If you have watched the channel for any amount of time, then you know that I love some easy roadside rockhounding, or in this case, easy roadside fossil hunting. This location was a great little stop on a much longer drive and if you're driving along I-15 in Montana, it's worth stopping at.

I live in Michigan. Crinoids, brachiopods, horn coral are all plentiful. They're beautiful polished.

Sometimes it pays to be old. I went to the town of Armstead as a child to visit some of mom's friends. Armstead is the town that was flooded when they built the reservoir. There was then and probably still is in the area that you were at, a hot springs that had goldfish in it year round. I remember not that long ago sitting on the beach by the reservoir and there were so many garnets the beach had a red glitter to it. The garnets were very small and everywhere. I went back last year with friends and there was not one! The new people to the area have picked up every single one. It seemed almost impossible to me. There was actually a couple there that day looking for some by the water. Further on down the road and on a eastern headed backroad, my daughter and I got out and climbed a small ridge to look at some plants. There was actually some brachiopods laying exposed on the top of the little hill. Clearly, they were fossils; but they don't seem like fossils when they aren't in rock. I don't understand how they hadn't disintegrated and just seems like a mystery to me. That is a fun, historical area with very interesting individuals. Love it.

Very cool finds. Reminds me of growing up in El Paso Tx where rock is abundant and used for most back yard “fences”. I used to take my dad’s hammer and flathead and knock out fossils in our backyard rock wall. Wish I still had them!

I use plastic medicine jars for smalls. The little bits I call fossil soup. Death plates look so nice cleaned and prepped for display.

I personally, am glad to see you out looking for fossils! I love rocks, minerals, gems, and fossils too! I know you are a little resistant to fossil collecting. But I hope you catch the bug! I started fossil preparation about a year ago and am having a blast with it!

Crazy how similar this is to what we have in Missouri. I wouldn't have thought so given the huge difference in elevation.

Those fossil plates are really cool but it's not worth prepping those. And do not throw those in acid! They will disappear! You can dig out the individual crinoid bits if you want to put them ina perky box but actually finding a segment of them is something worth displaying. But everyone is different! I love the death plates myself and have many of them on display. I'm kind of a fossil fanatic though! Lol! I like all kinds of fossils from the fossil fish at the green river formation to the plant fossils, I love different fossil woods and of course the trilobites, ammonites, baculites, and the brachiopods and the crinoids and the crinoids calyx! I love and collect stromatolites too! The ancient history of this planet is so fascinating to me! It's good to see you get into fossils a little bit anyways! Lol! That was a very worthy stop over, in my opinion! Thanks Jared and Sara❣️

For a second when you found that quartz pocket, I thought you found a brachiopod fossil like the ones I fine. Sometimes the brachipod geodes don't have the outer agate and just have the quartz points filling it up, but they are one of the less common brachiopods I find at my field. The big agate geode ones are super neat! I've only found about 8 fluorite ones so far, the corals are way more common to be filled with fluorite. There's a 400 yard unbroken chert plate with so many fossils, all quartz and chert with the occasional fluorite. Oh! and I'm pretty positive I've been finding common milky opal brachiopods too, which is neat considering Michigan supposedly doesn't have even common opal besides a very small deposit thats like a thin lair at some place one of the local geologists had told me about. I hadn't realized it's probably common milky opal until kinda recently when I was trying to figure out why some fluoresced while being clearly not fluorite, so I haven't gotten to show the geologist publishing on the fluorite fossils yet. I'm not 100% on the common opal yet, but it fits pretty well. I'm expecting the paper to take another 2 years at least though :( I guess he publishes in a journal that tends to have over a year wait or something. I'll admit I just kinda nodded my head while he told me that aspect, because I don't know journals like that. But his son recently published on another Michigan fluorite find, so they are great people for this. It's helpful because I guess due to fluorite having the highest electron affinity of all the elements (well, technically, I doubt it's relation to other elements is relevant, just how strong it is would be the important part) SEM testing for fluorite can be a tough job, since the laser moves the sample. Fortunately, his sons already versed on that! In the mean time, some pieces have been placed in hydrofluoric acid and left to sit for a while and remained unscathed, so no worries about missing a slow reacting calcite. Some pieces are at the A.E. Seaman museum now too!

Sometimes with death plates you can use water and a toothbrush, or pick/rub at spots with a bamboo skewer- same using water. Depends on how tough the rock is.

Couldn’t help but notice that beautiful green outback you’re driving. We have one also and have been all over the place in it. For us it has been the perfect vehicle for Pacific Northwest living and Rockhounding. Would love to own a wilderness edition sometime but for now our basic model does great! It may be a bit off-topic, but would love to hear your thoughts on taking your dog on rockhound adventures. Pros and cons,do’s and don’ts, tips might be an interesting and helpful topic for all of us, rockhounds that take our dogs along with us. Just saying. Be safe and have fun! 🐕

Ours is a 2023 that we bought in 2022 and before that, we had 2010 Outback, I agree with you that they are good. We looked at the Wilderness but didn't feel like it was really worth it in the long run. We do take Laika everywhere with us but it does have pros and cons, like we can't really go in places in the summer like a museum because we can't leave her in the car...etc.

Great spot to find fossils! Some of the death plates I collected have those bits scattered around. Are they creatures? Or really just fragments? 👍🏻

I wish you would travel east to the " Glacial pebble trail " I have been incredibly lucky on a beach just south of Boston. It's one know source of pet wood but there are many types of other exotic rocks an minerals. Blackrock beach Hull/Cohasset. Not great quality agates but it's a gorgeous beach.
