Outside of Japan, this is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II. Which one is cool but does machines and which one is leads party dudes? Famidaily is my attempt to catalog all of the commercially released Famicom games.

I loved this game as a kid, and yes I was well familiar with that cheat code. What can I say, I was at exactly the right age to have been swept up in turtle mania.

People moan about the graphical downgrade, but the NES/Famicom version is really good and honestly better than the quarter-sucking arcade game. I'm glad you mentioned all the small touches and tiny animations added to the game. That's part of what made Konami beat-em-ups so memorable for me, and Konami did an excellent job bringing over those elements to the 8-bit system. They really take full advantage of that 4-megabit size. I'm not a fan of the arcade beat-em-ups either, but The Simpsons is one of my all-time favorites. Unfortunately, licensing issues meant Konami couldn't release a NES/Famicom version of that game, and seeing the level of detail they put into this tells me we really missed out on something great. Damn you, Acclaim, your games were so half-assed!! For anyone who still had a C64 in the 90s there was always an excellent conversion for that computer that does the same thing TMNT: The Arcade Game does for the NES/Fami. It keeps all the characters and little extra animations in the game.

AFAIK, the enemies from the first game don't come from the comics (outside Shredder, Mousers, and Foot ninjas, which were also in the show and toyline).

I'd suggest that the late-era Konami arcade beat em ups (particularly the ones not based on existing IPs) are the best ones. Also, I can only imagine what it'd be like to be a kid in Japan at the time, seeing the show first being aired and going "This is just like Gekikame Ninja Den!" I suppose it's their equivalent of Dragon Power 😉

As much as I love this version, I still consider the arcade version to be the superior version regarding the gameplay: in this version if you hit a foot soldier he will have some moments of invincibility which makes impossible to do something as simple as hitting two times continuously aka a mini chain combo. That alone makes this version the worst and Konami did fix it with the sequel Manhattan project. In other on this one you are always force to attack using the jump kicks or the specials, or you’ll get hit if you do a standard attack on the foot soldier and don’t retreat.

Really like this one, personally, though TMNT III is my favourite of the bunch. I have fond memories of playing this game back in the 90s; certainly one of the better beat 'em ups on the Famicom/NES. : ) Too bad there wasn't a battle royale game with all the TMNT copies/rip-offs, like Battletoads, Stone Protectors, Mighty Ducks, Street Sharks etc.

5:16 More like they reduced the difficulty for the Japanese version, given this was an NES game made for the U.S. market.

Loved the game, especially after the first (which my friend and I pretended to like, I think). I think this was around the time I stopped being an arcade fanboy and would admit there were some ports I liked better than the arcade original.

i think the video title's incomplete on this upload. should it say "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II" after the slash?

So what's the best beat'em up series on Famicom? Is it TMNT or Kunio-kun?
@RndStranger2 жыл бұрын
Kunio is the one that's basically a modern action game rendered in 8-bit.

@@RndStranger Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari is basically Ryu Ga Gotoku before Ryu Ga Gotoku existed. They both even have a Jidaigeki spinoff.

I was never super fond of the original (even revisiting it now via digital eclipse's new collection it just didn't click for me) but the port of the arcade game, was definitely one of my faves of the TMNT games. it's still super tough though! although I haven't tried to run the Japanese version yet... but I might try it! their home ports definitely felt more polished than the janky arcade versions, that's for sure.

@@stirlock yeah same! I found his channel randomly (no pun intended) and was blown away by this project! after binging for a good month or two and catching up, I found a bunch of famicom stuff I had never heard of that sounded neat.

@@darktetsuya same actually. It just came up in my recommended feed about a week and a half ago. Still working my way through. But this is seriously awesome! Wish someone would do this kind of a project for the SNES

Best of a bad bunch...well that's...certainly a take. A bad one, mind, but a take none the less.
