Serious question- this game can be played with converted Hot Wheels/Matchbox cars, right? Or is there a specific scale car that must be used?

It is really intended for play with standard size car toys that you buy at the store. There's no reason you can't substitute micro machines or larger vehicles, but you will have to adjust the size of the templates accordingly.
