Road A2(E35), Saint-Gotthard Automobile Tunnel, Switzerland,

Saint-Gotthard Automobile Tunnel (German Gotthard-Strassentunnel, Ital. Galleria stradale del San Gottardo is a tunnel in the Lepontine Alps (Switzerland) with a length of 16.9 km (10.5 miles). The height of the northern portal is 1080 m, the southern one is 1146 m above sea level. It connects 2 Swiss cantons: Uri in the north and Ticino in the south.

I have seen stray dogs only in Hungary and Russia. In Russia, a pack of stray dogs even attacked me, but the gas from the cylinder stopped them...

Disappointed to see that this tunnel is only 2 lanes. 1 in each direction. Are there plans to expand to a 2nd tunnel with a further 2 lanes?

There is a plan. They want to build a second tunnel in order to renovate the old one. They build first a new one so that they can leave the route open for traffic while the old tunnel is closed. After the renovating is done they will open one lane for each direction in each tunnel, which makes it more save. To have two lanes in each direction is currently not possible for political reasons. There is a paragraph in the Swiss constitution that dosen‘t allow any capacity increases on highways in the alps. It is probably for the better though, to have more lanes only encourages driving and that is not really wanted when you have build the longest railway tunnel of the world for 12 Billion Dollars to bring cargo and people on the rail for this route.

@@RR98guy The Gotthard Base Tunnel opened 2016, which is a railway tunnel. Travel time is way shorter and it is intended for passenger and cargo trains. The tunnel here in the video opened in 1980. The second Gotthard street tunnel would be a project that is planned for the next few years.

I realize you’ve probably not driven in the United States before on the Interstate, so you may not have anything to compare. But is it just my imagination or do a lot of Swiss, French and Italian mountain roads look like awfully slow going compared to the western United States? Of course snow will bring everyone down, but European roads look to be quite well designed and yet speed limits are often only 80kph? That’s less than 50mph where a comparable stretch of American interstate would likely be 110-120kph or 70/75mph. And as you might imagine, NO ONE drives the speed limit either

In general, the movement is not as fast as in the USA, but we would like to. Sometimes the pace is set by the situation on the road, especially in Germany with constant road repairs and heavy traffic. The speed limit for trucks there is 80 kilometers per hour on the autobahn and 60 kilometers per hour on national roads.

Film sans grand intérêt, on ne voit même pas la sortie di tunnel. De plus vous collez alors que vous conduisez un poids lourd mortifere, a la voiture grise qui vous précède dans les 3 dernières secondes du film, alors que vous devriez être à au moins 150m. Le conducteur prend peur et freine pour allumer ses stops et vous prévenir. J espère que votre comportement irresponsable à été sanctionné !
