considering how it was created.

Here's why the Titanic's story will never die: (1) she was the largest movable man-made object of her day, (2) she excelled in luxury appointments, (3) it was her maiden voyage (of all voyages), (4) there were many celebrities of the day on board, (5) there was already a lot of talk about all her features before she was ever launched (including her "unsinkability"), and (6) the Titanic was the first ship in living memory to be sunk by an iceberg. Unlike the ship itself, the story is unsinkable

It was a freezing, yet clear night, many years ago, in the North Atlantic, nothing in view, just endless water, and some ice. But suddenly, a bell rang out, and a massive shadow steamed by. Words on the side of the ship showed through the night sky, it read “TITANIC”. The ship cut through the starry sky, and scraped the side of the ice. After two hours, there was nothing in place massive vessel but a small wake where she sank, and that two only lasted a few minutes. And that leaves her, lonely on the bottom of the Atlantic, two miles down, still intact, with the spirits of many aboard, music plays out, “the wedding dance waltz” and the ghosts stroll her endless decks, never to reach New York.

A quite interesting story I've heard about Ismay is that around the time "A Night to Remember" was released in November 1955 Walter Lord got a letter from someone in England about the remarkable finish at the 1913 Derby in Epsom Downs. Craganour, the favourite, crossed the line first and was escorted to the winners' circle. Then, without a protest from anyone, it was placed second to Aboyeur. Craganour, Lord's correspondent said, was owned by Bruce Ismay, and I guess it doesn't really need saying that the horse racing establishment would never let his horse win the hallowed Derby after what happened. Walter Lord then went to check the story. Everything turned out to be accurate except for one important detail. Joseph Bruce Ismay didn't own Craganour. His brother, Charles Bower Ismay, did. Still, Craganour remained placed second to Aboyeur. The reason? Craganour's original jockey had been replaced by an American one, Johnny Reiff. I don't know why that was but the move was regarded as immensely unpopular, and at the end of the race during discussions the judges had a golden opportunity to discredit Reiff. Walter Lord, though, said that he still got letters afterwards, still linking Bruce Ismay and Craganour together

It’s ironic, we’re it not for the tragedy, Titanic likely would have been the forgotten middle sister. Olympic was first and indeed was a war hero, and Britannic was to have been even grander and more opulent than her older sisters.

9:01 Carlisle was the one who vigorously advocated and campaigned for more lifeboats on White Star's new superliners but was defeated in the end and that was I hear because shipyards didn't have the same political weight as shipowners. Walter Lord says he attended this meeting and was even made to sign a set of recommendations that reduced the number of lifeboats even further. In Walter Lord's words, "The roaring lion, so accustomed to getting his way on the shipyard, turned into a pussycat when it came to dealing with the client." (I think he was eventually tired of fighting the system.) Carlisle attended one of the memorials shortly after the disaster and was unable to stay until the end; at one point he broke in tears and collapsed on his seat. He had to be rushed to the hospital and had to be driven home after

Great documentary! It's like watching a History channel documentaries with better research and visualization. However there is something I need to ask whether the 3D models doesn't have a portholes or it's just the way it is? Also can you add metric for your future release for non-American? You can add it after imperials measurements or metric then Imperials, both are acceptable. Other than that, great videos!
@TitanicAnimations
@TitanicAnimations 5 жыл бұрын
I'll try and include the metric idea in the future. This model is very old (made in 2009) and it didn't include shell plating or portholes. Including them is possible but it would have delayed the video, even more, having already been delayed from February to May.

Some Questions I have: 1: Did titanic have internal walls at launch? 2: I do know she had open windowless portholes on the hull yet why did they not put window holes on the superstructure? 3: Why did she have 3 (6 total) large smoke pipes on each of her well decks? I heard they were used for temporary boilers but what would be there purpose? Why didn’t Olympic have those large well deck pipes at her launch? 4: Why did they have random things like fenders hanging from the promenade and open deck railings?
@gokulgopan4397
@gokulgopan4397 Жыл бұрын
1. Basically she was just a shell during launch. The hull, superstructure and the framework. All others like walls were added during fitting out. 2. Superstructure had windows. What do u mean to say? All the portholes have windows. 3. She had 4 funnels, 3 take smoke from boilers and last one was for ventilation. Her well decks had a pair of electric cargo cranes each, no smoke stacks. 4. What do u mean by those fenders hanging? If it's the steel triangular structure loading from A deck promenade, located just below the windows, they are called coal outriggers. They are used to hang coal buckets during coal loading.

I know that the Olympic and Titanic were bigger than the Lusitania and Mauretania (not by much), but O&T I feel are often over exaggerated in terms of their revolutionary qualities. The only thing they were more revolutionary with over the L&M was the amount of amenities on board, which truthfully was impressive. But they weren’t that much bigger or luxurious to denote them to be considered “revolutionary” in those categories. Lusitania and Mauretania, however, truly were revolutionary. They were the first ocean liners to be dubbed “super liners”, their interiors were basically the templates for all of the other super liners of the 20th century, especially the Cunarders, they were the first british four-stackers, their technology was much more high-tech, and their graceful shape and speed were unmatched. Don’t get me wrong, the Olympic Class was impressive in there self too. But they were more like a step up, not a jump. When the Titanic sank, other companies were already working on larger ships which would be more luxurious than all 4 of them.
@davinp
@davinp 5 жыл бұрын
Titanic was not designed to be the fastest ship, but the most luxurious ship. She was the largest ship at the time. However, the RMS Titanic's interior was the same as previous ships. They did not come up with a new design and used old designs for the interior

The pronunciation of the word in question was taken from a Titanic Channel episode where Mark Chirnside referred to it by that name. I was simply going off his pronunciation of it. I don't like to be the one to be pretentious enough to try and tell a world class historian how to and how not to pronounce a word. So I thought it best to defer to his judgement on how to speak such a word.

As I know, Ismay wanted not 2, but 3 new ships from the Olympic class. They were meant as "Wednesday" ships. Ismay wanted to have an Olympic class ship EACH Wednesday in the BOTH directions, from Southampton and from New York. And since each crossing was nearly a week long, 2 ships were simply not enough for this task. That's why Ismay ordered 3 ships: the Olympic, the Titanic, and a third ship who was about to be named Gigantic, but was named the Britannic. The problem was that the shipbuilder couldn't build them all together, they were the biggest ships in the world at that time. So Harland & Wolff started to build the first 2, with the intention to build the third one later. When the building of the third ship started, the Cunard Line realized that they made a mistake to build only 2 ships, the Lusitania and the Mauritania. So Cunard also ordered a third ship, this time with the dimensions of the Olympic, and that ship later was called the Aquitania. But before the completion of the third ships, suddenly the second ship of the White Star Line, the RMS Titanic sank. And this changed the whole story. When the third ships (the Britannic and the Aquitania) were ready, the second world war started. And in that war were lost the Lusitania and the Britannic. So the both companies never actually had their 3 ships...

If someone could come up with a way to incorporate various school studies, like these amazing videos, perhaps it would garner the attention of more school children as compared to the dry, mundane, way class rooms are presently conducted.maybe because it is so much easier to watch a video, than it is to crack open a book, and put forth the effort to gain some knowledge. Ask any high school age person about the movie TITANIC, and they will rattle off (movie) facts, to no end. lol..... But ask that same student basic questions about Math, Social Studies, Science, or English even, and they will stare at you as if you had a 3rd eyeball in the middle of your forehead. I have to admit, Titanic is an amazing story. From its beginning, to its tragic end, it will hold the attention of most people, both young, and old, like few other topics can.

Wait so Thomas Andrews didn’t actually design the ships?
@TitanicAnimations
@TitanicAnimations 5 жыл бұрын
Not as much as is popularly attributed to him. Pirrie and Carlisle did the main work, Andrews was brought on only after Carlisle's retirement. This isn't to say that Andrews did nothing, but to call him the sole designer and creator of the ships (as many do) would be untrue.

Andrews was head of the design department from 1906 onwards and took over as head designer of Olympic and Titanic after Alexander Carlisle left. He is immortalised mainly because he died during the sinking, choosing to go down with his own creation rather than trying to save himself.

Fantasic! I think, a true complete story of the men who built Titanic, has yet to have been told. Although there are a few things out there. there is yet to have been an account of the Titanic story from an Irish perspective, done with the same attention to datil as say, the '97 James Cameron Film. Hopefully, if they ever do tell it. Leave the 'hollywood' bits out of it.

I wonder why the Olympic-class ships were launched without their propellors attached? Most ships were launched with their propellors already mounted.

Nicholas Maude -yes Harland & Wolff tended to launch ships with engines boilers propellers etc installed and a lot of the interior so that fitting out after launch took minimal time .

His pronunciation of Cunard is revolting though lol. It’s pronounced like “cue” or “Q” so “Q-nard”. Not Kuhnard lol

Of all three ships in White Star's superliner trio the Olympic was the one that got most of the attention; she was the first one finished so she sailed first. By the time the Titanic cast off, it was all old news.

@TitanicAnimations

Correct, it was an empty shell at its launch. The ship was guided down the river to its fitting out basin by a flotilla of tugboats.

@@TitanicAnimations well that is surprising as Harland & Wolff were known to launch ships in a much greater state of completion than other ship builders to save costs when fitting out The other large Belfast shipyard Workman Clark were more traditional in their building practices ..
