At this level knowing an opening is superimportant imho, simply because you don´t have to worry much about blunders in the early game, saves you a lot of time and also keeps your head fresh to avoid middlegame blunders

your right with the openings but at your level if you learned some openings not fully but decently you can get a very good position off the start

Nothing wrong with your philosophy on openings, as long as you don't blunder pieces you should probably be fine
