Wow it's a long song! I've not heard this before, he is certainly a good story teller. I love the sound of the instruments too.

Awesome reaction Sue, thank you. My love of this song is mostly for the instrumentation and arrangement, the lyrics are a bonus. This is one of the reasons I love Al Stewart's songs. I just love the way he writes songs and his voice is so soothing. In regards to the lyrics, you are correct, it's based on WW2 events where the protagonist (Alexander Solzhenitsyn) at first is retreating as the Germans push the Russian back across Ukraine. Winter comes and the tides changes in favor of the Russians. The tiger reference are burning German Tanks. General Guderian was the leader of the Panzer armored division and his campaigns through Poland and France is where he earned his reputation of invincibility. When the tide changes the Russian fight their way to Berlin, at which time the protagonist is arrested, because at one time he was a German prisoner early in the war. This is the reason he was arrested because he surrendered to the Germans. You are talking about millions of people that fought for Russia that surrendered to the Germans were thrown into the gulag thanks to Stalin. This is where the story ends.

@JeromeDukes Thanks Jason. I appreciate the clarification as well. I thought it was based on true events. It just had that feeling...too much to just invent. Very cool song. I like the historical aspects and the musically very interesting 😊🩵

Oh very nice, some scottish folk rock. Such a huge back catalogue of music from this singer songwriter, but I think everyone just knows him from the year of the cat. He has also worked with some of the biggest names in the folk scene, doesnt get the recognition he deserves IMO.

@aravel5249 Hey A, I look forward to hearing more. I am one of those people who only knew 2 of his songs. Al has such a unique voice and way about him 🤗🩵

I know you probably get loads of requests but if you get a chance you should check out a band called "Ghost", a swedish band that is a modern day throw back to 80's rock in many ways. They are not everyones cup of tea, use a lot of religious iconography, but if you give them a chance the music is rocking.

Al Stewart is a lyrical genius. He tells vivid stories in a historical vein. This song tells the story of a Russian soldier’s experience throughout the German invasion of Russia, Operation Barbarossa. How they were overrun by blitzkrieg. It ends with him being sent into exile to the gulags in Siberia, because Stalin was so paranoid, that any of the soldiers in that first wave that got caught behind enemy lines, or fought with partisans during the rest of the war, were deemed not to be trusted.

@aravel5249 Thanks A I will give them a listen 😊

@@smffeb58 Absolutely true, in a way he reminds me of a softer "Sabaton" using history to tell a story through song/music.

Interesting song, with Al's typically easy-to-listen-to voice .. But not one I'd choose to listen to very often, partly because of its length .. You seem to have hit upon a bit of a Russian theme in recent videos, Sue ..First we have "Rasputin" ( Boney M ), followed by Russian born singer Regina Spektor with "My Dear Acquaintance", and now "Roads To Moscow" ( Al Stewart ) .. Hmmm, are you planning an operation to annex KZbin soon ??? 🤔😅. PS :- A quaint little song with a Russian theme is "Young 'n' Russian" by British group The Korgis .. It came out in 1979, and later that year they released the hit they are best known for, the excellent "Everybody's Got To Learn Sometime" .. But check out the cool Official Video for "Young 'n' Russian" if you have time .. If you know the influential hip-hop duo Atmosphere, they nicked the catchy bass riff from it and used it in their 2008 song "You".

Haha, I hadn't thought of it but you are right, Wayne. Apparently I was on a Russian kick this past week 😅 I never put that together. It is funny how this happens. No annexing YT though that just sounds like too much work 😂 I listened to Young n Russian. I had never heard that song before. In fact I don't know if I have heard the other song you mentioned. But YnR was really good...kind of airy with a cool electronic feel with great bassline pops. I think I will have to listen to more of this band. I don't recall hearing their name before. Thanks for that 😊❤

@@playitagainsue ▪Glad you enjoyed "Young 'n' Russian", Sue .. It's not widely known outside of fans of The Korgis .. But I heard it on alternative radio and immediately liked it .. If you do go on to check out their only major hit "Everybody's Got To Learn Sometime", I'd suggest the Official Video .. It's got great sound quality and a suitably reflective atmosphere .. Cheers, Wayne

@wayne_twentyfive I just listened to Everybody's...and I have heard it before. I forgot all about that song. It is a good one and a lot different than YnR. They are a cool sounding band 🤩💜
