Hey puddin, make sure when the trench is open, you run conduits for your service provider for internet and such. It will make your life easier in the future. (conduit from main road to beside your house electric meter). This makes it so the internet/tv provider does not need to dig up your yard to run their wire as well as prevents it from being broken in the future because if it is hand burried it is never deep enough)

It would also be nice if they'd let him dig his own trench to save some, but if it's OG&E or Canadian Valley Electric they probably won't let him do that. ONG let my parents dig the trench and lay the line for their gas service 20+ years ago and it saved them quite a bit.

I feel your pain. I recently had to get water to my house, in the end it cost me $7600. They had to bore under the road to get water to my side. Then they set the meter on my side of the road, and I had to hire a guy to run 1/4 of a mile of 2inch poly to get to my house. All I can say is, It is what it is. It was like 15 years ago that they bored under the road to get water on my side. There was two other guys splitting the cost with me and my part was 1600 and then it was 5200 to set the meter. Then I rented a trencher and ran 3/4 pex up to my house. I built my house from the ground up. Doing everything with the help of friends and family. I did all the electrical and plumbing and concrete and framing.

5200 for that length sounds pretty reasonable! I thought you were gonna say 25000! You know what, you have the transformer nice and close like that you can get a dedicated service to your shop in case it doesn’t have enough power in the future! You should check and see if it’s capable of running all the tools you’ll have! Also the guy you had doing the pond may be able to help with the trenching and stuff and save you a few bucks instead of using the actual utility!

Puddin, I live in a neighborhood and did not have a choice about transformer placement. Long story short, we have a large green transformer within 30 feet of my backdoor right in the middle of my backyard. So what I did is I went and bought fake greenery and zip tied them together and draped them over the top of the transformer for complete coverage. Then I planted shrubs all the way around it so that it couldnt even be seen in a couple of years when they grow to mature. Worked great, nobody can even tell it's there. It hasn't effected the performance of the transformer cause the power company hasn't come beating down my door and it's been 2 years now. Its a win win!

Just an idea, if you dont wanna look at a transformer in your front yard you could always build a peice of yard art to disguise it. i think you had a spare box truck box parked in the feild. you could always take the cab from one of your Datsons and replicate the King delivery as a dropped stationary automotive sculpture with the transformer hidden and accessible inside the box. And put a nice flower garden around it at least on the house side so your wife doesnt hate it quite so much.
