I've been driving one to work everyday for the past 3 years lmao. If you do basic maintenance when you should, they're virtually indestructible. The problem is that nobody ever took them serious enough to notice it. Definitely don't touch one if you value your safety though, lol

I had one from 1991. I was so cheap I didn't even buy the radio. Still one of the best cars I've had. Great in deep snow bbecause of the stick shift and lightweight.

I drove one as our second car for a few years. It was also red. Liked it, but the wheel bearings kept needing to be replaced. Pretty old and rare by the time I owned it, but not totally unique. One day my son finished his shift at work and was expecting me to pick him up. He saw me a bit further away in a different parking lot, so he walked over and got in, only to realize it wasn’t me, but a total stranger. He quickly realized he was in the wrong car. “You’re not my father!” He said to the surprised woman, and got out.

2010 I gave $300 for my 1988 Festiva. My only vehicle that Ive kept track of all repairs, insurance.....etc costs. I changed out the OEM carb for a Weber. Changed the 12" tires/wheels to 13". One of the previous owners changed out the manual 4 speed transmission with a 5 speed. In 13 years Ive put 80K miles on it. It currently has 223K+ miles on it. All costs including fuel, insurance, repairs, upgrades..etc I still average 15 cents/mile. Very Very fun car to drive. Depending on how I drive it, my fuel economy can rage from 35mpg to 50mpg.

Great video. Love these little cars in theory. Right hand mirrors were an option on maybe cars. I had to pay extra for one from the factory on my custom ordered 84 Olds Delta 88 Royale coupé. It was somewhere around 1985 that Volvo made the right side mirror standard across the board. Honda even slower to add the right side mirror. It was an extra cost option on the 1990 Accord.

Be glad that your Festiva had the five speed. Back in '93 I did a 1,800 mile road trip in my '88 Festiva L with the four speed. That thing SANG on the highway. Thank goodness the speed limit was 55 nationwide, because I would have been a speed bump with the way everyone drives 80mph+ on I-40 across Oklahoma now days. I would have to agree, though, that the Festiva made the best use of space of about any car on the planet. Supremely practical, economical and yes, even fun.

It was fun watching you pick up this car and drive it for the first time. I had an 1988 version that I purchased used with 10K miles and got rid of it at 120K. Very reliable car and it was very roomy for this 6'5" driver. No cassette player, but one could always bring a portable unit with one! Drove 3 times to Florida from Milwaukee and this was a fun car. Too bad that you did not drive this car in its prime. Wonder whether you ever fixed this up.

Mazda and Ford's partnership dates back to the 1970s. Ford Courier (Mazda B-series trucks), Telstar (626), Laser/1991-96 North American market Escort/1988-90 and 91-96 Mercury Tracer/1991-94 Mercury Capri (323), Terrain (Proceed), Probe (626/MX-6), and more were Mazdas rebadged as Fords. Mazda's North American B-series after 1994, the Navajo SUV, and the Tribute SUV were Fords badged as Mazdas. Like Chrysler and GM with Mitsubishi and Suzuki/Isuzu/Toyota, Ford and Mazda parted ways after the Great Recession in 2010. Maybe we'll get the awesome BT50 crew cab here someday. The last of the engines Ford and Mazda developed together are still in use, as many of the EcoBoost's bones are built on Mazda's all-aluminum designs. Mazda's manual transmissions made it into many smaller Fords, usually for the better, and the Mazda diesel could be found from 1984-87 in the Escort/Lynx and Tempo/Tracer, longer than you could find it in their own 626. Mazda made Fords better, and Ford gave Mazda more access to markets it wouldn't have had the budget to go into otherwise. I'm glad they are apart though. Mazda makes better cars now, and Ford is developing in it's own way, too.

I sold cars at a Ford dealership when these came out. They didn't sell very well but I loved them. If memory serves a top of the line one was around $6K. It seems like they started around $4.5K. I'm not so sure about the Mazda backstory. I remember seeing Manufactured by Kia on those cars. perhaps on the plate inside the door. It has been a number of years and I could be wrong. Until that time I had never heard of Kia. Then when we got a Kia dealership in a newrby town I remember associating that to the Festiva. Those seat belts were Ford's answer to the new (at that time) mandated Supplemental Restraint System.

I have a 92 Festiva model L hatchback 5 speed read just like that little shit box. Though mine only has 90000 miles and everything works. Still has the original 12 inch wheels I just put a new set of tires that cost a whopping $29 each. Strictly driving it around town and gets about 45 mpg, running 60 mile per hour on the highway it gets 52 mog and running a steady 75 miles per hour it gets 40 mpg.

I drove a festiva for years took it on a 9000 mile road trip through canada and the states . The thing I like most about it is the 360 visibility. Driving to scenic places was awsome no modern car I've driven has had such visibility. I drove a ford focus on a 5000 mile drive and it was very reduced visibility. I dont know why new car designs are trying to blind the driver .

Most of these festivas do not have a passenger side mirror. I have a 1991 Ford Festiva GL that I drove from Seattle to Myrtle Beach South Carolina and in about a week I’m going to drive it back to Seattle. Great gas mileage but you might use a little oil. Noisy interior but you can start out in second gear at a light and surprise everybody. 40 mpg or better.
