One of the many good parts about Nick's job is getting to test the machines he builds. Hop in and hold on, the power of a stroked out HEMI is about to kick in.

Good video. I got a 1969 Road Runner 383 when I turned 16. It was a demonstrator with 1500 miles. in 1970. Talk about one happy 16 year old. I loved that car. It was blue like that one. Bucket seat and automatic on the console.

Me too. I also loved the 1966 426 Hemi Plymouth Belvedere/Satellite and Dodge Coronet. Those cars were the ultimate sleepers. Those and the 69 A12 440+6 Roadrunner/Super Bee are my all time favorite muscle cars

That was a fun era to be a teenager. Everyone had Camaros, Stangs, Roadrunners, Cudas. My first car was a 68 Vette roadster / hardtop. We had no idea what we had and that it was to be the end of an era.

Many of the cars are back and better than ever. Kids now are not even interested in getting a drivers license and only about half do. First car and car culture was always the American dream. A large part of American culture, so I would imagine that it is heavily discouraged in government schools.

servicarrider to all the muscle car guys try an 88-91 civic with a mild build . I think you guys will like how light the car is and how it handles. I used to hate Hondas because most of them had a horrific exhaust sounds and spray painted wheels but then I built my own with suspension & brake upgrades, also upgrades to the intake manifold and big Cam. Im currently driving a 3800lb Chrysler and there's definitely a difference in the way it drives, If I go slightly over the speed limit

That's right. I'm 22 and would love to have a real mussclecar, my favourite is the 70 Olds 442 with a 4 speed but these are way over 50 grand... Also I'm living in the Netherlands and it's even worse here, has to be one of the most car hating countries of the world. Taxes are extremely high on everything car related and if people even do own a car then it’s likely a shitbox with a 1 liter 3 cilinder engine making an outstanding 60HP and even less torque. Carguys of the young generation are rare but fortunately they exist. For example myself: I have a few projectcars including a ’74 FORD LTD 6.6 2 DOOR rustbucket and a Buick Riviera LXXV with a Olds 403, I put a set #3 heads on which woken the engine up. Now I’m saving money to do a Vortec engine swap with tremec 6 speed on my Volvo 960. As daily driver I’ve got some turbocharged Saabs, those are real fun cars for little money.

I had a 1970 RR when I was 16. 383SC. That car ate chevies at the Sunday drags. The town I was raised in South Georgia had a bad problem with street drags. They open the air runway with NHRA sanctioned. Every Sunday from 8am to 5pm drags. 1/4 mile. I was out against mostly SS Chevell's 396. Never lost a drag. A MOPAR man said let the 727 work it for you, And it did. The few drags I lost were all against RR with the 727. I left it in D green light stomped it and held on for 12.5 to 11 sec. These Mopars were the best cars of the era.

Had a 69 roadrunner it had a wore out 426 hemi, spent the winter and spring building it from ground up. No mommy and daddy paying some stranger to build my car i did it my self, (trust me if i could find one i could afford i would let somebody do the work. I am old now dont bend and twist like i used too.) i took off the dual quads and replaced them with a 1100 duel pump holly, mine also had the automatic transmission, and if it had wings it would have taken off.

I ALWAYS allow 4 times the prescribed distance to stop and in any place where traffic is tight [such as in town] I begin braking earlier so I can reduce the chances of skidding or being too close to somebody and then finding I am going too fast to respond. I have owned several full sized Chryslers and on mid sized [a couple had drum brakes on front even] , and it is first nature to me to begin braking sooner and making sure all that mass gets down to a safe speed or a full stop before I unexpectedly meet up with somebody I don't know on the street and have to do body work or even worse! I would be lying to say I have never been in a collision, even some which I was at fault for, back when I was younger, but those days are over and now its only long smooth and steady on braking, paying full attention to the road in front of me and no distractions!
@matrox
@matrox 4 жыл бұрын
Well one thing about the older cars, unless your brakes were adjusted perfectly which was rare your car would end up going sideways in a skid in a hard brake, so a flush rear end slam would be more like a one fender slam.

Wow having trouble imagining what it would be like to punch 472 cubes of hemi at 60mph. You did an awesome job on that engine Nick. You are the master. My 69 road runner came from the factory with the 383, magnum heads, big oversized valves and a dual point distributor and four speed. I found out those things when I took it to a guy who could fine tune engines. He put different weights and springs in the distributor and set it up on a "Sun" machine. Then he put different jets in the carburetor and ran it with a sniffer in the exhaust to make sure it was right. I swear he gave that car another 40 - 50 HP. It just leaped when I tapped the gas pedal. It was the 383 but I must have got lucky, it was faster than all the others in the area. It came with a 323 sure grip rear axle. It would rev faster but I shifted at 5500 to make sure I didn't over rev the engine with speed shifts. Shifting at 5500 rpm it would go into second gear at 45 mph, 3rd gear at 70 mph, and 4th at 95mph. It could push the speedometer down below the 120 mark so you could not see it. I was reminded of that when I saw the dash in the 68 road runner. I have no idea what speed it topped out at. It is a wonder I survived my younger years. Thank God I had the money and the good sense to keep good tires on it at all times. If I took off and left my foot on the gas pedal, speed shift into second and pop the clutch, it banged as if a car hit me from behind and laid down about 15 feet of rubber with both of the factory tires. I put some sticky Mickey Thompson tires on the back. I would rev the engine at 3000 let clutch up quick and mash the gas at the same time. It would lunge off the line. I was usually one or two car lengths ahead in the first second and just kept pulling away. It got to where no one would race with me. Even the 442 Olds couldn't beat me in the 1/4 mile. He was gaining, I'll give him that but in the 1/4 mile he couldn't get me. But to be fair that big Olds was several hundred pounds heavier. He installed a lower ratio rear gear and he caught up to me about halfway to the 1/4 mile mark, but when I nailed 4th gear I started pulling away, won by a full car length. I suspect he geared it too low. Those were wild crazy times to be 21 years old and have some extra money to waste.

I owned a '68 roadrunner back in the 70's. SAME color only it had a white interior. SIGH, if only I knew then what I know now!

You can definitely see why the hemi wasn't the hands down favorite on the street. The 8-bbl induction needs some rpm to bring it to the torque curve. When Nick stops and power brakes, it is a monster, but when he mashes the gas to hit passing gear, there is a race-losing flat spot that the 383 and 440 didn't have.

Absolutely beautiful Runner Nick! That color is gorgeous. She seems a little on the "Tight" side. Being brand new I wouldn't imagine the idea was to wring the wee out of it, being that it is a customer's car. So I would tend to imagine the tune and settings were on the conservative side. That would explain a lot regarding the short shifting 727, and the less than "Funny car" style burnouts.
