One I loved back in the 80s was Star Frontiers Knight Hawks... yeah, it's just cardboard chits, but it was a fun one.

Glad to see Silent Death. An awesome game when you just want to blow stuff up. Was a little irritated when they recycled some on the minis to new ships. The brood were way overpowered until some of the house books, especially Sigurd, came out.

I actually 3D printed my own space battleships and cruisers. Then, we just used a simple set of rules meant for pre-dreadnought warships meant for historical wargaming, and it is called Portable Pre-Dreadnought. I used a space hex map from BattleTech space game called BattleSpace (not a good game). It works well to just use sea going warship game rules in space.

Triplanetary!!! Mail ordered the original version from GDW when we lived overseas (unboxed tube mailer). Still have it... Fantastic take on "spacefaring" with a super cool vector movement system and a map of the solar system out to Jupiter with gravity wells and all. A true sandbox game before the term was invented...

Star Fleet battles was a staple for me a few decades ago. These days I’m really interested in playing Federation Commander (the simpler modern version)

Great List Rob. For me Renegade Legion should be in the top 3. I loved this game and played a ton of it. Also loved the DOS PC version as well. I really wish that this one would go back into print.

I've got a ton of Star Wars Armada stuff I haven't played with for years (including 3 star destroyers) This has motivated me to pull it all out again.

I enjoyed the game, the only problem I had with it, was the setup was a bit tedious. The main reason I stopped playing it was that I got into SW Legion and that became my Star Wars mini game for a long time. This change happened right around the time I got the Coreillian campaign expansion, which I've never played.

So pleased to see Full Thrust getting some love. Its just a blast. I agree with pretty much everything you’ve said but you should check out Starmada Unity. About the same crunch as FT but the best ship building tools I’ve seen. I’m familiar with all the games you mentioned, but bizarrely not Talon!! I now have something exciting the check out!!! Thanks!

I've got D and D attack wing. Love that game. The attack wing system is really fun. I haven't played any space ship battle games. I'm more into fantasy than space stuff, but these sound cool. Thanks for sharing.

I agree with your list and (surprisingly enough) find all of them on my shelf. :-) Well, with the exception of Talon, I didn't know that one. In my list I also would have the "soft reboot" of Starfleet Battles, "Federation Commander". And it's true, Battletech's Battlespace doesn't need extra mention, it was quickly cobbled together and heavily influenced by Renegade Legion's Leviathan (same publisher, lazyness, and little time).

When you included Babylon 5 Wars, did that include the Babylon 5 fleet Action? That was also a great game and allowed dozens, and I mean dozens, of ships on the table.

Rob this list was definitely out of this world 😁I to spent a fortune and I mean a fortune on the first X-Wing, then out comes the 2nd edition and most of the things I bought were no good, unless you bought the 3 upgrade kits to use the older ships, but never covered all the ships I had, but to end in a good note , I too would have pick Talon as my number one, it's so immersive great little game, Triplanetary looks Interesting may have to invest in a copy of It.

Great top 10 as this theme is right up my street. Battlefleet Gothic was Mt true love, surprised it didn't feature higher in the list, but great comments for the game (I do wish they would reboot this and update it). I will gather to read up on the ones featured 4-1 as they must be good to beat it. Great watch sir and regards from over the pond

What! What about Starfire? Nothing but deep space battles with a rich historical background as to why the fight. It plays like a good naval game. To be honest, only Star Fleet Battles is the only game mentioned that I've heard of.
