It's a tough position, to be the "replacement" player in a band... and I can only imagine it's to the nth degree in a band as huge as Metallica. But Trujillo is just such an affable, likable guy, and such a talent. He's earned everything that's come his way.

In a way, he kind of stepped in at the best time that he could have into a band that was able to accept a new member. Metallica has been very broad in it's music writing since the Black Album that Rob never really had to replicate anyone else's writing style. If the band would have wanted a direct replication of any member, that would have been much more difficult.
@samsmith1999 Жыл бұрын
@@Danlovestrivium Musically, I agree with you. But, more than that, Lars and James had grown up a lot from when Jason joined the band. I believe they were able to appreciate Roberto's contributions in a way they could never appreciate Jason's. They always kept Jason at arm's length, and I think that's just immaturity. They've said as much in interviews. They felt like Jason was "lucky" to be part of Metallica. It seems, now, Metallica feels lucky to have Trujillo.
@billbored8277 Жыл бұрын

Rob really was the perfect bassist for Metallica. Not saying he's the best bassist they've ever had, not saying he's the best bassist in the world, but at a time where Metallica were acting immature with each other, to have someone come in that appears to be calm and mature while also being able to play whatever is needed was exactly what they needed. I have no idea what Metallica would be today without Rob, they might not even be a band right now if they didn't find someone that was a calming voice of reason.
@haraldsletterod Жыл бұрын
From the documentary, it looks to me that they needed an experienced bass player with zero ego. Rob was that. He seems like a nerdy hippie that fills the role and knows his place. It was provably a great fit socially for the band at the time. But to me, it also seemed like a quick fix getting a session player like Rob who would just do his part and not stand out. But musically, my guess is they would have liked him to not be so squared and in the pocket when creating music. It's like when Rolling Stones got a pocket player session bassist. They lost the nastiness and became a little bit boring.
