I live in southern Arizona, and film wildlife as a hobby. Doing it at this level requires talent for sure, but also lots of time and money. This is a team effort, and the BBC nature doc team is likely the best in the world . . . and then there's David Attenborough!

It's understandable to feel disappointed when childhood fantasies don't match up with reality. However, the real-life roadrunner may not be as exaggerated as its cartoon counterpart, but it still possesses impressive speed and agility. The beauty of nature lies in its ability to surprise and captivate us in unexpected ways.

I grew up in Texas and roadrunners were a fairly common sight but always a treat to watch. They can fly but strongly prefer to run, and they are good at it. Birds are, as he said, descendants of dinosaurs, but certain species make it easy to imagine those dinosaurian ancestors moving about their living world before the end-Cretaceous extinction. Cassowaries, with their size and killing claws, and roadrunners, with their effortless running pace, alert search for prey, graceful leaps, and that long, balancing tail.

In a park across the river from Ozark Arkansas I watched a mother teaching her two young to hunt. She took one while the other stayed with dad in taller grass, watching. Mom caught a grasshopper and crushed it enough to make it easy to catch but still moving. Then they switched over to the other baby and repeat. Never witness anything like that.
