I've wondered why a number of his horses have C2C3 hyperflexion problems and now that I see the side reins I'm no longer in any doubt. Are we in the 80s? Is biomechanical science a complete mystery to this trainer. Correct collection and flexion comes from correct forward movement NOT long reins. "Side reins should only be used by the very experienced and the very experienced never need them".

those are not side reins, they are long reins, exact same contact as regular reins, except really long....side reins are fixed to a certian length and would do what your talking about, but long reins cannot as there is no fixed length to keep the horses head anywhere at any given time. any collection here is from the horse using his whole back and hind end engaging his entire body into a natural collection. Now did he use side reins to achieve this previously? possibly....but thats not what we are seeing here in this video.

I wish he wouldn't braid the tail. When you do that, the tail becomes a whip and becomes less of what it is made for like swatting flies or just expression of emotions.

When braided it ensures the whips and ropes dont get attached to it. Also this is indoors and no fly are about. Horses can still use their tails for expression when braided.
