I love when a vocal coach listens to something a singer does and replies *after trying to replicate the run* with "Not really. That needs a lot of work. Ha-ha." She's an absolutely RIDICULOUS vocalist. The emotional impact of this song is so incredibly powerful. I'm reduced to tears every time I watch her during this performance. It obviously means so much to her and she is quite obviously on the verge of tears through the entire performance. This performance alone could be a masterclass.

I thought it was funny when you said "it's like she has a PhD, this song is a phd" She went to one of the most prestigious music colleges in the United States for 4 years. Belmont school for music in Nashville, Tennessee. We grew up in the same town and even used to make her sing at parties back in high school. Always knew she was going to be big after school! Abbey is the best!

Growing up on gospel music, I've heard a lot of those longer runs often. They're quite common, but to hear it from someone so young... It really shows her gospel background and the control she has is chilling.

Errick Jackson Gospel runs are a dime a dozen and kinda old but this? Pure emotion. One vocalist one guitar. 2 mics. No auto tune, overdubbed, multi looped, drum machine driven cacophony of crap that is presented as a stage show disguised as music! This is the REAL DEAL Reminds me of the purity of music during the 50s, 60's and 70s. I could listen to this on a loop just like 8 tracks back in the day. Peace,, love and hope.

Loving your reaction! I know it's 6 years after your reaction/analysis but, for me, her song is so powerful because the techniques she's picked up along the way are supporting the song. The story and emotions are the main focus here.
@ragtop63 Жыл бұрын
The note she didn't hit at 6:34 wasn't a mistake. She hits that same note (and higher) in other parts of the song. The way she let it squeak out was intentional because she's not singing a song, she's telling a story. Every technique she used in this performance had a purpose, to make the audience feel. That's also why it's just her and a guitarist. No distractions. Just pure emotion.
@ChrisPhoenixMusic5 жыл бұрын
She has such control over her voice that she is trusting it to hold up while she puts as much feeling into it as she likes. That's what a master sounds like, right there. She's mastered her voice.

bro gonna have to disagree with you on one point - don't think the gravel is "unintentional" per se because she has clear notes as well, I think it's "unintentional" in a sense that she doesn't know if the voice will gravel at a certain stage but I will say I think there is some degree of control in that she know at what stage her voice will reach that gravel to add to the emotion :)

Wondering if you are ever going to figure out the woman is torn to shreds emotionally. She's not trying to push her voice to the edge, she's trying not to lose her sanity and begin screaming and crying. Listen to her emotions and quit trying to hit runs you obviously can't. People are watching reactions to Yerba singing My Mind to see what others emotional reaction might be. Nope you never got the point. Her voice is tired? She's emotionally destroyed. Watch her! She's damn near sobbing dude.

A great song sung by an extraordinary artist. You seem knowledgeable in listening and capable of emulating soulful sounds. I cannot fathom why you would record a reaction video in a loud outdoor area. While you get the benefit of headphones, those of us trying to listen and stay with your analysis are subjected to screaming children, motorcycles, third party conversations the content of which we can clearly hear and the birds! All of this done on an open microphone mixed with equal volume to the original source. Doesn't this strike you as rude to the performer, your subscribers and most of all, those who recommended Abbey to you? I believe I could handle your excessive pause/rewinds and even your need to show your own riff skills. But the environment you choose as your sound stage is not worthy of the artists you come to critique. Your sound stage is not worthy of your own skill.

She didn't need to "clear" her throat. Comparing her to Christina Aguilera's ugly intentional Tony the Tiger growls is utterly disrespectful to Yebba's natural gift. Whether intentional or not, that "gravel" is a quality of her voice that she's grown comfortable with enough to just let happen, and I'm glad she did because that gravel was needed to convey the message. The issue with soulless, trained "vocalists" is that you always try to reason when you just need to "feel". Who told you that rasp, which you call gravel, was a bad thing that needed to be corrected? It can be depending on the singer, but not for her. You missed alot in this video because you kept trying to stop and mimick, which I understand. As a singer, we hear something pleasing to the ear and want to try it. But you also have to know when to just take it all in. I'm sure you're great at what YOU do, which isn't what she does. I'm glad you enjoyed it. However, I wish that everyone would know their lanes and be comfortable in it. All of the levels of your voice are clear. Hers isn't. She doesn't need to clear her throat.
