Anyone else think the sheer number of enemies on screen at once is impressive? Or is it actually not as difficult as I think it is?
@wofan1000
@wofan1000 5 ай бұрын
I plan on messing around doing that in unity so hopefully not too difficult 😅

It's interesting conceptually but the models are clearly low-poly, no-texture which reduces the required computing power by magnitudes. This would never work if the zombies used high-quality models or textures. Improving any facet of the game graphically would come at a distinct cost to performance. With that taken into account, no this is not as difficult as it sounds. Computers are best at performing the same small task repetitively, and this is a prime example: each zombie is a very simple task that can be completed in nanoseconds. This does, however, throw all your game proposals out the window; improving the AI or variety would come at a significant performance cost.

@@chernobyl169 For some of it though i feel like it could be pretty simple. Like with zombies getting more aggressive as there are less of them, since the AI getting more complex could be set to scale with the number of active zombies going down. But i'm no expert
@TomaszRyszkowski
@TomaszRyszkowski 5 ай бұрын
@@molluscumlore Oh well that's true! They could add individual zombie ai's for when there is less than 10 000 of them or something like that. I think that there are many ways in which it could be optimised to work, but it wouldn't be an easy task. Making that system would make the game 10x more impressive imo.

Thanks for the good honest review, some great feedback, so you may see some changes in the near future. And for those interested the intro scene contains 500k zombies ;) But yes I agree needs some better gameplay - while its fun mowing them all down, its more like a stress relief game at the moment. Nothing wrong with a stress relief game. These power fantasy 1 vs 1000 types are my favorite type of games. I'm a indie dev too and I plan on making stuff like this eventually. Was it hard to get such a huge amount of enemies on screen?

@@wofan1000 Cheers, and good luck with your endeavors (I am also a team of one) - it was pretty tricky, best tip i can give you is look into Compute Shaders - all of the zombies AI, motion and simple Collision was handled in a Compute Shader, which gives you access to lots of parallel pipelines. Saying that, the best advice I can give someone starting out is start off small - and release something. I've been writing games since 1994 off and on, and have had few real releases. I'm the programmer behind this one which got dropped back then - kzbin.info/www/bejne/eavCl62XqZKVfZI

This feels like those mobile games that are tuned to be exactly as compelling as popping bubble-wrap. You crush the things, and it feels kinda relaxing, and then it's just the same thing over and over. But this one doesn't serve you ads every 20 seconds.

This whole formula reminded me of Undead Bowling; a hidden gem for the 3DS, although 1M Zombies takes place on a much bigger scale, as you only kill up to a few hundred zombies per level in Undead Bowling. Basically, you roll a huge, metal bowling ball through the track filled with zombies that move towards you before every throw. There are a few game modes in it (like a killcount treshold based one), three different types of zombies with different stats, looks and game over screens, a few difficulty settings unlocked after beating the boss level on the previous ones (the boss is real fun, too) and some fun bonuses (like being able to throw an even bigger, jagged with spiked ball once per level, or setting the floor behind your ball on fire after you do a nice combo with it, stunning the zombies caught in the flames for one turn etc.). It's also a tad bit repetitive, but I really do recommend it overall

I slightly worry for when you reach the "100 cats" section of steam. Theyre cute but have no replay value and are essentially just "wheres waldo" but its in complete black and white and the cats are weirdly shaped against the background. Again, cute, but not much else. Oh and theres an achievement for each cat per my knowledge. Ive only played one of them and from that id say ive played them all. There IS a time trial mode but thats only unlocked when youve beaten the game, at which point you likely know where the majority of the cats are.

I think a mode were you were paid for completing missions and had to pay to refill the ammo in your guns could be cool too, a little like the armored core games were every missed missile hurts your wallet and would incentivize efficience and speedrunnig if finishing the level faster also paid better.

@@Graeldon I wonder if there's a way to get an API of the Steam game catalog. Then all you need is some basic javascript and HTML to make your own table you can sort any way you want in a local web environment. In theory it shouldn't be too difficult even for a beginner coder.
