Road Trip Up Virginia's i81 | Sanitarium & Civil War Battlefield

Hi you guys :) I was hoping to get this one out sooner but I ran out of time and was volunteering in Chimney Rock this weekend. Stay tuned for that one next....it is absolutely devastating down there. Anyways, this episode starts off a little rough--but then I figure everything out and visit DeJarnette sanitarium and the New Market battlefield. If you ever pass New Market on 81...GO its so worth it (if you like history)!!! Good night everyone, see you all in the next one :)

My late Uncle went to medical school with a man who worked at this sanitarium. S. Quentin Quale, a.k.a. The Butcher Boy. Dr. Quale was an intern at Willows State Mental Hospital, nicknamed Weeping Willows for its never-ending cries of pain. Through primitive brain surgery. Dr. Quale believed he could create a race of superhumans from the mentally ill... or so the story goes. His terrifying experiments continued until his mysterious death in1952. His burial plot is a small, unmarked grave just outside Staunton, Virginia. Locals have been known to graffiti his headstone with the words: "Dr. Satan"

I live in Southwestern Virginia along I-81. The weather has been "winter" like for the past 2 weeks. We have not had temps higher than 75 since mid-October which is normal here. The snow that you were dealing with, is not that much this time of year. Just about 4 or 5 years ago (maybe more or less, can't remember) it snowed so badly, I-81 was closed for 18 hours. Us locals used atv's to take food and water to those stranded. Cell service depends on the areas where you go. There is a mental hospital in Marion, Virginia (still in operation) along I-81 as well.

If you ever find yourself farther south in Virginia, visit Appomattox, where the war officially ended. I found that place very interesting. It's typical, I suppose, but I live maybe 8 miles from New Market and have been to the battlefield several times, and I've never been to the Bushong house! I actually didn't know you could go through it. So thank you for showing me something in my own backyard! Now I have something to look forward to next time I'm in New Market.

Ive been here a few times. I have a picture of me and my grandpa back in the early 80's in front of that museum. You were 20 minutes from Luray Caverns which is worth checking out. Its pretty cool.

Come up to the Harper's Ferry area. Tons of historic Civil War battlefields. Shepherdstown is awesome! This weekend in Harper's Ferry is the "Olde Time Christmas" celebration. Horse and carriage rides around town. Lots of period clothed actors walking around. It's pretty cool.

Although not a Civil War site, check out the Weston State Hospital ( Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum) in Weston, WV. Definitely worth a visit. It’s almost sickening how people were “treated” for mental illness, but it is our history and a place to see what happens when mental illness wasn’t understood.

Great video. Don’t run your wipers on ice unless your planning to replace them often. Buy or make a windshield cover, Cut Reflectix a little bigger than your windshield and glue some magnets around the side edges. WV’s Babcock State Park “Grist Mill” in winter is a great photo op.

The boys from VMI overran the veteran Union Army and took their cannon… Field of the Lost Shoes is a good movie. I have one of the Limited Edition prints of the Keydets taking the cannon that you showed in your clip. My father went to VMI and taught there, I was born in Lexington at Stonewall Memorial Hospital and we lived on campus when I was a toddler. VMI has fond memories for me, unfortunately Virginia lost much of its heritage and went with the delusional wokeness fad of late, removing many monuments and tributes trying to rewrite its history. Just like the Taliban did in the Middle East.

FRAUD ALERT!! I liked some of her videos about the battlefields and offered for her to make a trip to Gettysburg if she wanted a historical place to stay and do a video. Figured it was a good opportunity for her to make some good content. She wanted me to message her on telegram, so I figured she would like more information. Well I did message her and she wanted some advice what she can approve on so I did. I brought up the reason why i reached out and it turned into some game contest. Pick a random number and "Surprise" I won a Gibson guitar and an I pad pro. I told her I thought she was a serious but I don't know her deal but she is up to something fishy and is a fraud. She asked if I could pay for her flight, just ignored that comment. Just wanted to post this to give everyone a heads up. She is a FAKE!!!
