Open your ears boys. They don't stop every half hour. They stop every 4 hours for a half hour break. They don't turn off the engine. If you are on the road that long with little or no traffic it gets boring and easy to get tired and fall asleep. Therefore a break every 4 hours is for safety of everyone.

30 minute break every 4 hours is what the narrator said. So an 8 hour drive from origin to destination needs only a single 30 minute break in the middle. That’s perfectly reasonable and sensible.

The SE corner of Australia ( Adelaide/Melbourne/;Sydney/Brisbane) HAD an extensive rail network from the 1880's to the 1950's. We then allowed it to decay, closed literally 100's of spur lines and pretty well moved everything to the roads. The road lobby has dominated politics since the 1960's and the results are there for all to see.

It runs around 470 kilometres (297 miles) absolutely straight. No curve. You should check out the Indian Pacific and The Ghan. There were a spate of gruesome road fatalities decades ago now where trucks were rear ending lines of other vehicles queued up at road works. Drivers zoning out to the extent that they're on autopilot is a problem, hence the rules on breaks. Your standard semi in Australia has been 22 wheels since i was a kid in the 60's. Road trains are several times that number of course. They would be carrying more than 18 as spares. My cousin drove his own truck in Queensland where flooding over roads can extend for many miles, and the risk he took driving through that was having the grease washed out of his wheel bearings. And if you're driving a car, the best place to be on long trips is behind a large truck. In many parts there are no fences to keep livestock from roaming and it's called a bull-bar for that reason.

The 4 hour on 30 minutes off, along with everyone being held accountable came about because of truck accidents due to driver fatigue due to the distances involved.
@kenpassfield11

it is generally a 4 hour drive then a half hour break, in general on the East Coast there will be about 2 hours minimum between servo's (gas stations) that can cater to a Road Train or just a Truck in general. The Drivers will tend to do more hours due to the time constraints that are put on them by the company needing the products moved. For me if I was doing a long trip I actually liked to be behind a Truck particularly at night as they are better able to see what's in front than I am in my car. Also Trucks in Australia are also speed limited to 100km (62 miles) per hour

I drove B doubles. Brisbane to Emerald 11 hours driving one way $950 per trip no loading or unloading. With BFM I could drive for 14 hours with breaks of course. In 35years of driving I have only hit about 4 Kangaroos and now days most drivers stick to the limits of their log books not the other way around. Basic BFM, in 6 1/4 hours you have to have a 15 minute continuous break. In 9 hours, 8 and a half hours work time, in 12 hours , 11 hours work time, and in 24 hours 14 hours work time 7 hours continuous rest.

There is a picture on the wall in the pub with a road train pulling (only just) a 1.5 mile long trailer load. I can’t remember how many trailers, there’s a shot from a helicopter. Aussie road train drivers are the top truckies in Oz. And no the roads aren’t always wide and perfect 😂 I travel for work all over nsw and a bit of Victoria. No driving after that sun dips over the horizon, the Roos literally come out and and line the roads in some parts, especially the outback. The truckies have to keep on trucking though. Rail freight has been captured by the road transport system. I recall as a kid in the 1960's our grandmother would send boxes of seasonal fruits using the rail parcel van system we used to have. She would drop it at the station in central west N.S.W., 300kms distant, to arrive in a Sydney suburban railway station very affordably. Today's generations have forgotten how practical this system was. And please open your ears!!! Road trains are drive a minimum of 4 hours before they have 20-30minute breaks. Trucking companies are huge in Australia. The transport giant "Toll" for example, now owned by the Japanese (I believe) was one of the largest transport operations in the world. There's also "Fox" and "TNT", etc.

My neighbor used to run Sydney -Melbourne return three times a week. He was under an extended hours driving permit. His trip each way is 433 miles plus, he could drive for seven hour with a one hour break. But at the end of a one way trip he had to take a ten hour break. After so many days they have to be away from the truck. He got a huge fine ($700 au) because he bought a new logbook during a one hour break. He was telling me about some foreign drivers running three up rotating seats to bunk. But they would pay a forklift driver to back the semi into the loading dock as none of them could do it. Just another fact is that in the outback on dirt roads you can see the dust or they will call up on the cb. What you do is get off the ride by a good hundred feet if possible and wait for the dust and rocks to settle. The middle of Australia is sparsely populated and rail freight is mainly between capital cities. In New South Wales road trains are not permitted over the mountains and are restricted to the country.

In Australia with basic fatigue management training we can drive 14hrs but with advanced fatigue management you can drive 16hrs but you need to have 2 consecutive nights rest in a week. With the fatigue management training you can drive 6hrs before your first break. If these rules are broken there are huge fines and can be in the thousands of dollars for a single breach, and we lose points aswell. You only get about 12 to 13 points on your license as a professional driver, with the loss of points lasting 40months. If you run out of points you ll lose your license for 3 to 24months depending on the last offence. The lowest payed in the industry for drivers carrying single trailer after tax is about $1800 a week. Its a good gig.

Although Australia is very flat there are still some quite steep hills. I hired a car in Queensland and drove on roads where there were signs to watch out for Road Trains. When I was hiring the car I was asked where I would be driving as if I was planning to drive in some areas I would need a radio so I could contact a driver of a road train if I wanted to overtake him. He would then tell me when it was safe to overtake as it would take some time to get past him, I wasn't going that far into the outback so I didn't need one. The other thing I did experience was that some roads were only one lane wide with the white line down the middle. If you met an oncoming vehicle you were expected to drive half on the road and half on the dirt track to the side. It did concern me that I had seen the warning for road trains on the same road.

My late stepdad was a road train driver. He would make around 3-5000 AUD/week. Mind you, he would do around 10k km/week. The trucks these days have 2 drivers in a truck and they can change on the move. If they have to stop, they will change over. As for the kangaroos, cleaning up 4-5 a trip is a joke. If a mob of roos is feeding on both sides of the road, there is a good chance that you will clean up 5-8 roos driving down a section of the road. One day, heading into Dubbo at dawn, there was a massive mob of a couple of hundred roos feeding beside the road, I tried to avoid as many as possible, but I still managed to clean up about 15 roos in about 1km. The thunk sound they make as they hit the roobar is loud.

Europe: Maximum total driving time Rules apply for the maximum driving time. This is the time when you drive the truck or bus. As a driver you may: driving a maximum of 10 hours per day twice a week (and a maximum of 9 hours per day on other working days in the same week); a maximum of 56 hours of driving per week (if you meet the condition below); a maximum of 90 hours of driving per 2 weeks. This applies to weeks 1 and 2. But also to weeks 2 and 3, and so on. The transport operator must organize the work in such a way that the driver can return to his place of residence at least once every 4 weeks. Or to the company branch where the driver is normally stationed. Maximum continuous driving time A maximum applies not only to the total driving time, but also to the uninterrupted driving time. Uninterrupted driving time is the total accumulated driving time between 2 interruptions (breaks). Or between a rest period and a break. These rules apply to the maximum continuous driving time: The maximum continuous driving time may not exceed 4.5 hours. After 4.5 hours of driving time you must take a break of 45 minutes. This 4.5 hour driving time may also be divided into two parts. The first break will then last at least 15 minutes. In addition, a break of at least 30 minutes must be taken within the 4.5 hours of driving time. A double-manned truck or bus does not have to stand still for 45 minutes after every 4.5 hours. A stop is then only required to change drivers (and driver card or registration sheet). The condition is that the driver taking a break does not assist the driver driving the vehicle. For example with navigation. Not only driving is work, but also other activities, such as loading and unloading. If you work more than 6 hours in a row (continuously), you should also take a break: Do you work continuously between 6 and 9 hours a day? Then you must take a break of at least 30 minutes. Do you work continuously for more than 9 hours? Then you must take a break of at least 45 minutes. You may also take these breaks in 15-minute chunks.

Despite having an MC licence and a forklift ticket and years of experience, I don't even get a call back. The regulations on brakes in Europe is that a truck doing 80 km/h has to stop on maximum 56 meters. These road-trains are heavier, but has more axles, and more brakes, so they'll stop at the same distance

Australian transport industry is heavily regulated. Drivers can drive / work 12 hrs a day under standard hours. 14 hours a day under Fatigue Management accreditation and 15.5 hours under Advance Fatigue Management. There is a lot more detail in breaks that vary across the different accreditations, but under Basic Fatigue Management as an example, you can work up to 6 hours before taking your first 15 minute break. Breaching also is not common within the industry now, but there are still some. Don’t place too much faith in what this chap says in the video as he is way off with a lot of it.

The Chain of Responsibility laws are very real and show how serious Australia takes safety within the industry. Wages are low as far as hourly rate goes. To make a reasonable dollar, you need the overtime. Sadly, there is a lack of respect for truckies in Australia. Most people have no idea of the skill set required. Re accidents, the biggest killer in the industry is fatigue. The majority of fatalities also, a car is at fault, not the truck. Car drivers fatigue is also a big issue as they can drive unregulated hours.

Australia has both rail and road freight; but due to direct rail links between capital cities, there's a greater need for road to cover the large gaps. Mining in Australia has probably some of the biggest road trains.

to answer about rail, no up and down the east coast there is a decent rail system. but between perth and Adeliade, about half the country wide there is one railway line. so most of the outback towns are serviced by trucks, hence the road trains. For example West Australia, Perth is its capital city and the largest city in the state. we have a lot of towns up north like karratha and derby as well as inland that service the mines. with no rail network everything has to be trucked between locations. so the road train was born able to haul massive amounts of goods to and from the remote location.

Actually braking isn’t as difficult as you think. All those extra axles are giving extra brakes. The only thing is that that rearmost axle brakes may take an extra couple of seconds to activate just with the time it takes for the air pressure to go all the way back.

Tell me how you would pull up in a emergency doing 90km downhill pulling over 200tonif it's so easy
@35manning
@35manning 8 ай бұрын
More weight means more momentum, BUT it also means more weight pushing the rubber tires into the road surface which increases the grip and allows you to apply the brakes harder and sometimes you can actually stop FASTER when loaded. I used to run a heavy rigid tilt tray, hauling shipping containers, tractors, construction equipment etc. Empty it took me 3-4 times as long to stop because if I tried to brake hard the rear wheels would lock up. Put a load on the back and I could pull up almost as good as your average car. Trains that run on rails are DIFFERENT because they use steel wheels on steel rails specifically to reduce rolling resistance, which also reduces braking resistance available. A rail train takes longer to stop the heavier it is, a road train doesn't. A road train does, normally, only have a single engine and set of drive wheels, so accelerating will take longer with more trailers and weight, but stopping is shared across the entire road train.

@alankohn6709
@alankohn6709 8 ай бұрын
The rail network does link the major cities but there just isn't enough population to justify the cost of having trains running to smaller towns. The driving limits are because of the distances driven between anything with places in Australia where it can be over a hundred miles between any human habitation. So drivers spend long periods of driving on long flat straight roads and there have been some tragic accidents between trucks and other vehicles most of which have been traced to driver fatigue this lead to strict driving regulations. There is even campaigns during the holiday periods when it is common for people to drive long distances encouraging drivers to 'Stop and revive' with government and charities setting up food vans offering tea and coffee at pull in on major highways

He is not a person who asked any of us how we say Melbourne or Brisbane, how annoying. Brissy is not the bane of our existence, nor does Melbourne equate with the Bourne identity. You can keep saying your Melbourne that way, we shorten ours like Brisbin and Melbin. No neither of these capital cities are like rubbish bins, they are beautiful places, we just like saying them quicker. When all the long railway lines are around the coast and more recently, one up the centre that cut folks farms in half, there are a heck of a lot of places trains don't reach. Even with huge trucks. Order a kitchen in WA and you have a 6 month wait. We had a truckie sadly with covid during lockdown, unknowingly passing his illness across Melbourne during lockdown, even shut down Maccas. You also have a lot of things to check when you stop, how many wheels on 6 trailers.

Weights are wrong on this. I drive quads in north Western Australia and we're running 215t, 60m quads on the highway from the mine to the port. The Bulk Haul body + 6 trailer combo shown 4:56 only runs on private mine roads and are approx. 500t loaded and 100m long. As for braking quad highway trucks, particularly the Volvos pull-up surprisingly quickly if you really have to but yes, under normal conditions a good few kms is used to pull them up using engine brakes rather than airbrakes.

That must have been made quite a while ago. My son drives HR and MC, (Heavy Rigid and Multi-combination). Average weekly wage is ~AU$1000 -1500/week. Local drivers that I know are on AU$750-900/week. Some of the things they note are correct. However I would call this a tourist video, because they say a lot of things that make people say "wow" without necessarily being accurate. By the way, the average truck here is not an 18 wheeler, it's 22 wheels. And in Central Australia they quite often have 6-12 trailers carrying cattle going along dirt road specifically for the road trains

You don't see them in the cities, they're not allowed in the cities. The driver of the Prime Mover has to drive to a depot in a country town somewhere and hook up his trailers. You usually see 3 trailer road trains but 4 trailer ones (and more) do exist but mainly for ore from the mines and livestock. The railway system handles a lot of freight between Capital cities on the east coast and along the south coast between Melbourne and Perth but there is little or no railway infrastructure in the more remote places. If you are moving ore from a central Australian mine to a Railhead somewhere and was only using a single trailer, you'd need a convoy every time. Also, I don't know how old this video is but wages have easily doubled from the amount that the narrator specifies.
