This is what saving lives at sea looks like. When an emergency distress signal was received by the Coastguard, the Fraserburgh crew didn't hesitate, launching into huge seas and gale-force winds on the 51st anniversary of the 1970 lifeboat disaster.
After a three-hour search, a false alarm was declared and the crew returned through the gloom to the safety of the harbour where they paid their respects at the memorial to the five crew lost on 21 January 1970.
Many thanks to RNLI Fraserburgh Lifeboat volunteer press officer Billy Watson for the amazing footage.

The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea. 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, lifeboat crews around the UK and Ireland are ready to launch to help those in need. Whether you're stuck on a sinking ship, cut off by a rapidly rising tide, or in the water and close to drowning, RNLI crew members will drop everything to come to your rescue. 95% of RNLI lifeboat crews and station staff are volunteers.
But it’s not just lifeboats. RNLI lifeguards patrol 248 beaches across the UK and Channel Islands, keeping people safe, providing safety advice and rescuing those in trouble. Education volunteers visit schools and swimming clubs to help teach the next generation how to enjoy the water safely. And volunteer fundraisers and shop workers give up their time to generate vital funds. The RNLI is also working to help communities around the world that are most at risk of drowning.
If you spot someone in trouble in the water, call 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard.

Hero’s don’t just wear capes and NHS uniforms....... they also wear big yellow rubber boots and when most vessels are seeking refuge these brave souls are preparing to go out and face whatever mother nature throws at them and that is the most terrifying force you will ever encounter............calm seas and fair winds to you all. ⚓️🛥🚢

They're getting rid of the Trent class lifeboat, it's being replaced with the smaller lighter shannon class. More's the pity. Much prefer the Trent ,a much more capable boat in those sorts of conditions.

And then there is Priti Patel... ffs. Huge respect to the RNLI and its volunteers and workforce. Huge respect to nature too - those waves, that wind... and the birds still out at sea. Amazing.

There you are, you see? This is another of the many jobs I couldn't do for 'personality' reasons. Selfless sacrifice and risk-taking in safety-critical situations? I've got no problems with that. I'm not a coward, and have even done a (little) bit of rescue work myself. But the problem with working as a fireman or a copper or an A&E doctor or a mountain rescue guy - or for the great RNLI - is that you're often dealing with complete wallies. Drunks and tools and twits and fools who should have known better than to drink 17 pints and drive home, or put to sea on a rubber duck in a storm because it'd be a bit of a laugh on their KZbin channel, or go biking on Ben Nevis in winter wearing tennis shoes and a T-shirt. No, I couldn't do a job like that. But I've got nothing but respect for the people who ARE prepared to risk everything for strangers.
