Canonically, Kirby characters retain abilities from previous games. Magolor has all of his old boss abilities but weakened, MetaKnight still has cloning and boulder manipulation, and King Dedede is ludicrously strong as a remnant of Swole Dedede. This carries on in Dedede’s theme, keeping his recent past intact.

One of my favorite things about King Dedede is that, unlike pretty much any other recurring big baddie, Dedede’s theme is never changed, they just add more to what’s there. Bowser, Ganondorf, King K. Rool, even Wario, never have one theme that stays. Dedede’s consistency at being his best self is what makes him so much cooler.
