Excellent info on Clayton. I have had the 3000 Clayton in my Vito Conversion Van for last 2 years and its a powerful dream especially for my coffee machine. Coffee anywhere any time too. Also the unit can jump start your vehicle too if you run down the vehicle battery. I have just sold my Van with the clayton unit in it and it made money ontop of the cost. It was the Installer who said to go for the Cayton over the normal Victron. I have got a MoTo 8.7m and its till surprisingly under powered with a 1800 w.inverter. I jsy doubled the battery power however on storage. So I was going to replace the current inverter with Victron however thinking what you have all been saying and getting rid of Gas hob which it came with, Ill probably go for Calyton in the gas locker now as ideal space and do an electric hob. Keep up the good work, maybe see you on the road sometime Im sure, Our first month road trip is July in France on the new MoHo, cant wait.

A very interesting video. The Clayton Power unit looks very well made and is probably extremely reliable. What surprised me was the high price, compared to e.g. an Anker Powerstation. Almost 3 times as expensive per kWh of storage. I am wondering what justifies such a big difference?

It’s more comparable to a separate Victron setup rather than a consumer power generator.

Two questions. Why did you go for the Cargo and not the car? And your cargo does not have an up-and-over back door?
@RoamingRadfords7 ай бұрын
The car is more expensive and we would have had to rip out the seats and additional trim etc. just to throw them away. We originally ordered it for work as a basic van, had we ordered it as a conversion we would have probably ordered it with a tailgate instead of barn doors, but it turns out the barn doors do have some advantages, so we’re not that disappointed.
@davidoakley38127 ай бұрын
I get what you both are saying but it's like what I said it's not for everyone and as for the second car question I would say that van with conversion must be close to £70.000 that's a lot of money for a second car but it's your money I personally wouldn't of spent that kind of money still love your channel like watching you guys I'll leave it with I hope you manage to get the most out of it

Well if it was me I’d put it down as a company vehicle, for tax purposes, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Steve hasn’t done that. All these types of vehicles have their drawbacks in wet and cold conditions, they are fine when it’s sunny and warm, but when you have three days if rain then you’ll never know where to put the wet clothes when you return to it. But sitting here in a campsite in Italy watching a few people with these types of van, you can see the faff when they arrive and when the leave, unloading and then having to repack it so precisely, so I wouldn’t have the patience, and I’ve hit better things to do with my life then mess about that much. But hey it makes good content for KZbin.

Great vid.

Nice video and a fantastic project. Not sure I am on the same page as you re weights though. I thought manufacturers only generally made an allowance for the driver of 70-75kg in MIRO figures, other occupants and a heavier drivers, I believe, comes off the payload with the key weight being GVW/MAM?
@RoamingRadfords7 ай бұрын
Manufacturers generally don’t, although VW do allow 75kg for the driver. We have 400kg of payload left after the conversion and I can assure you we both don’t weigh anywhere near that.

Fantastic conversion, love some of the space saving ideas. You say that the Clayton takes power from the 77kwh EV 😮battery but does it do this directly or is it via the vehicles 12v battery? You mention a maximum charge rate of 30amps how many watts does this put into the Clayton when the ignition is on? I would estimate 400 ?
@RoamingRadfords7 ай бұрын
Thank you. I understand it’s been wired into the panel at the back of the van and I believe it’s straight from the big battery. Your estimate is pretty spot on, it’s just over 400w going in with the ignition on.
@andrewspicer34937 ай бұрын
Thanks, I think your 400w is actually coming from the Buzz’s DC to DC converter which is via the 12v system. The Buzz will give aporox 14v when the ignition is on x 30a = 420w ish. If only VW did the same as The likes of Hyundai, Kia and VW and actually allowed you to use the HV battery directly via a in built inverter then there would be no need for a Clayton.
@RoamingRadfords7 ай бұрын
I guess that would make sense since I need the ignition on to make it work. Yes it would also be nice to have a bidirectional V2L like Kia and a few other manufacturers do. Hopefully this will come in future vehicles.

It can’t, it’s not currently possible to do that with the current hardware. The only work around currently is to plug the 3 pin car charger into the Clayton and for the solar to charge the Clayton, which works, but is inefficient.

when i was a converter i used to get asked a lot about converting other brand base vans apart from t4s and t5s 6 etc. My honest opinion was always dont! if your putting north of 15k and beyond into that van then you are investing into the base van. The conversion price is the same regardless, but resale will hit you further down the road. i saw converted vans that had been involved in accidents... fittings ripped out of the old cheap ikea kitchen cabinets done on the cheap by Bob luck and future insurance claims. where am i going? my down the road advice would be, well if you have 95k in hard earned cash, then play safe with your conversion and get those nice tdi lumps under the bonnet good for 300k miles. love your videos and your nice people, but i think people watching should just be a bit cautious with their hard earned money. If your loaded then hey have a party and have a good time. Some people buy leisure vehicles as a hobby and just a spare cash play thing. For others its their lifetimes savings. Which is why i was always upfront and honest to anyone considering converting a van
