I don't mind the matchstick blinds he has. Lamps and a rug will make a huge difference. A potted tree would make a big difference, and make it look much move lively. The black bedspread is almost as bad as the florescent light, but with the patterns and colors he suggested for the curtains, would help a lot. Maybe a duvet cover that blends better?

GREAT roasting video! Liam, Get COMMAND hooks to hang art. They will not harm the walls at all. There's a huge variety to pick from to meet your needs. (I'm a veteran, so get living in barracks can sux). A tension rod for a window treatment may be a great option as you won't have to mount any hardware. The best rule for how wide you need the curtains is triple the width measurement. So if the window is 48", x 3 = 144" total width needed. I'd also consider swapping out your bed spread to something less busy. Perhaps a solid color that is close to the color of the wood veneer furniture drawers. That'll make it look more intentional. Great idea to contact Nick for advice.
@wakingtheworld2 ай бұрын
Yep, agree. Despite restrictions, there is still potential for his space to look amazing.

Specifically the command hooks with a plastic backing and a metal prong for the hook. They are so much more versatile and easier to remove than the clunky plastic ones.
@rockshot1002 ай бұрын
I agree. And 3X is ideal, but depending on the fabric, 2.5X is minimum. Yes, the black is too much and is the focal point of the room, and doesn't fit with everything else. I suggested a duvet cover, in the fabrics he suggested for drapes. Don't think he can remove that florescent light, that is the biggest problem, the lamps will add dimension to the room. The rug idea is the best, but he will have to probably buy a vacuum. The rug should have enough of the orange of the doors so they look intentional. I am sure he cannot paint those doors, and they are ugly.

Military barracks are a lot like dorm rooms in terms of what can and cannot be changed… they just get a lot more space to work with. I spent my teen and college years living near the Naval Sub School & Navy base & was friends with a number of sailors so I feel like I’ve got some cred to make some comments. Getting creative with space allocation really helps. I had friends who set their bed up to function as a bit of a sofa during the day & created a living room & then created a separate office & dining space. Others brought in room dividers, Japanese style futons, floor cushions, Kallax units… whatever possible to divide up the space to create a living zone and a sleeping zone. I think those set ups worked best, usually with a Kallax acting as a room divider with storage and display spaces. Dressers become a tv console & a nightstand. I even know a delightful female sailor who used 3M strips & flat sheets to make a fabric wall behind her bed. She put the 3M strips on the wall, Velcro on the sheets after she’d tacked her pleats in place, and affixed the loop side of the Velcro to the 3M strips. This way, she could take the sheet down to wash it. You can also use shower curtains. This is a dorm hack that works really well.

I love this so much!!!! Nick's not mean at all but he still gets his point across. A grey day, yuch mood, then found this. Yes! Also, I would love if Nick would use some sort of computer program to actually edit the photos so we could imagine his suggestions better. But I'm sure he's very busy already.

49yr old artist from Spain over here! I absolutely adore your channel, and your wit, plus you and I have almost the same taste 😊. For the viewers who can’t fix nails on their walls, I strongly recommend using command hooks, they work like a charm and won’t ruin the wall when removed. They come in a variety of sizes and have instructions for weight. I have quite a few paintings hung that way in my all dry walled home.

"I know you're a college student because you're using a Kallax as a media console" Me: uh, I'm 49 And my place screams broke single person. I received my Kallax media console 8 years ago after the moving crew (parents) decided it would be better than the TV wall mount bracket. But it almost pairs ok with the Kallax dining room sideboard.

I'm wondering if Liam could somehow create more defined spaces, with the bed placed closer to the window (and air conditioning/heating unit), put the dresser on the other side, reorient the computer table employ the coffee table (?) that's at the end of the bed and get a room screen from IKEA (very portable so he can take it with him when he leaves). Put the room screen between the "bedroom" area and the computer/media area. I don't know if this would work out in terms of the dimensions of the room vs. the coffee table, etc. but he might give it a try.

As a vet, that’s a huge barracks room! Back in my soldiering days that would be at least a double. I say make sure you have a rug. Most older barracks get so cold. (I was in WW2 barracks).
@rockshot1002 ай бұрын
He would be ridiculed for hanging curtains, the matchstick blinds are not that bad. A huge rug with the orange color of the doors and a different bedspread would make a big difference. And a few lamps and forget about the florescent light, nobody would even notice. He would be more comfortable, without any grief.
@dominaevillae282 ай бұрын
@rockshot100 Room darkening curtains should be ok. They are available plain and any dorm rat should appreciate being able to keep out the sun to sleep in, particularly shift workers. Not everyone has those great metal German blinds like I had 🙂

Kallax is actually pretty nice if you work it a bit and are crafty. I have a craft room in my place that doubles as my work office- I hand painted fabric drawers for one kallax with art from my favorite artist (Hokusai, took pieces from the same series so they would fit together). Plus there are now drawer inserts and doors you can now add- I added drawers to a second and painted it, changed the knobs to something nicer. Whole room is accents of navy against tan, set up so that when I sit at my desk behind me is rather tidy and formal for Zoom calls... but while I work I get to see in front of me all my favorite artworks and piece I made for the space, which is nice.

And I am in Fort Wayne! Love these videos where Nick gives very specific ideas for actual spaces. Just finished renovating one of my bedrooms into a craft studio with 2 wonderful work areas, task lighting, tons of storage...I love the feminine, light-blue-with-white results. Pretty and functional! Happy early retirement to me!

76 year old from the U.K. here. I live in a 3 bed terraced home that is crammed full of stuff. Art, ceramics, books, inexplicable things that I have dragged home. It would cause Nick a breakdown, and it’s made me question why I love his videos - after all I don’t want to emulate his style. It’s his sly humour and common sense I like. Our tastes might be different but I can still pick up useful tips from him.

Would love to see how Nick deals with curtains over radiators, must send a photo. At least I don't have nipple lights, but my rugs aren't big enough to put two legs of the chairs on, nor can I afford anything larger. More international options, styles and budgets would be lovely, send photos people. From wet S. W WALES UK (54yr old female and 2 cats😂)
