Probably the funniest interview ever, it never fails to cheer me up. Sally's genuine 'shock' quickly morphs into appreciation then adoration, as she realises she's being handled by a comic genius who's still making her laugh. Gary is a national treasure.

Hands down THE funniest interview I've watched in my 50+ yrs, re-enjoyed countless times since watching its original airing, it never fails to have me laughing out loud. Gary MacDonald's Norman Gunston is absolutely a national treasure and Sally Struthers is adorable in her genuine good-natured bewilderment at the situation she finds herself in.

This one is probably well remembered because of how much Struthers laughs and is a great sport about it. There were others who failed to get the humour and those who appeared to be annoyed (Chevy Chase). The Elliott Gould one is memorable for how much he stares at Gunston - you can tell he doesn't realize and is just baffled by this bizarre and seemingly clueless guy.

"Maybe you should try an electric razor." " I do." 😂😂😂 She and her infectious laugh, were an absolute delight! It was refreshing when celebrities actually got his humour and character. Often he would go right over people's head, especially a lot of the Americans who took it all too seriously at times. Great time capsule from the 70s and the genius that was Gary McDonald!

Struthers has been to acting school and knew what she was looking at immediately, playing along to perfection, perfectly willing to let Norm take the driver's seat, despite almost certainly never having experienced this type of interview before. Not surprisingly this worked far better than with guests who are not actors or who always need to be the centre of attention (e.g. Bee Gees). You can see how Garry obsessed over every small detail, the timing and delivery is impeccable. Perfection.

I was booked to tour the North West with Garry in 1978 and had dinner with him in Port Hedland. We talked about Norman, who was funny, brave and outrageous, and Garry spoke about the personal toll it took on him. Unfortunately, the next night in Karratha he was attempting to do his floorshow in front of teams celebrating netball and AFL grand final wins, and they were oblivious to him. It was the wrong crowd. Halfway through Delilah he stopped singing, shouted at the crowd and left the stage, never to return. By the time we finished the set, he was on his way back to Perth. A lovely man, unassuming, who could actually play blues harmonica unlike Norman's suck and blow. I was so happy he had further success with Mother and Son with the late Ruth Cracknell.

This is the kind of interview Australia used to do so well, and you could tell from the interviewees reaction what kind of person they were. It cut through to the authentic. I miss Australia, I went back a few times, but it wasn't there any more.

Yes, it's being strangled by globalism and political correctness. We have the most shameless politicians in the world and the ABC which made this in 70s in now a hard left socialist organisation.

Gary had a very quick mind, but he never wanted to make his guests uncomfortable, so he was never passive agressive in the way Sacha Cohen was. So his interviews never leave a bad taste in your mouth and are genuinely fun.

It's difficult to imagine how ANY reasonable interviewee could be offended by Norman Gunston. Keith Moon managed. 🤪🤪 EVERYTHING about Ali G is offensive. Norman Gunston is the butt of the humour of his own situation. Ali G (Sacha Cowen) sets out to deliberately make the other party look stupid. Very 'cheap' and puerile 'entertainment'.

Sally had no idea who "Norman Gunston" was when the interview was arranged. She just knew that he was an Aussie TV journo....not a comedian. So her responses were genuinely innocent and totally unrehearsed. That was the best thing about Norman doing interviews "O/S"....nobody knew that he was a TV comedian back home. :) I remember seeing this back in the day and yet even now, every time I see it, I genuinely laugh out loud and when Sally suggests that Norman should use an electric razor and he replies, "I do!".......that just destroys me every time!!! Hard to accept that Sally is 71 and Gary 70 this year (2019).

It's a difficult call, but I think this is his funniest interview. Sally is a wonderful character. "I think she's on drugs." Norman clutching his QANTAS 'flight bag' is so 1970s 'Aussie world traveller'. I'm so glad I found this today. It really lifted the mood. Sally's manner and laugh could brighten anyone's day.

Okay, after watching this about ten times in a row, my favorite part must come @ 2:58 when Sally (who is finally hip to what's really going on here) can't control her mirth anymore and she goes "Norman, I love you." Then reaches over to give him a kiss. So funny, so cute, so sweet. A big triple yay!
