This week Steve embarks on an epic solo adventure to Scotland. His challenge is to drive the North Coast 500 in our fully electric ID Buzz Campervan. Will the doubters be right? What is the true range in a freezing Scottish winter? What is the true state of the UK charging infrastructure, are we really ready for a fully electric world?
Although our electric camper is well insulated, we didn’t install any additional heating in The Buzz when building it, so see how Steve copes with keeping warm whilst sleeping inside as temperatures drop to below freezing.
He discovers a fantastic pub stop for his first night, but things so take a change on the second day as roads are closed, diversions around country roads take many more hours putting a strain on the vehicles battery and just as he needs to charge the van he comes across electric car charging stations that simply won’t work!

I was similar initially when my kids were at Uni I had 450 mile round trips. Now they finished it made it easier, I initially had a Hybrid for a year or so and when I looked it I would have only needed to have charged away once. Took the plunge last October and I've only had to charge away from home once and that was when I went up to the NEC.

Morning Steve, as an ev sceptic, it is good to see an honest review of the realities of ev ownership when travelling beyond normal everyday use. Can’t help but think the charger companies aren’t helping the case, with out of order issues and what appears to be a loyalty card requirement at some. Would be interesting to see time lost to charging, money spent while waiting for charging factored into the final cost per mile. Looking forward to following the rest of your adventure with an open mind to ev practicality.

We did the NC500 in April this year. Weather was super kind to us. Used Charge Scotland Chargers, only had one fail us. We did charge more regularly with our Niro EV than you are and never at any stage did we suffer range issues. Wonderful trip using hotels or bed and breakfast locations. The cost of electricity was comparable with petrol cost and that was travelling from Devon over a 2 week period. The main saving is charging at home prior to the start but of course that only covers the first 300 miles, which cost us about £5.

He made it stressfull by still having the ICE driver mentality of letting the tank get as low as he thinks he can get away with. I. Sure he wouldnt run a diesel camper till there was only 10 miles range remaining ....crazy. He could have stopped at the charger before, no more time taken, no anxiety and left at 80% charge thus co siderably less time waiting for a full charge. As he mentioned in the video, charging from 80% to full takes longer than charging to 80%, so bonkers waiting for a full charge, not necessary. Badly planned and implemented causing him a lot of unnecessary wasted time and cost. He could have saved a lot of cost by choosing the cheaper rates (such as Tesla)rather than just stopping at the nearest one because he had to. A bad strategy to adopt.

@David-bl1bt I was so impressed with our EV, i gave it to the wife as a local shopping trolley, tied to it's octopus go, cheap overnight 7kw home charger range, which like a milk float, as they were originally designed for, they are good at. Our EV has lost 42% battery storage capacity through degradation and 5 battery bars out of 12 in only slightly more than 40 k miles. It is 30 kwhr, you can guess the rest. We couldn't have kept it without having several other ice vehicles in the house for longer journeys, two of them have ranges of 650 miles. One of our cars is 17 years old and another 20 years old, still with the range they were bought with at around twice the age of the EV. We also have a lwb diesel campervan and two high power petrol motorbikes all working perfectly as designed.

Your channel popped up on my timeline this morning and as happy campers ourselves, decided to sit back and watch. Fascinating is all I can say. Your insight into life as an electric camper man pulls no punches and I can imagine how stressful the journey was from the Metal Bridge Inn to Inverness was for you. I know that route well and I’m now looking forward to the next part. Subscribed as well. Many thanks for sharing this. It answers so many questions on how you would plan a trip of this ‘magnitude’ in an electric vehicle and the many pitfalls you’ve had to endure along the way.

Really enjoyed this, moved from Buckinghamshire to Scotland a few months ago. The scenery takes my breath away. I think the ev vehicles are great if you’re just popping around town but the range anxiety on longer trips would be awful, you can literally go an hour or two parts of Scotland and not see a fuel station. It’s not like someone can give you a lift with a jerry can to get petrol! It’s a shame there aren’t power bank type things you can pre charge up as emergency back up

Interesting first video on your trip, my initial thoughts are still that we are not ready for EV's for this sort of purpose yet. Ok for daily commute, but distance and camping, no way. The fun of the trip, which I like as much as the destination, is taken away with the mileage anxiety and time taken for charging and the inconvenience of it. Second thing is the Buzz seems just doable for you as a single user, but for both of you to share that space in the winter would be too tight in my opinion. Also extra weight of second person, clothes and bits and bobs would diminish the mileage yet more. It would be difficult to pre book sites to as we seen with the hold ups you are not guaranteed to get to your planned destination when you want to. But great that you are doing an honest review to show us these flaws.

We did the NC500 with our Tesla Model 3 and caravan in summer '22. Amazing trip, more than enough charging on the route so we had no worries whatsoever. We did have some problems with the Chargeplace Scotland chargers as a lot of the chargers were not connected to the app, so we had to ring the service to activate the charger. Having the physical card solves this problem completely. Our complete trip of about 3500km's cost us around 60 euros for charging the car, a lot of the Chargeplace chargers were free at that time, and we also charged at camp sites.

Just watched your journey and I'm sorry to say I couldn't deal with the anxiety of running out of juice in a remote part of Scotland or anywhere else tbh. Working in the industry I can honestly say the majority of people don't want to move to fully electric for this reason, our weather in winter saps the charge much faster when you have the heater and other stuff running, and getting stuck in a traffic jam only adds to the anxiety.

I'm glad you were honest about range. Claims of 300 miles plus now seem ridiculous. That's why iD Bus sales are pitiful and VAG are on the verge of bankruptcy. In 2018 in my Citroën Relay L4 H2 3.5 ton camper I did Derby to Duncansby Head across to Durness, down to Scourie then to Ullapool then to Fort William and to oban then back home on 3 tanks of diesel. Total distance around 1600 miles. Around £80 each tank. It cost around 15p per mile. £58 first charge for 193 miles is 30p. Ps May I suggest if you're going to use the iD Bus in winter get yourself a cheap Chinese diesel heater. Mine uses around 6 litres of red diesel per 12 hours at full blast 28 degrees. Drop it down to 18 degrees and it uses around 2 litres per 12 hours. No drain on your range and you can quite happily sit in just your pants in -10 temperature.

I reckon it works out equivalent to about 30mpg. Seems pretty similar to diesel vw t6 mpg. Also I suppose I would also have to factor in the 180 min miles range it had charged cheap as chips at home for around £6.80. Depends how far you go I suppose but doing a 360 mile round trip then would cost around £65. Not bad going and great torque and quiet; dunno, I think I’d find it tempting compared to a diesel version personally. I understand that Tesla charging is about a third less also, which would positively increase to mpg comparison. They’ll be great value used though! Hmmm

Well done Steve, a very honest vlog about your journey, we love it up there. Don’t think electric is for me, my IBS would be in overdrive worrying about Electric Charging Stations or rather lack of working ones. Can’t wait for the next one. Take Care Steve and good luck 😊

Most interesting, and the Buzz is a cool vehicle. The journey while great fun often revolves around planning a stopping point to charge limiting the options to explore or change direction if you feel like it. When I travelled Scotland and the Outer Hebrides a couple of years ago with a caravan in tow, refuelling was an afterthought. I'm travelling from my house near Brighton to Inverness next week (without the caravan) 630 miles without stopping for fuel, as much as I appreciate the positives of EV's, I'd miss that.

Not been a big fan of ⚡ electric and this video has just made it clear that this country is still not geared up for electric, I couldn't be doing with the constant fear of running out or if the charger is going to be working when you get there 🤔 lost count how many times you had to charge just from Milton Keynes and didn't get to Inverness, think I'll be sticking to my nice sounding BMW M3 V8 🤣👍

Great content as usual. It really is a pain about them chargers and time of the year doesn't help, albeit some aspects of this concept are priceless. Wouldn't deter me for how often I would actually do this sort of trip but them tight roads would be enough to put me off! All the best!

We stayed at the Metal Bridge Inn a few weeks ago (and parked exactly where you parked) and it was great. Excellent facilities for a pub stop over and the food available varies with day of the week (e.g. I think Tuesday night is curry night).

Im sorry Steve, but £58 to do 193 miles, its ridiculously expensive, all you have done is reinforced my decision not to go all electric , almost an hour wait and the stress of chargers working, etc, etc. Will stick to my hybrid . Great informative vlog as always though, 👍

Good luck Steve, what your vlog demonstrates so far is that this country (UK) is not ready for EV,s, charging points not working etc and the reliance on tech and apps etc, how will the older generation cope. I’ll stick to my diesel and maybe invest in some shares in the AA and RAC 😀

I did 800km in my Buzz over the weekend. Fully loaded - 4 adults and 1 child, dog and luggage. 8 degrees and some rain. Cost €80 to charge with Ionity. 3 charges in total. No real difference to the cost of diesel. I charge at home 99% of the time (average 8c). EVs can work if you schedule stops with meal/break. Not for everyone but choice is great 👍

This proves how we are being ripped off by organisations taking advantage of the EV hype. The price of charge is equivalent to about £1.90 per litre. EV’s will never take off while they are this high. I understand it maybe a one off but with a smaller range than most IC cars more chargers are needed and be a lot cheaper. Enjoyed the video Steve looking forward to seeing your park ups and how you coped with the weather.

Please be mindful of the really low drink drive limit in Scotland. One drink will put you over the limit, if you have a couple the night before there’s a chance you’ll still be over the limit.

Great video. Worth considering: 1. First 180 miles of the trip, by charging at home at £0.07 per kWh, would cost around £5.00 - how many ICE vehicles can achieve that? 2. Range in very cold weather is reduced by 10% - 20% 3. Using Tesla Superchargers only will greatly reduce charging costs AND THEY USUALLY WORK! 4. Best to plan recharges around 20% to allow for unforeseen delays 5. Using the vehicle battery for night heating, cooking etc. obviously affects range Charge place Scotland is the worst imaginable EV charging network and should be avoided as much as possible! 💣

Just found your channel. I am one of those climate change doubters. However, as an engineer I love technology and support less pollution to the environment. I have been watching the green energy being forced on people with ridiculous time lines. Always thought 2050 was a better target than the 2030 being enforced. Great campsite at the metal bridge. I would be interested in an electric camper in the future as long as it can be charged by solar off grid. Love the design of your camper and Knights did an amazing job. Safe travels and looking forward to the next video.

£59 to do 188 miles, crazy, that will fill my tank up and give me a range of just over 500 miles. It’s a crazy system. Was just thinking, wait until they start charging road tax and pay per mile for EV vehicles, it is going to be SO expensive.
