It's a tough position, to be the "replacement" player in a band... and I can only imagine it's to the nth degree in a band as huge as Metallica. But Trujillo is just such an affable, likable guy, and such a talent. He's earned everything that's come his way.

In a way, he kind of stepped in at the best time that he could have into a band that was able to accept a new member. Metallica has been very broad in it's music writing since the Black Album that Rob never really had to replicate anyone else's writing style. If the band would have wanted a direct replication of any member, that would have been much more difficult.
@samsmith1999
@samsmith1999 Жыл бұрын
@@Danlovestrivium Musically, I agree with you. But, more than that, Lars and James had grown up a lot from when Jason joined the band. I believe they were able to appreciate Roberto's contributions in a way they could never appreciate Jason's. They always kept Jason at arm's length, and I think that's just immaturity. They've said as much in interviews. They felt like Jason was "lucky" to be part of Metallica. It seems, now, Metallica feels lucky to have Trujillo.
@billbored8277
@billbored8277 Жыл бұрын
I dont think it was tough at all for him. They treated him better than they ever did Jason. He walked into a great situation, where they had learned to respect and acknowledge their new member, instead of hazing and shitting on their new bandmate.

Rob is too good of a bass player to follow licks. I'm extremely happy for him, don't get me wrong. But I've seen him live when he played with Suicidal Tendencies and Infectious Grooves and his live game is ON POINT. A literal beast on that bass. In Metallica, you wouldn't really know it It's a bittersweet situation for his longtime fans. And I wish him the best. But man, what I wouldn't give to see that magic one last time.

Every single one of the bass players happened to land their gig in the best "Metallica" time frame for their qualities. Cliff, at the very beginning, bringing music knowledge and being (almost) the leader. Jason fit right in the "I'm fkn angry and I'll tear the venue down" era with his vocals and finally Rob as the guy that was needed to reignite the spark. Or at least that's my view on it

If you're talking about his time with Suicidal Tendencies and Infectious Grooves, you're absolutely right. They scored bigtime when they got this guy. Great bass player, great choice. Got me back into the band in a big way.

Robert is the bassist every songwriter dreams about: professional, artistic and a master of his instrument. 💀🔥✝️

Robert has a lot of haters but they forget he’s not just a hired hand he’s got his own style and creativity that adds something the band greatly needed.

Rob really was the perfect bassist for Metallica. Not saying he's the best bassist they've ever had, not saying he's the best bassist in the world, but at a time where Metallica were acting immature with each other, to have someone come in that appears to be calm and mature while also being able to play whatever is needed was exactly what they needed. I have no idea what Metallica would be today without Rob, they might not even be a band right now if they didn't find someone that was a calming voice of reason.

From the documentary, it looks to me that they needed an experienced bass player with zero ego. Rob was that. He seems like a nerdy hippie that fills the role and knows his place. It was provably a great fit socially for the band at the time. But to me, it also seemed like a quick fix getting a session player like Rob who would just do his part and not stand out. But musically, my guess is they would have liked him to not be so squared and in the pocket when creating music. It's like when Rolling Stones got a pocket player session bassist. They lost the nastiness and became a little bit boring.

That was actually a pretty accurate Ozzy impression.

True story, I did not know who this guy was when I saw him at the Peabody Hotel in Memphis the day of Ozzie’s Merry mayhem tour. I saw him at the bar with shorts and white tube socks. He then walked around and I saw him a few other times that day. So during the concert to say I was surprised to see him playing bass is an understatement!!!😂😂😂😂😂

Dude has played in so many awesome bands... Suicidal, Infectious Groove, Ozzy, and now Metallica. Couldn't happen to a better guy. And he's a monster bassist all around. Can play hard fast and loud, but can get down and funky too lol.

I'm extremely happy for Rob. On the other hand, I'm extremely sad I'll never get to see that true Trujilo style on stage again. Highly underrated and grossly under-used. Are you listening Metallica?! Probably not lol but one can hope.
