Please note this video was just an experiment. I am fully aware of the usual way to cook roast potatoes. And apologies for the dark lighting in some shots.
This is my attempt at doing Bald Foodie Guys experimental video he did a few months back when he made roast potatoes from tinned potaoes that were from Aldi. I got it to work but I should have par boiled them a bit longer maybe and also rough them up prior to adding them to the oil. Probably would have worked much better then I reckon. So if you give this a go, try roughing them up first before putting them in the oil.
Here's the link to Bald Foodie Guys video that gave me the inspiration to do the one I did as a follow up.
• Does it work?? AIR FRY...
Cheers everyone. 👍.

Tinned potatoes taste the best when you cook them in the tin over an open fire in the woods, then eat them with a pen-knife straight out of the tin. They are extra enjoyable when it's all you've got and it's cold out.

A lot of effort for potatoes that work out more expensive than fresh potatoes, but an interesting experiment and a good end result. I bet they would have been even nicer with the real deal though, The problem with tinned potatoes is that they are - out of necessity - waxy potatoes, so they don’t go soft like starchy potatoes do. It’s possible to get some sort of crunch on them but they will never have the fluffy texture and glassy crunch of a Maris piper or a King Edward.

Hi Potatoe Pirate. Thanks for your feedback. I think I could have got them to come out better if I had of roughed them up prior to putting them in the oil. The way I did in the video where I did it the other way round made the potatoes too slippery so they were bound not to rough up - something I only realised after I did it. But the whole thing was just an experiment to see if I could do it using tinnes tatties - but now I know where I went wrong I will try again - in a follow up video hopefully. Cheers.

@@milesfb I have actually tried the same thing with tinned potatoes, although I boiled mine to try and wash off the tinny taste. You can make tinned potatoes taste half decent if you submerge them in liquid (curry for example) or season and roast them for long enough, but they still have a kind of ‘dead’ flavour that doesn’t quite hit the mark. I think it’s fun to play around with stuff like this but if you’re boiling or pressure cooking your potatoes then it definitively makes sense to buy fresh potatoes. The Aldi wonky fresh potatoes are 4.2p per 100g while these (drained) tinned potatoes work out at over over twice as much (more than 10p per 100g).

Can't see the point of parboiling as they have been pressure cooked to death in the can ! I just open and drain, dry, then drop in air fryer, spray with oil of choice and season towards the end of cooking with flavours of your choice, easy. No messing around with bowls garlic crushers or any other stuff that needs cleaning up. You truly made a meal of this. 🙈

Love these potatoes. Drain them. Chop them so the pieces are all roughly same size - spray them with oil, sprinkle with salt, garlic granules, paprika and rosemary if you have it and cook in the air fryer for 15 mins at 180%. Crisp and gorgeous. Non of the pressure cooker, which will just overcook them.

I absolutely love tinned potatoes deep fry'd. With tomato sauce over them. stopped doing them because the way they explode. Too dangerous. Even with a lid on my PTSD came out from burning my kitchen down when i was younger. I think they explode because they've been sitting , absorbing the water so much. Definitely a different taste than normal roasties. But so nice.

We call tinned potatoes "emergency potatoes" in our house. We've used them for roasties when they're the only ones in the house and they turn out alright. However a word of warning, they have a habit of exploding, as witnessed by the scar on my right forearm still there some 30 odd years later!

Cheers Gareth. Thanks for approving my video. Your experiment worked for me with the extra step of pressure cooking. But it was still difficult to rough / fluff them up because of their spherical shape. I maybe shouldn't have added the oil prior to shaking them. I'll continue to experiment a bit more with them. All the best 👍.

How long did this video take to make including washing up etc ? I’m gonna say about an hour and a half all the pots pans frier pressure all for tiny amount of potatoes. No wonder your so thin 😂how long for a pot noodle 30 min only joking 😂 I would pour out of tin put in microwave with water for few mins if they break a little that’s ok there roughed up. Then drain little oil in air frier to get crispy.

Hi Dino. Thanks for watching my vlog. In total you are spot on. It was about an hour and a half.to make it. You will never get fluffy roasties from tinned pots because they are made from new potatoes which don't have the same texture as old potatoes which propper roast spuds are traditionally made from. Good compromise although a bit of a faff.
