My son got sick in England. I took him to an NHS doc. I tried to pay, since we are not citizens, but they said "we have no real mechanism for that, just put a tenner in a charity box. No joke. He just had an ear infection, but they still said to bring him back in a couple of days.

Not surprising. My cousin was visiting from the States and needed an antibiotic for a throat infection. When he got his prescription from the doctor he stopped at reception to sort out the cost of the visit and the receptionist just waved him away with an 'awk away on you go'. He couldn't believe it. I don't even think he had to pay for the antibiotic in the end as prescriptions are free in NI.

We also have different latitudes in different states and we have different time zones between the states. Go figure. In Michigan, you can see the northern lights. In San Francisco, it is misty in the summer depending on the hills in the neighborhood. The internet lets you verify moonrise and moonset and its phases along with sunrise and sunset times by location. You can look up constellations. London is cloudy but ideal for golf, cycling, tennis, hiking... 12 months of the year. Also, on Dec 21st Sun up at 08:00, SD at 16:00. By April 30 that is 05:30/20:30 (15 hours). On 2Wheels Paying for our healthcare in the UK is done through general taxation, someone earning approx £21000 gross per year would pay about £4500 in income tax and National insurance. The more you earn obviously the more you pay, people who earn less than about £12000 a year don't pay tax at all and yet just like those who earn £21000 or £1,000,000 receive healthcare in exactly the same way, we never need to take money to the hospital and are never judged by our financial situation. Of course there are private health companies also but only the rich will generally use these as they can be faster, say if you needed a hip replacement then on the NHS you could wait up to about six months but done privately a few days or weeks.

The NHS is by far the single best thing about the UK, my mum and dad both had preventative surgery as a result of certain screening programs and are alive and well today. Also my sister had very serious asthma from a young age and has received nothing but excellent care up to the present day. It's also 100% true that a hospital or doctor's practice would never turn you away because of your nationality or financial situation, it just doesn't happen. There is an £8.50 charge per course of prescription medication like antibiotics but that's a flat rate and only applies if you take it at home and it's minor like a chest cough or a minor infection. And you only have to pay it if you earn over a certain amount per year, if you are in any education or training and stuff then it's free too. To make it clear, any treatment and medicine given in hospital or if you have a condition is completely free of charge regardless of your situation. This includes stuff like managing long term conditions in people that costs thousands in meds but the money is always there. We are so lucky to live in the developed world with good healthcare. Peace to all.

Azrael "disappointed at how susceptible they are to manipulation and how easily theyre distracted by their media" - I think this is the biggest problem. I'm a massive troll so i've argued with loads of people. One thing i've noticed with Americans is you'll tend to hear ideas posited in a very homogeneous fashion. I'm not saying that the UK is much better. It's always easy to distinguish a Sun/ Guardian/ Daily Mail/ Telegraph/ Times reader. But I get the sense that Americans either don't consume enough balanced media or that they don't thrash out ideas through discussion with peers. It could even be something else. I've never visited so it's hard to discern.

Azrael I’ve always been fairly realistic about America’s stance in the world but I think this is slightly cynical. Comedians exaggerate stereotypes and while there are genuinely ignorant Americans, there’s just as many not running their mouth. I don’t live in the greatest country in the world, but I do know how blessed I am to live in a country as advanced as mine. We got a lot to work on but hey man, a lot of us do realize it. All countries do really, nothing but love from your man the States!

I think orthodonture is much less common in your neck of the woods. To Americans, British teeth may look "bad," when they are really just natural. Our culture doesn't care if you're bankrupt and dying, you just need bright white movie star teeth.

Ok a quick thing on UK healthcare. When we say our healthcare is free technically that’s a lie. By free we mean Free at the Point of Use. Similar to the police, fire brigade, schools, roads etc they are free when we use them but they are paid for through our taxes. We simply feel that it’s the most sensible way to ensure that everyone is covered and that everyone can use it when they need it.

He will have been registered as non uk and what should happen is the US will then be asked to pay for the care. I say should but a lot of the time it doesn’t happen. It depends who and how the person is registered on the system. There are a lot of different categories.

Dentists are essentially free, again apart from private or if you need a tooth out at 1am in the morning..eg my usual NHS dentist is free, but when i wanted one out at an all night dentist (often not NHS),i forked out £100

Dennet Lane there are studies that show a way to take years off is to whiten, polish your teeth :) Of course people can and do go too far.. too many people don’t notice how stained there teeth get with coffee, tea, wine, juices or smoking 🤢etc... through the years, it really doesn’t add to attractiveness. Kids teeth aren’t usually that color. So, neither ultra white or discolored is natural or most attractive. Clean, polished, unstained teeth look healthiest and most attractive. Of course, what matters most is someone’s attitude, heart and soul :)

I know this will be mentioned numerous times in the comments but dentists are not a part of the NHS and they are painfully expensive, the last time i had to have a really small filling it cost me around £50. A lot of people actually put off going to the dentist until they feel like they really have to.

Of course there are NHS dentists! 82% have a NHS contract (2015 stats). I go every six months for a check up and don't pay a penny. All treatment for under 18's, unemployed and pensioners is free. A charge is levied at the waged, but it's massively subsidised when compared to private practitioners. However, I do wish that treatment was free, at the point of need, for all. It would cost a tax increase of a penny in the pound, but, the government hasn't the balls to increase taxes - even for a good cause. Time for a new government?!
