Well, well, well! 2023 is shaping up to be the year of wheel guns. We've got revolvers that are so tiny they'd make a mouse blush, and we've got ones so massive you won’t need a rifle.
Some of these bad boys aren't even new, just variations - models with longer barrels, shorter barrels, different grip frames, finishes, et cetera. But -- it’s not all sunshine and rainbows in wheel gun land.
Join me in this video as I roast 12 of the newest revolvers released so far in April of 2023!

I don’t plan on buying from another nation no matter their currency! I considered a Rossi 44 mag lever gun, but saved the additional $300 and bought Henry. It’s all a matter of opinion and what someone likes. Just because someone disagrees with me doesn’t make them wrong.

I think the Henry & the Diamondback Birdsheads are sexy AF. I think the Colt Lightning has one of the coolest looks ever, & the Henry & Sidekick took a similar profile & made it even cooler by centering up the trigger guard making it more symmetrical, along with giving it a swing-out cylinder & ejector making it basically perfect IMO. With the Sidekick, 22mag isn't horrible, but with the DBX being what Diamondback is known for, not making it the first commercial 5.7 revolvers when 5.7 is all the rage is a massive missed opportunity. they'd have to make their own moon clips, but they'd have the market cornered. Something like 22 Hornet would be fun too. The Henry though is damn near perfect, 357 is a great caliber, love the brass, the grips, everything looks great with it I even like the undercut & simple barrel. Since they already have Colt & Smith design cues, I think the only fun addition to tie the old meets new together would be a Merwin & Hulbert pocket-army style skull cracker frame extension or if the aftermarket made a modified Iver Johnson knuckle ring grip extension. either of those would really set em off & make them a lil more special.
@ResidentGunNut

Well... I guess from a certain angle, I can appreciate the Henry with a birdshead grip, if only because of that thin look that matches the thin barrel. But the square grip version has to have a rib and full underlug imo. A revolver chambered in 5.7x28 would be awesome, but one in .22 Hornet would be fantastic. I've been waiting for Taurus to remake their Raging Bull in .22 Hornet for ages but it doesn't look like they're going to. As for the grip extensions, never heard of them so I looked them up. Yeah, I see what you're saying.

I mean yeah, to each his own. But it is the consensus. I honestly think it's $900 for two reasons: 1, brand/reputation; and 2, high polish+blued finish. These days, many people can't care less about either. I would rather pay $700 for the same revolver with no high polish and a melonite finish.

I think Henry was too lazy. What they should have done was add a rib and full underlug to the square butt version. The birdshead grip version without a rib and underlug looks great to me. I would also be curious to know how good the square butt version would look with a rib, a half underlug, and a 6-inch barrel. It would probably look more aesthetically pleasing than a S&W 27

The price tag of the Ruger Redhawk and the Colt Anaconda make sense because they both can handle loads that would damage or potentially grenade the S&W 29/629. That alone earns the Anaconda as well as the Redhawk a clear victory. I love my 629 but it's a weaker design. Why S&W doesn't change the design is a mystery but they seem content being the weak link.

I ... REALLY ... feel that Henry dropped the ball here and completely negated their customer base. Since their entire history has been dedicated to making lever action (and in some cases pump action) rifles. So their customers are, at least in part, interested in quality "old school" type firearms. With Ruger nearly stopping production of new Vaquero's and Blackhawk's recently in favor of the Wrangler and other items, it seems to me that Henry would have been able to quickly pick up a niche market need for a Colt Clone type sidearm. Especially among the SASS crowd. Now .. the revolver they've produced may be a quality piece, it still "for me" lacks much to be desired. An un-shrowded ejector rod. And the head on the ejector rod is oversized so a notch had to be cut out of the bottom of the barrel to fit almost seems to me to be an overlooked design flaw that no one wanted to re-engineer once it was realized so defacing the barrel seemed to be an easier design fix. I think their new Big Boy revolver would have been a good 2nd edition run, after the Single Actions had hit the market. Others may feel different and that's fine .... but I just feel they honestly didn't do their research before producing this new line.
