John Logie Baird FRSE was a Scottish inventor, electrical engineer, and innovator who demonstrated his working television system on 26 January 1926. He went on to invent the first publicly demonstrated colour television system, and the first viable purely electronic colour television picture tube. thats where the Logie's name comes from.

The Logie is named after John Logie Baird, a Scottish inventor and one of the various inventors that lead towards the invention of television. Sally at the time of the clip was in the TV show "All in the Family" The married daughter of Archie and Edith Bunker she was married to Michael (Rob Reiner) and the four of them lived in the same NY home, it was based on the British "Till death do us part". The bag was a complimentary bag Qantas would give to overseas passengers back in the 70's.

Norman's humour is all built around his characters naivety. He is not bitter. Norman is unworldly. His brilliance was that he listens, takes the cues presented by his guests and turns them into a piece of gold. 'You should use an electric razor." Her response was triggered by the beautifully measured pause, and concerned confusion "I do.". Cue Sally's spontaneous, incredulous, laughter. She gave him the opening. He responded with the comedians main tool, an unexpected destination for the thought. It's like Eric & Ernie, Lewis and Martin, Brooks and Reiner (Carl Reiner's son Rob was Sally's husband in All in the Family). Norman's brilliant distinction is creating the space for the interview guest, to replace Ernie et al, to be the straight man.

Gunston eventually got his Gold Logie. Absolute legend! This is one of those clips I always return to when I'm feeling in the need of a good pick-up. Logies do sound terrible, but John Logie Baird claimed to invent the first television. Those flight bags were synonymous with travel back in the 70s (Aussies loved 'em). Garry McDonald (The guy who played Norman) is smart as a whip, and usually did a lot of research before interviews. Sadly, the stress of bringing back Australia's little bleeder for another TV show led to a breakdown. One of the best.

Back in the day, if anyone in Australia bought an airline ticket they would get a branded bag like that from the airline. This interview was done by Norman on a trip to America. He carries it as an expression of the naivety and innocence of an Australian abroad. Yes, the interviews are just as much, if not more, about Norman than the talent. Paul and Linda McCartney worked him out and played along very graciously. Keith Moon not so much. You have to keep in mind, Garry McDonald was an actor, not a comedian. Norman Gunston once interviewed then ex Prime Minister John Gorton on his variety show. After offering him a pineapple doughnut and directing him to the Night and Day, he then asked some typical gormless Norman questions including whether he and his wife got their bond back when they vacated the Prime Ministerial residence! The bag you see Norman holding was one of the cheap vinyl promotional bags that airlines handed out to passengers in the 60's and 70's - mainly to children. If you took one to school then the other kids thought you were dead posh because they assumed that you'd been on a plane somewhere. Garry McDonald did all these interviews as Gunston without the guests being forewarned. He pioneered this comedy technique. Some of them like McCartney cottoned on pretty early, but others like Ali just wondered wtf had happened in the Australian media. I still think when he says he cut himself shaving, and Sally says “you should use an electric razor” and he replies “I do” - that’s very fast and gold. He suffered from depression a lot of his life and it’s amazing how many genuinely funny people do. You can see a completely different McDonald in Mother and Son, where he plays the straight man, the long suffering son to Ruth Cracknell’s brilliant eccentric, scheming mother. So he was versatile as well. That’s not really something to react to.

I've watched ones with McCartney , Kiss , Guns 'n' Roses , Elliot Gould , Cheech and Chong . In the Kiss interview , he asked if it would be alright for autographs to be given at the end , and then he went and gave all the members of Kiss HIS autograph , genius .

He was in a silly (but still fun) movie called The Pirate Movie which was very loosely based on The Pirates of Penzance. It starred Christopher Atkins and Kristy McNichol and Norman Gunston (Gary McDonald) played both the French inspector and police sergeant. You can still find his Salute to Abba on youtube.

Gary McDonald is a lovely man. Sticks to himself nowadays as he suffers from depression as a lot of comedians do.

He lives in the NSW south coast town of Berry (30 minutes down the road from me) with his Australian actress wife, Diane Craig. He's had some pretty serious mental health issues over the years. He's also a very good character and stage actor.

I’ve so many memories of Mum & Dad in hysterics watching Norman. I loved the interview he did with Paul McCartney, great memories and such a fun time in Aussie tv ✨

The Logies were awards based on the votes of readers of TV Week, the best selling weekly TV guide magazine in Australia. There were awards for many categories, but the big one was the Gold Logie, for the most popular television personality. Norman Gunston's desire to win it, which he eventually did, drew attention to the rather fatuous nature of these awards. ('Logie' does sound like 'lergy,' which in Australia, if nowhere else, means a disease.)

Sally Struthers played Babbett , The next door neighbour. As for his "Insinuation" Sally was in Playboy so thats the questioning. The Logies are AUSTRALIAS EMMYS , extremely serious awards.
