Fun fact: A Roadrunner's diet is of lizards, small rodents, and even snakes. I live in Arizona, and at my work, we always have a local Roadrunner that likes to chill around the area. One time, i saw it with a large lizard in its mouth, and it ran into the desert where i assumed it ate its lunch. They're beautiful birds, and great hunters!!

You notice how it jumps and .o es constantly, flaring its wings and tail? Darker plummage heats up and rattlers are heat seekers, put vipers. It's also a distraction, making itself look much larger. There is a video, I think it's on here, but I'm not sure, of a guy in Texas, I think, who rehab'd animals and gad experience with RRs. Some vet or rehab agency brought him several baby RRs that he reared and released. Cool video.

Se wouldn’t exactly be dinner if they were 6 feet or 10 feet. Ostriches are 61/2 feet sometimes 7 feet and they don’t eat us. Also we would simply shoot them down. They’d be more dangerous to other animals, but never to us. Now eagles the size of 6 feet would be more dangerous since they are stealthy fighters and can even see from a mile away. An eagle of 6 feet would be able to see you from 5 miles away. Now that’s impressive

@@EAMitch Do you live out in the country or in the city? Thank God for the Roadrunners giving you some snake protection, though the snakes are GREAT for rodent control, too. Glad you have no Mojave Greens since they are VERY venomous. I came across a HUGE Prairie Rattler in Kansas before sunset in 2005 and it scared the hell out of me!!! Thank God the snake moved on into the night for some good hunting but I got the hell out of that area FAST! I have been to that monument site many times and that was the FIRST time I ran into a rattler. Incredible patience, bravery, cunning and skill on the Roadrunner's part. Most of you dont realize the bird has no lee-way for a mistake because ONE mistep/bite from the snake could be fatal for the roadrunner. Red tailed hawks also have this uncanny quality, and of taking on even larger poisonous snakes using similiar tactics.

We had a roadrunner come past our place 2 days ago that was about 50% larger than this one. He was running about 40-50 mph because a truck came up about the same time and wasn't gaining on him. We also got lots of rattlers so I'm glad the roadrunner can take them out. We lost a dog 1-1/2 years ago due to rattle snake bite. We hired a trapper who came out and removed 12 from under our home. Kudo's to the roadrunner.

FYI, Roadrunners 's and ground squirrels have built up immunity from the rattlesnake's venom. Besides raptor's Roadrunners are one of the few birds that there diet consists mainly of other animals like snakes, lizard's, other birds and rabbits. they will raid other nest for the young or even the eggs. We used to ball up hamburger and they would take it right out of our hands. Cool birds.

I hike up Griffith Park about 5 days a week, but I'm from Ohio and never saw rattlesnakes until now (I see them constantly). The more I learn about them, the less they seem like monsters and the more they seem like terrified food... food for coyotes, hawks, owls, other snakes, and even roadrunners. And they've only got one weapon (their bite), but it can only go up to 2/3 the length of their body, many animals have developed some immunity, and when they launch and miss, they're totally vulnerable. Not very high on the food chain after all.

Well...depends on how you use the term poison. In some fields a venom would not be called a poison. To them a poison is something that passes through the stomach wall. Toxins and venom are non poisons. Now in a more informal way, venom is a poison, as is toxins. In a non formal definition, poison covers anything that enters your system and can cause you harm. So, it depends on your perspective.
@Peorhum

Ignorant? I am being scientific. As I said to some venom is a poison but in scientific fields it isn't. The general public would call venom a poison for sure. So everyone is right...depending on their point of view.

Roadrunners are descendants of the Raptor....they are not this nice little birdie like you see in the cartoons...actually the Roadrunners eat these types of snakes on a regular basis...as per usual when dealing with vipers or other poisonous snakes, the roadrunner, mongoose, eagle, etc, tires the snake out first then with one quick move to the head/neck they grab the snake and break it's back and/or neck then consume it

Right, because genetic information can change by mutation, and genetic information of a species can be lost by death, that means that all genetic information was built accidentally by natural forces over an unfathomable amount of time that could not conceivably be observed through a process that hasn't nearly explained the staggering amount of possible internal biological change of tissues and organs of the diverse range of all species.

Here in Australia, birds do that sort of thing to distract any animal away from their chicks or eggs. Many ducks will act like it has a broken wing to lead that animal away. I think the roadrunner was doing the same.

Snakes have very limited energy, ambush predators that feed rarely and digest slowly. The mongoose, meerkats likewise tire them out first. Humans are actually the apex endurance predators. Early human hunting was primarily tracking, animal runs away startled, human follows. Humans walk efficiently, which is due to our massive glutes and bipedal movement. This is why humans need to wipe after the toilet actually, as our butts are overdeveloped. Human success isn't actually much to do with opposable thumbs or brains much (our brains developed due to tracking needs, deductive reasoning etc.) I think ostriches are the only things capable of out enduring humans on land. But we can eat their eggs easy. After we got the spear, well, predators are on the menu. Humans can actually do this snake baiting too with their hands, but not much eating on a snake to be worth developing the skill. I seem to remember people still did it, with defanged snakes to practice. Documentary in the 90s though, might not have been accurate, or my memory thereof.

The rattler doesn't have much endurance and caught out in the sun cannot control his body temperature. So he gets sluggish. The bird can keep at him until he wins. Notice how cautious the bird is in the beginning until the snake tires.
