RoadcraftNottingham. I passed my test several years ago. until I was 35 years old, I had never even tried to learn. NOT ONCE from the first sunday CBT through to part 2 did my instructor even mention the concept of counter steer. All I got was, " Stop leaning your body and turn the bars". This always felt forced to me. Clear to see why now. Thanks, Ian at one to one motorcycle training in Newcastle Under Lyme. Surely this is the most fundamental basic to somebody who has never ridden!

​@breezelow unknown clearly you have no idea what you're talking about. That which is described in the above video is known throughout the motorcycling world as countersteering. You do indeed turn the bars a little in the opposite direction of the corner to intiate the turn. You can in certain circumstances end up countersteering with the tail of a bike out as well just as you can with a car, but that's beside the point. Also, why all the capitals? Have you never been to school?

I think counter steering is one of those things that is harder to explain than to do. When riding it is impossible not to countersteer but is sounds complicated when someone explains it. Good vid :)

This is the single most important method I've ever learned. I'd already been a rider for a couple of years, and a friend of mine who just got his license and wanted to learn bought a book by Keith Code called "A Twist of the Wrist", a racer's training course. One of the lessons he shared with me was "Push right, go right. Push left, go left." I started practising this, and I couldn't believe how easy it made riding. No longer was I trying to lean to make the bike do things. It mad e riding effortless, and ultimately more enjoyable.

Yep, you can countersteer a turn so much easier than lean your way through, especially on a heavier bike.

After about 40 years of not riding, I'm getting back into it with a maxi-scooter. Back in the 70's, I just bought my Suzuki, hopped on it and took off...never heard of counter steering until I started looking into getting back on two wheels. I've read countless articles and watched numerous videos on the subject of counter steering, but this video (even if you're driving on the wrong side of the road) is the absolute best in explaining the subject. Just from the way it's presented, even in the MSF course, the principle is confusing to most of us who are either new to the game, or are returning to it. Thank you very much!

+Chevron Baz Balance, particularly at low speed, has been the hardest thing for me, but is the reason the teacher can ride with only one hand. I'm improving greatly, and the more I ride, the more my past abilities come back. This video is even better than the instruction I received at the Motorcycle Safety Foundation course. Best explanation on KZbin. Its so confusing with people saying this is wrong. Don't listen to anyone else and follow the techniques used in the video and u will glide round corners. Anyone that says this is wrong doesn't know what there talking about. Clearly it's right or he wouldnt be able to corner using 1 finger tip only. Everyone does this naturally without even realising but accentuating helps corner even better.

I just starter riding a scooter and I came across a youtube video about counter steering and it blew my mind. With a sense of trepidation I decided to experiment with it next time I got on my bike and when I did I was amazed to find that counter steering is what I naturally did anyway without ever being concious of it! I must be a natural or something. Being aware of it now has made my scootering experience all the more exciting!

I don't understand why this is called "counter" steering. To me it just seems like normal steering. Pressure on the left bar, turn left. Pressure on the irght bar, push right. This shit just confuses new riders. Been riding for a few months now and I was always unconfindent in my turning abilities because I didn't know what "counter-steering" was and felt like I was turning the wrong way, only to find out later that I had been counter-steering all along and all the discussion regarding it was making it seem like a lot more that it really was. If you're a new rider, don't even bother watching videos on counter-steering or learning about it. It's just going to make things more convoluted when taking on the already nebulous task of first learning to ride.

+Serenity the Insane No, it's not. Counter steering is pushing in the direction you want to go. You want to go left at speed you push left as shown in this video, you want to go right you push right. The reason it's "counter" to normal steering is that when you're normal steering under 10MPH you push the left handle bar up, which turns the entire wheel to the right, and thus you go right. While what you said isn't counter steering, that's exactly what you want to do. Exactly as you described. If taking a right turn, you want to start at the outside of the bend and go in. So if you need to go left to get to the outside of a right turning curve before you make the right turn then, go left slightly first (by pushing left) then counter steer right (push right) to make the turn. To make it very simple push and lean in the direction you want to go, you will get used to how much lean as you gain more experience.

If you want to take a left hand bend at speed , this is what you do . ....At the point in the bend where you want the bike to turn in you put a ''little'' pressure on the left hand bar, pushing it ''As if '' you were steering to the right, (This is why it's callled ''Counter -Steering '' ),...it's very slight and only takes a split second but the effect is rapid direction change . ..... It's best to push the bar at about 45 degrees to the road surface so that you push slightly to the right and also slightly down to the ground ..... What then happens is the back end of the bike moves though the headstock so that you end up pointing more into the corner , and almost simultaneously you look into the corner , dropping your left shoulder and placing a bit more weight to push the bar downwards , the bike will drop easily into the corner ...... So, you take a left hand bend with very little actual steering to the left ! To make it easier to understand , try watching a vid on speedway racing ...They are almost constantly taking a bend , usually to the left , and you can actually see their handle bars turned to the right and watch as the back end of the bike slews around , turning the whole bike around the bend . ..... Try it ,....It's far easier than it sounds .

I’m still on L plates driving around on a 125 for a year and or My dad told me to counter steer and told me to push down on the bar, the way you want to go but to me this didn’t make sense as when I was trying it I was struggling to see the benefits. I’ve since watched this video and it now makes complete sense! I’ve been trying it out and corners are much better to me, especially doing s bends. This has helped out at large roundabouts for me not to look like I’m wobbling. The explanation of strings at 45degrees helped.

I dont get how can people be unawere of this, specially people who actually ride motorcycles everyday!. Before starting my online research for a bike (i'm trying to learn as much as i can before buying it), i already knew this, i didnt even know it had a name, but i've been riding bicycles all my life, and this effect applies just as in a motorcycle. It's something that you do naturally, but when you actively use it, you have A LOT more control.

ComandanteJ From basic training to big bike test my instructor never mentioned it once. I used to hear, " stop steering with your body and turn the bars". As an absolute beginner you believe what you are told. It always felt forced. A little bit of useful knowledge goes a long way. Countersteering is the ONLY way to corner a bike at speed. You cannot in any way, shape or form, corner a bike above 8 mph or so WITHOUT countersteering. It happens subconsciously. All you're saying is being aware of it lets you use it more advantageously.

I do not have my licence and have been riding on occasion, mostly motocross bikes, and a harley once. I'm thinking about getting my licence next year for my 40th birthday (I know, late bloomer, but I am a car fanatic before anything else) and when I heard of counter steering I did not exactly understand it. I am just getting back onto a bike, first time in over 25 years. Last time I rode a bike I was 17. And I just got a permit and jumped on a bike back then (no training at all needed in the 80s). I am scheduled to take my safety course in 3 weeks, where we learn the basics, but have had the opportunity to ride the bike I'm buying for a couple hours now, in an abandoned industrial area. Example of why it works: the hull of a sailboat is perfectly symmetrical from left side to right. As it sits in the water, it is level and the surface of the water touches the painted boot strip evenly at the waterline. From there, the hull tapers to a seam and keel at the centerline. Driven by its engine, the boat presents its symmetrical shape to the water it is about cut through and the water flows evenly on both sides. But when the sails go up, the wind heels the boat over. The boot stripe on one side is submerged, on the other it is lifted out of the water. The tapered hull no longer presents symmetry to the water it’s passing through. The water takes a longer route to flow past the hull on one side, than it does on the other. The boat will have a tendency to turn into the wind. The motorcycle tire also presents asymmetry when it leans and it will want to turn just the same. There is far more to the explanation for both vehicles, particularly the gyroscopic affect of spinning wheels but counter-steering does two things. It makes the motorcycle quickly present asymmetry to the road surface and it helps shift the center-of-gravity and the center-of-lateral effort to the inside of the turn. When the boat heels too far, it broaches and we spill our beer

Thanks for the video. In my experience, a newbie doesn't necessarily apply countersteering naturally or automatically. When I started out I was trying to turn the bike just by leaning. Bad idea. Just leaning doesn't do the job, and turning got a lot safer and easier when I counciously started countersteering.

I have watched a lot of videos re this topic and never really understood the bit about when you push right, the wheels initially go left ... This video didn't really mention that bit but is probably the clearest video I have seen on this topic. Best advice I can give is to try it yourself ... If you want to go right, push right, if you want to go left, push left. That's it, that's all it is. Once you've got that, don't try to understand it coz it messes with your head. Counter steering put simply is = push left to go left and push right to go right. Don't over think the physics of it all!

In my day Counter-Steering was referred to as 'Riding Ya Bike'. I'm in my 40's now and ride daily. My partner is now going through CBT and came home the other day going on about Counter-Steering - What? I said, Counter what? Steering, numb-nuts don't you know anything? I'm not that experienced a biker so I could be wrong, but surely this isn't countersteering? This is just... steering. Countersteering is where, in order to take a left hand bend, you flick the bars slightly to the *right* (hence the name _counter_ steering). This is just done to initiate the lean; as soon as the bike is over you straighten the bars again and continue as normal.

The best thing to do in this situation Richard is to simply go out and experiment. People have said to me once the initial bar push is made, the bike continues in that curve but I find it wants to sit up again. Let me know what you find.

I thought that countersteering was an optional / advanced technique (the fact that it has its own name helps that misconception I think), but it turns out that it always happens. Even when someone knowledgeable such as you demonstrates it on video the movement of the bars at speed is so small that you don't notice it. All this time I thought that to turn I've just been forcing the bike over. It turns out that you actually turn the bars the "wrong" way very slightly at the beginning. Who knew?! Thanks for the videos by the way - I've watched loads. I especially like the braking game and vanishing point ones.

THIS is counter steering. He does a good job of explaining it very simply. Bottom line, when riding - lean into your turns and LOOK where you want the bike to go. Always LOOK into the direction you want the bike to go.

I disagree with the whole term. Just watch the video: the handlebars are turned with the turn, not counter to it. In speedway, some dirt riding, and even in rear-wheel drive rally cars (rare these days) you see genuine counter-steering. On bitumen, that little push down on the turn side gets the bike leaning which is perfect, but that is all it does. I used to teach downhill skiing and recognise the principles: get your inside shoulder lower, keep pressure on the outer ski. The idea that one steers "in the opposite direction" is simply confusing.

I guess the best way to say it is that you're actually applying pressure in the opposite direction of where you want to go. You literally push right in order to go left and left in order to go right. It's a hard concept to visualize without actually being on a bike for sure but in practice with a conscious effort you definitely do notice the benefits of cpuntersteering. In my opinion it leads to much tighter turns and better understanding of the bike's mechanics

sweftwp The physics of counter-steering are confusing, so don't think about the details to much. All you need to know is that the harder you push your right grip, the tighter your right turn. Yes it happens naturally, but if you want to be the best rider you can be, you need to understand and utilise it consciously.

No when he pulls to the right the bike leans LEFT, so he must push more right to go right, hence the term countersteering. Yes, it is just natural, it's exactly the same as a bicycle, the main point here is push the handle bars down to the road rather than pull the handle bars towards you, the other point is that people may do this without actually understanding, only once you properly understand what you're doing then you can perfect your skill.

The counter steering concept has been demystified 😁👍 I am a middle-aged, lady rider, also living near Nottingham,who has only just passed her CBT and I don’t mind admitting that I feel thoroughly ill-equipped to be riding on the road - despite already being a car driver and so very well aware of road rules and potential hazards! One might argue that this video is too advanced for a beginner but I am of the opinion that you should learn, practice and demonstrate proper technique right from the beginning of the learning process. To this end I have booked a 2 hour lesson with my instructor to help troubleshoot my riding technique, such that it is. I will continue to arm myself with knowledge though and so thank you for creating this excellent content! 😁

Finally a logical explanation - which in the course of it makes it clear that the term 'countersteering' is a bit non-sensical. I love the sentence "It's impossible to get a bike around the corner without countersteering". Which should be pretty obvious to anyone who ever rode a bicycle at more than 10 mph and made a turn without crashing off the bike. The mass of a bycicle is much lower but the physics is the same. I had two friends lose it on corners this week and I've been trying to explain counter steering to them, I just sent them this link, it explains it well. Funny thing, I have always intuitively counter steered, and it never occurred to me that not everyone understands this.

Ah ha, I get it now! Just push in the direction that you want to corner. This is the second, but by far the simplest video that I have watched regarding counter steering on a motorcycle. Real world practice will obvious be key 👍

This is by far the best explanation. It wasn't covered in my CBT because didn't really spent much time on these kind of roads. I found myself really struggling with my cornering because I was just overthinking it. I was focusing too much on steering right and then trying to fight the bike as it tried to lean left. Once I relaxed, allowed the bike to move more naturally and use countersteer everything was fine.

Back when I was a paperboy, I used to fly down hills on my bicycle and steer the bike with a few fingers. Never knew this was countersteering, thanks for the explanation

Very nice video..I am a biker all my life(more than your age) I was just reading a forum with confused people about countersteering and I decided to search utube and what I found was a huge mess.People over thinking it, and the end result is not only a bad explanation but WRONG.They try to explain it with all the scientific things they read and they end up saying wrong things. So a slight downwards pressure, that explains it. Many people don;t include that important piece of information which is why counter steering confuses so many people. Thank you for a more clear description. Now I can practice with proper technique.

+ivantoxie downwards is the key term here. pushing and pulling the handles to a non rider simply means turning the front wheel. i agree, very well explained in this video.

Counter steering is the thing that makes your self balancing motorcycle so easy and precise to steer and corner at speed that it IS THE THING that makes riding a motorcycle so unbelievably fun to ride when riders talk about the joy of going down a twisty mountain road, THIS is what they are talking about: Counter steering the bike thru the curves, it leans and balances all by itself while you put the tire exactly where you want it on the pavement, with almost no effort. Its like flying an airplane 3 feet off the ground

"Push on the bars" can be confusing to the novice. "Push forward on the bars" is more accurate, saves them trying to push down! Another great video, keep up the good work!

This is by far the best explanation I've seen on the subject. The only other thing I'd say is to emphasise what Osmund Lind Iversen said - don't think of it as counter-steering because that really is where the confusion comes from. Think of it as a slight push to get the lean you need and then the bike does the rest (thank you, physics) :D

Hey there, I've been following and watching the very useful KZbin video's that you've posted over the past while. I live in Canada but was born in Ireland, so can drive on both sides of the road. Since I live in Canada my newly bought Kawasaki Vulcan 800 classic which I bought for myself over Christmas, I have to unfortunately to wait until the county council start cleaning and clearing the roads if sail and sand because of the very severe winters who have here. I really loved your video on how to go around bends and corners, as well as the one on how not to 'bang" the bike into gear which I have trouble doing !!! You just do it all so smoothly and it frustrates me when I'm trying to do it properly but seem to fail the transmission change so badly. I'm fairly new to biking so still on a huge learning curve. Love watching your very informative video's. Its a pity that I live in Canada and not in the UK, coz I would drive to see you just to get a lesson from you for sure!! Thank you for your great demonstrative video!! It's new to me as a newb, but still very intuitive. I noticed right away that my lean was not going to happen until I put pressure on the grip. Then it just happened. I want to practice quick maneuvers to help with lane positioning in turns and avoiding accidents.
