So the Montezuma was built in 1871 and scrapped in 1888. The Stroudley A1 terriers were built in 1872 (to 1880) and there are still 10 of those in preservation of the 50 that were built. One of which, Fenchurch, is currently undergoing an overhaul at the Bluebell railway for it's 150th 'birthday', which was september 1872. The wiki for the A1s has a list of preserved locos and when their boiler tickets next expire. The A1s have a tractive effort of 7650lbf, and the A1Xs have a tractive effort of 10,695lbf. granted they are standard gauge, but i thought it was interesing how they were built at roughly the same time as the Montezuma Edit: I named my class 48 the 'A1' and my Glenbrook 'Stroudley'

Fun thing is with the development of steam engines, is some of the science behind them goes back to Greek/roman times, such as with the Aeolipile in 100CE which was a rudimentary steam turbine, which was the first steam engine (though it really could not power much). As for unloading, it is harder to unload when moving as the zone to trigger unloading is really small and super easy to miss. Then you often cancel it because it doesn't start right away too 😛
@VestedUTuber Жыл бұрын
They had the basics down back then, anyway. Unfortunately they didn't have the metallurgy to take advantage of those basics and thus couldn't really take advantage of it. The most they'd be able to do with bronze is small benchtop tools had they actually adopted steam tech, steel was needed for anything bigger than that. But who knows, maybe they would have discovered steel a lot earlier if they had gone down that route?
@RoTi1224 Жыл бұрын
After one more train like this you should be able to afford the Climax which might be able to tackle the steep grade up to the mine and pull a good amount of cars. It has low top-speed so it could stay at the helper station at the base of the Iron Mine while the Montezuma can ferry cars to/from the helper station.

I remember from my classes: The amount of energy that is needed to warm up 1kg of water by 1°C is 4184 joules. We were thought that that was one of (if not) the highest of all stuff. Basically for all materials they said if you pick a constant set weight and constant set temprature difference, you will need to spend the most energy on heating the water. Same goes for cooling down. So you might need a lot of energy to warm up the water in the engine, but once it is on that temprature, and the source of energy stops giving said energy, the water wil also take very long to cool down. (Also things like temprature difference between the water and its invirement and the spefifications and materials of insulation, etc are factors.)

In my current playthrough, I originally had a 1% grade from the logging camp all the way down to the lumber mill, but I neglected to save and the game crashed. So, now my route isn't as perfect and reaches the ground just before the mill. My current route to the smelter I'm attempting is a L O N G 0.5% grade loop. So far I've gone 2.5 times around the smelter and am hoping to link up at the end of the next time around. I also chose to skip buying the 'Zooma and went for the 0-6-0 tank engine. Aluminium is used as a heat sink because it is cheap, light weight, and has a high thermally conductivity (and it typically wont cause corrosion of other components). But for really good heat sinks, you want them made of copper due to the higher thermal conductivity, or if you have no limit in terms of resources, use diamond. Heat capacity isn't a big factor because the idea is to transfer the heat away. However this only works if you are going to cool something which is above ambient. If you are trying to cool something that is below ambient temperature, then you need something even colder with a large heat capacity, preferably something which has to undergo a phase change, like solid water. But in general, if you care about making sure it stays cool while operating, especially if it may have spikes in heat output while operating, a large thermal mass heat sink can be good as it can absorb heat directly rather than needing to transfer it away. However if you want it to cool really quickly after you stop operating, then you want a low thermal mass so it wont retain heat which needs to escape. This is also represented with some nuclear reactor designs, where with some designs there is so much water there, the thermal mass of the water will prevent a meltdown if the reactor is shut down (as much as possible) and any other cooling systems were shut down

The losing speed when losing weight does sort of make sense because the train is losing mass this losing inertia and momentum. If you think of a ping pong ball full of water being thrown it would have a lot more inertia and so would fly a farther distance than an empty one. You are basically draining the water out while it is in flight. The reason it doesn't make sense is that when unloading the freight you are also reducing rolling friction so it would seem like it would roll easier. The game just bases more of the physics on inertia rather than friction.
