This………….. brings me many memories and tears. Have both of you ever been traveled to Yucatán Peninsula and see and feel how The Maya lived and built their temples? That’s a unique experience. Once you go one time and you be trapped into a cultural blend for sure. This movie was the lit for learning about that beautiful culture, after this my daughter (4) wanted to know about El Dorado and she experienced many beautiful things when we were in Chichen Itzá 18 years ago. Underrated movie from my childhood man. Me and my older brother quote this movie all the time and even do the little handshake from time to time. The art is phenomenal, the comedy is on point and the soundtrack _chef’s kiss_ Fun fact: bulls don’t hate red (I believe they’re actually colorblind) they just respond aggressively to rapid movement There’s a theory floating around that the true god was actually the armadillo. The main piece of evidence is that when he’s chasing the butterfly the volcano starts erupting but as soon as he grabs onto Altivo’s leg the volcano stops. It’s a fun theory and kinda makes sense when you realize how often the little guy shows up throughout the movie 😄 Fun little tidbit: there’s a KZbinr (I can’t remember her name) who reacted to this movie and she looks a lot like Chel so a majority of the comments are basically “hey! You’re in the movie” 🤣

I heard a theory that chell was actually the god. Because it's a very closed community and they're acting like they don't know her. Why would they not know her? Presumably she's been there her whole life and they watched her grow up.

Also, how would she even know how to steal gold from the temple in the first place and that it's valuable outside their walls? If it's all she's ever known, what makes her think there's an outside? What makes her think there's an outside that we're gold is valuable? That would be like me taking a rock and trying to use it as money. And I'm not even sure that community had the concept of money. It still looked like they did the trading thing.

This is one of those hidden gems. Also, just because something is animated, doesn't mean its for kids. Most animations and comics are for adults, but done in a way that allows for kids to be in the room. With certain exceptions of course.

I've seen this film described as "The rogue and the bard split from their DnD party and go on an adventure" and like, they aren't wrong. :D But seriously, I have so much love for it. Some of it is nostalgia, I watched it in the theatre multiple times as a teenager, and it quickly became a comfort favourite. But I still enjoy it as an adult. It's also VERY quotable. (You might be surprised how often "We're both in barrels, that's the extent of my knowledge" can be worked into conversation.) The voice acting is on point, the animation is vibrant and full of neat little details, and the music is great. There ARE some holes, and inescapable problems around the "two outsiders arrive in a place and are seen as "gods" by the locals", as you say, but some of the plot-based holes at least can be fixed if you take the opening exposition song ("Our glorious city, built by the divinities..." etc) as in-universe fact, and view it through the lens that the gods actually DID build ElDorado 1000 years ago, and DID send these two chucklefucks... they just didn't TELL them. 😂 It explains the dice, the map, the sea dropping them on the right beach, the armadillo, Altivo, the way everyone can understand eachother, even Chel (we assume she's lying when she says "the gods sent me a vision" but she DID guide them.) This is clearly a version of the world where magic exists (see the giant jaguar) so if we take the opening song as fact,a whole lot of stuff falls into place. [/waffling] Or y'know, it might just have more holes than I noticed as a teenager *shrugs* I am still very fond of it, and could probably recite a large portion of it end to end. Final note, Chel has two hands. There's no way they aren't a polycule at the end of this film.

This theme is the same you'll find in many movies. There's a Sean Connery film with the same premise. Stargate the movie as well. Much of the plot points are exactly the same. Stranded adventurers meet an isolated tribe. They have a banquet as guest of honor. The tribe sees a mark or a medallion revealing that the explorers are like Gods. One guy falls for a tribe girl. It's the same story retold different ways in different settings. Pretty cool.

You're only going to be more disappointed as you get older. Less original ideas are going to be made, just from the massive amounts of movies and shows that come out. You can look pass simple tropes to the writing, animation, VA etc. There's more to movies than a simple premise.

This was such a fun time! The movie is a riff on The Road To ... movies with Bing Crosby, Bob Hope and Dorothy Lamour. The marketing didn't do it any favors by not setting up that link: it'd have side-stepped many of the major critiques leveled against it.

"But if they defend these people against the Spanish...but they don't know they're coming..." First time I watched this movie, I was kinda let down. I'd expected the plot to follow that route, more or less: Tulio and Miguel being found out and nearly getting executed, along with Chel. Cortes' arrival quickly changes things: From then on, it's a fight for survival. And while Miguel and Tulio redeem themselves by helping the natives fight off the Spanish, Khan tries to cosy up to the invaders to save his own skin. The ending: Cortes and Khan dead, Miguel staying with the tribe to help them rebuild their city, and Tulio and Chel are off to make their fortune elsewhere.

Love this movie and the music in it since the first time I saw it as a kid. Great animation and voice performances. But a bit confusing considering the gold matter. Since the whole city is made of gold, in this city it's as common as stone or wood, gold itself loses the typical value. They are ok with it giving it away as tributes into a river (yet the chief does believe in Gods), but are hunting Chel for stealing one piece (ok, probably from the temple). Also the gold had no value for the natives, especially when they didn't know anything about the other outside world. Natives traded with goods they actually could use amongst the tribes... But ofcourse made for kids, so it's ok :D Will love it forever anyways.

If anything this movie turns the White savior trope on its ear by showing two frauds overcome their worldly desires to help a civilization remain safe from conquerors. Miguel and Tulio are suave jerks from start to finish, but their hearts grow by the end.
