Our superintendent of our school district was going to spend 750,000 for a generator to run the rural junior high. They were going to do a survey to see how big they needed. This was a case of let’s see if the community is paying attention. I told him in his best interest not to run again because I’m going to fight him all the way. He retired. I shared this because politicians get their kickbacks from these jobs. I’m sure your 56 million improvement has a lot of hands in the cookie jar. We all have to pay for this behavior in our property taxes. It’s really a sore subject with me. All the vintage items brings back a lot of memories with me. I have had probably 30 percent of these in my possession through the years. I had several of the radios, champion spark plugs, telephones and the refrigerator you showed at the end. Great show, thank You

Thanks for the tour's, Scout. It is amazing how far electronics have evolved. The size of the earlier components with the tubes and wooden chassis are amazing. Then in the late 60's - early 70's all the kids were walking around with those tiny transistor radios. Thanks for sharing.

Wow, the museum was awesome. I saw some units that remind me of the stereo I had as a kid. I would never have remembered it otherwise. My unit had this massive volume knob like 3" dia and it stuck almost 2". I always thought it was so cool it spun like silk. If a good song came on a quick flick and that thing would spin to slam the stop at full volume if you weren't careful.

Thanks John, it was great to see more of the Pavilion, the Unisphere is cool, and just shows the merit of using quality materials. It's sad to see these venues deteriorate over the years, legacy is a big consideration for any new project of this kind to ensure there is a lasting use and benefit once the event is over. The radio museum was very interesting too, quite nostalgic identifying some old equipment of my Father and Grandfather, I live quite near Chelmsford where Marconi opened the world's first wireless factory. That WD40 radio was surprisingly good, but the Champion one is super-cool obviously !

Thanks for taking us along. I was introduced to a lot of the old radios by seeing them in old used furniture stores 50+ years ago. What helped understand them was old movies and TV shows on in the late afternoons or Sunday mornings. Crosely was an interesting guy. You might say he was the Henry Ford of radios. He made them for the regular income person. Got to say though I am more fond of transister radios and work hard not to collect them. One I watch for is the Panasonic Panapet R-70. They are to expensive just to put on a shelf. They were fun to have them playing and give it a spin. Then again I liked to talk into a fan.

A blast from the past! When we were kids back in the late 60's and early 70's , we'd skip school and travel by bus and subway to attend early afternoon Mets games at Shea. Often we'd get there before the gates opened and with extra time on our hands we'd wander over to the adjacent old World's Fair grounds and peer into the empty buildings and hang out around the Unisphere. It was eerie and sad at the same time because the buildings were becoming distressed and unkempt, but it's good to hear you say that an effort is now being taken to fix up this historic site. That radio & communications museum is one cool hands-on museum that I will make an effort to check out. Thanks for another great episode!

Your road trips are alot of fun. Plus, I don't have to drive for a change. The radio museum is really interesting. I've always been fascinated by radio for some reason. The people who figured out and made radios practical are in the same class as the people who figured out and made electric motors practical. They were all off-the-charts geniuses. Your visit to the world's fair site sent me to my postage stamp album. The USPO issued stamps to promote both fairs in 1939 and 1964. The 1939 trylon and perisphere structures were torn down in 1940. Too bad, because they were very cool looking, but alot of world's fair stuff was not meant to be permanent. The Unisphere stands on the old t and p site today. I'm glad the NY pavillion, including your rapelling towers, still stands, along with the Unisphere. The Gateway Arch in St. Louis is also made of stainless steel.

I worked for a company where we had a trade show there that was put on by the City and we would park our equipment in front of the Unisphere. It looked so cool. Certain sections of the museum reminded me of Mr Carlson's Lab. And you can't say you went to a weird swapmeet and not elaborate. Damn, didn't you learn you lesson from mentioning the "funny story" you had about the towers that got us here in the first place? I also like how you left the door of the truck open just in case you had to make a fast getaway. 😄 Something else about the cost on patching them up. Think about all the man hours that we put into restoring some of these old tools which in a lot of cases out weighs the time it took to make them in the first place. I imagine all the years of neglect have taken a toll on the structures.
