In the USA you have to custom order that but on the showroom you will see three separate cars to choose from. I also believe the online configurator may offer the option to add sport package components to the Luxury and Modern lines but what happens is that the configurator will change the entire car you ar building from Luxury or Modern to Sport if you select sport seats or M package or Sports trim.

Yes, but you should be able to turn it off by pressing a button (as in most cars). It's something to get used to, but it does save gas in the end...

Ross you are a genius for describing the real world differences between the lines. None of the reviews has discussed the trim lines. I dislike BMW taking one great all-in-one car and separating it into it three constituents for purposes of marketing. My 2001 330i offers luxury comfort and tech amenities when stationary, has a modern asthetic appeal and all unleashes a full sport arsenal when it needs to during driving. I was hoping the 2012 Luxury trim would be the safest bet but it's a softie!

There's a large supply of 3 series here, 80+ come in after the winter then most of them are sold mid summer. You could easily find one with 40-55K miles on it for $17-18K and talk it down to $14-15K

Ross - can you compare this 50k BMW to a 2012 Acura TL sh-awd. I own the Acura, and to me, it is a better value in the same class as this car. Curious as to your thoughts.

Ive had my car for 2 years and since owning it ive had a few issues. Yes they are expensive to fix but that's what you get for driving one. I still love driving it and even though i have spent more money on it I strongly believe the holden equivalent in price would be nowhere as nice to drive.

Tbh the three trim levels are mostly about aesthetics. All three have the same basic suspension, sound-proofing, steering, etc. The stuff that makes a difference in driving such as Adaptive M Sport Suspension, Variable Sport Steering and such are all options (and expensive ones at that).
@DenHond
@DenHond 12 жыл бұрын
You can still get the M sport suspension or adaptive suspension on the luxury/modern trim lines, as well as sport seats right from the option list... at least in Europe...

I'm loyal fan of the 3 series but this new one although has grown on me has yet allowed me to fall in love with it. I appreciate BMW's belated efforts in increasing the level of quality and standards but its hard to credit a brand that just now in 2012 is starting to offer features like a rear view camera as an option or even powered seats as standard which I might add has been among its rivals for several years now. I like the 3 series but not even the BMW name plate can justify thier price tag

I would also like to disagree with you. The trims are simply a form of customization for the 3 series and you are forgetting that you can simply choose none of the trims if you want. You also forgot the M- Trim which is perfect for BMW enthusiasts.

I am sorry my friend but I must disagree. The sport line on the 335i is great. The suspension, the looks, everything worthy of a BMW, not to mention that now you have the m sport line available as well. So, for enthusiasts, like me, the spark is still there (my only criticism goes to the brake feel and the steering is not quite as good, but it is still much better than the competition). As for the other lines, that's BMW being smart and branching out, making more money to keep making great cars.

Why not buy it from Germany and get it to Norway on a ferry ? Also if you want it to be a lot cheaper go in Bulgaria for instance..It costs round about 50 000 BGN or 25 000 EUR ..And its not only the cars imported, mostly all of the taxes in Norway are high especially for importing something..

I don't mean driving feel, as in steering and handling. I'm talking about interior materials, and solid build quality. Ex, knocking on the dash of a Yaris feels hollow and plasticy, but the dash of an Audi A1 feels solid like wood, My A1 feels more sturdy than a Corolla for example. It just feels tightly put together

Ross is awesome - love the end bloopers. I've always loved the 3 series but never been a fan of the ride feel (too firm - I am aware why it is). BMW is great at what they do and have the loyal following to show for it but having to pay so much for options is crazy nuts. Also, BMW reviewers must REALLY love this car to ignore what to me is an interior eyesore, that oddly placed Nav screen. I believe if it were any other car makers I don't think it would be so widely ignored and accepted.

Great review. Some comments: Old school BMW owner...I have a E36 M3 and an E30 318. Looking to get into the new school BMWs in two years...This car should be quite compelling, even though I will miss that damn fine I6 bmw has been pushing for a long time. This car gets great mileage, has decent power, but I feel like it's too big, and the steering might be too dull for my tastes. Should be a fine DD, and i'm guessing prices for the 2012 will go down to about 20-25K in 2 years.

In Europe the only engines that sell are turbo petrol and turbo diesel - they consume less and have a loooot of torque - this matters a lot to people here - the fuel price in Europe is more than twice the price than in USA ;)

Well damn that sucks... Looking at the US car configurator, you also seem to have a lot less engine options (316d, 318d, 320d, 320i) and overall options when compared to Europe... At least they are cheaper in the states ($34.000 in the US and €37.750/$46.600 in Europ for the base 328i)
@sonnyman93
@sonnyman93 12 жыл бұрын
Options wouldn't make a performance difference, it's very minimal. and just for $550 tune you can have a 335i that is faster than M3s. That's how much BMW holds back the power.

I'd take a base 335i over a loaded 328i. At least the 335i still has a I6 motor and even though it's turbocharged it's still closer to what a BMW should be.
@GeorgeKnighton

Amplification: Went and looked at performance figures. You'd need a fully optioned 335 to equal the Acura's performance. I don't see how we can say that a BMW just "feels better" enough to be worth the difference in price and the difference in reliability.

Yes, how childish of me to think that when reviewing high end products such as bimmers and jags you could wear something that goes along the lines of the luxury product being reviewed. In no way did I criticize the review Ross did. By all means his review is 10x better than the original. Im guessing you saw the emails of the people that shop at wal-mart and was surprised to see your photo in one of the pics.

Well that was his point. If you want to shell out tons of extra cash just for "feel", you go right ahead. However, it's perfectly reasonable, and perhaps more wise, to go with the car that is better than the BMW in more ways than it is worse than it.

Ross, the review is good and professional. I'm not sure why we continue to wax poetic about BMW, however, when for much less than the price of your 2012 328i you could get a 2012 TL SH-AWD 6-6 that would basically kick its BMW ass and be more reliable in the process.

I liked Shannon's review better, because she talked about things that relate to how people use there cars (for the technologies). People today don't buy there BMWs for driving they buy it for the BADGE ! And BMW has notice that, that's why they really don't care about how much time they invest into their cars. Sad but true.
