Roach On Top - On the Pole

‪@MarkWintleFishing‬ I try a different approach to catching roach right up in the water by using a pole at about 9 metres. I fish with a 4 x no. 10 pole float and size 20 hooks with casters to catch plenty of roach, rudd and skimmers.

I'm with you. The term 'Silver Fish' is demeaning almost implying everything apart from Carp is of lesser importance. Interesting comments on Bream. I'm confident this accounts for those days when you can't get a bite on the feeder yet are pretty sure the Bream are there. When they're 50 yards out it's more of a problem! Never used a pole but I can see the advantage when fishing shallow. Simple matter to lift and reset the rig. 👍

When I've caught them up in the water it has usually been at relatively close range - from 20 yards right down to barely beyond the rod tip.

I watched an old video yesterday with Ivan Marks and David Hall at Cuttle Mill. Ivan was fishing floating maggots. Food for thought! !

I love the two videos Ivan did and it's a great shame he didn't do some on the river. In the video Ivan occasionally picks up on what Dave Hall is saying, e.g. re the Welland, as Ivan had experienced the venues long before and in very different circumstances. I watched Ivan a few times and on one occasion at Evesham on the Wrks. Avon he was fishing a waggler well over and it truly was poetry in motion, and I remember thinking how good it might have been to film him but this was before I even had a camera never mind the video gear of today. The bait of choice for up in the water does seem to be casters; I suspect floating maggots would be good for the rudd, less so the better roach.

@MarkWintleFishing I watched him once in 1979. We were fishing Longleat and he just turned up with Roy Marlow! He was advising on pegging for a match or so I was told. We fished next to him and he gave us a real education on many things! Amazing bloke and so open! 👍
